"Question. What does everyone think Kiffin will do with Neyland's maxims? Will he keep them as part of game prep like Battle, Majors, Fulmer did? Or will he ignore them?"
Maybe he'll leave them on the wall in case anyone wants to read them. However, he would do well to leave the Neyland times to history and move forward. Just as Alabama had to finally get over the Bear Bryant era and quit trying to survive with his proteges, TN needs to look to the future. The downfall of Fulmer was due to his insistance on retaining the same old predictable offensive style he had been using since his days as offensive coordinator with Majors. Hopefully, we'll never again have to listen to anyone talking about "pounding the rock".
Personally I'm not convinced this is the best hire Hamilton could have made, but it's starting to look a lot better since his dad is coming with him. In reality, he'll probably function as a co-head coach and will bring an NFL perspective to TN football our players have never had before. Looks like 2009 should be an exciting season.

"Fulmer is a great man. I am sure Lane would not have bothered much less Hammy."
Fact is, you don't know what Lane would have done. Hammy is a different deal, but anything he might have done isn't mentioned in the article.

Nonsense - maybe if Cutcliff had stayed they MIGHT have been 8-4 or 7-5,judging from the difference he made when he came back, but even that is pure speculation. Clawson should not be made out to be the scapegoat in this year's failure. We knew we were weak at the QB spot because Fulmer refused to develop Crompton last year. In fact, the whole offense lacked the talent needed to compete with the top tier teams in the SEC. It's been years since we've had a really good offensive line. The decision to get rid of Fulmer was the right one, and that chapter of UT football is closed. Let's hope there are better days ahead.

I also think they could have done better, but on the other hand Bob Stoops went to OK from a coordinator position - look what he's done. If he can bring his dad and some good assistants (NOT Coach O), he might do great things. The difference between Kiffen and Stoops or Richt is that they were experienced and proven coordinators. This guy was only a co-offensive coordinator at S.Cal. However, it's not like he coming into a situation where there's no talent on the team to deal with. Personally, I think it was a bad decision on his part to take the job with Oakland. Al Davis is a nut case, and he was getting into a no-win situation. Hopefully, things will be different here.

Here we go again - trying to get by cheap, just like we did with Bill Battle. This guy has no head coaching experience in college and was a dismal failure in the pros. He was co-offensive coordinator at SC - big deal! I hope he works out, but at first glance it looks like we just traded one mediocre for another.

Clawson made a mistake leaving Richmond - he didn't recognize Fulmer's lackadasical, predictable style and the complete lack of coaching for the offensive line. He'll probably land on his feet somewhere, but it won't be in the SEC.

Regarding Kiffen - if that's the best Hamilton can do, look for both him and Kiffen to be in the unemployment line by Dec 2010. I doubt the fans and boosters will have much patience with a 2nd rate hire, considering the sorry shape of the program right now.

Lots of Kelly talk out there, but Hamilton needs to aim higher than someone like him from a 2nd tier conference. TN needs somebody with experience from a major conference and innovative offensive schemes - Leach is that guy. Give him a good defensive coordinator and the talent that would come to TN, and watch him compete for conference championships instead of division titles which count for nothing. For the people who say he wouldn't fit in East TN because he's a little squirrely - you obviously don't remember Ray Mears.

I'll bet there were a lot of people that said Urban Meyer couldn't cut it in the SEC either since he was a WAC guy, the defenses out there couldn't compare to the SEC, etc. We see how that turned out! Leach has never had a losing season at Texas Tech, even with the leftover recruits that TX, TX A&M and OK didn't want. Bring him and his pirate collection to UT and let him have at it. Brian Kelly would turn out to be the next Ron Zook.
On Dallas blog: Speculation already out there on Leach successor

If he's bringing his dad, why would he want to bring Orgeron? This guy proved to be a jerk at Ole Miss, and doesn't seem to be a fit with the rest of the group he's talking about. What about finding a position for Sylvester Croom, to possibly step into Monte's spot in a year or two? He might be available for a coordinator's job at a major football school rather than take a head coaching situation at Div 2.
