Greetings from Gator Country!! The Florida papers are reporting that Stan Drayton was asked not to return. They're quoting sources from within the Florida Athletic Department. Have you heard anything about that? I like the Clawson hire since it tells me Tennessee is staying with a pro-style offense. Tell your caller Mark my hometown is Johnson City. Go Vols!!

Great hire by Coach Fulmer. Hooker, you should be ashamed of yourself for riding the fence on this one.

With one coaching spot left on offense is there still any talk or possibility of hiring GEORGE QUARLES from Maryville? I still think that would be a good move. Seems to me Quarles is made from the same mold as Clawson, he just doesn't have the "College Cred" He also could do the special teams alot of good.
Thanks

I'm pleased that Fulmer has gone outside of the UT family and has hired a coach that is hungry. If Fulmer is willing to give Clawson control he could be a great hire.

Hey Hook. Thess new hires really give tennessee an advantage early next year. With all the changes, won't it make it difficult for Tennessee opponents to scout Tennessee's offense? Here's to Tennessee rolling The Florida Tebow's next year!

I strongly believe that Clawson can do some GREAT things here in BIG ORANGE COUNTRY. He turned the biggest 2 year turn around in Richmonds 124 year history from going 3-8 in 04 to 9-4 in 05. Think about what he can do with our tallent. Thumbs Up!!! Great Hire in my opinion.

If Quarles comes to UT, he could be given responsibilities for the special teams in addition to the receivers coaching duties. Spec Teams is an area that needs continuity and leadership--even though they played well in spurts at the end of this season.

Hook, MVPS would have to be...
1. JaJaun Smith for keeping the up tempo (I'm a graduate of McMinn County High also)
2. Tyler Smith
3. Wayne Chism cause without this big guy where would we be? Oh yeah, our big guy can shoot 3's now... how do you defend that???
Posted by chemist on January 18, 2008 at 10:54 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Daaavis,
Nice Seinfeld reference, but I think he's got "Jimmy-legs." Guard play is the most important for the tournament. Greg Oden didn't win a championship on his own.
Posted by jshmrt20 on January 18, 2008 at 10:55 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Tyler Smith is the most important player....he provides an inside out presence and great basketball "smarts." No disrespect to Dane Bradshaw, but T Smith is a player who fills up the stat sheet in important catagories but can also score with anyone in the country. Lofton is number 2. Lofton still provides a deep threat. Sometimes the threat is as important as the outcome. It causes defenses to adjust. Jordan Howell is number 3. He plays the role of a non-scoring point guard to perfection and can also knock down the open shot when he needs to.
Posted by skip22 on January 18, 2008 at 10:56 a.m. (Suggest removal)
1) T. Smith
2) Prince
3) Lofton
Tyler has played out of his mind. J.P has provided a brilliant spark off the bench. Lofton is Lofton, and can go off at anytime.
Posted by JeffBleedsOrange on January 18, 2008 at 11 a.m. (Suggest removal)
3. T. Smith
2. J. Smith
1. S. Pearl (when he's NOT in the game, he's helping the team the more than if he were in the game.)
Posted by volunteerTY23 on January 18, 2008 at 11:07 a.m. (Suggest removal)
top 3 MVP's 1. Tyler Smith, he's our go to guy, best passer/creator/ can score from anywhere on the floor, could improve on D. 2. jajuan smith / high energy on D, a little to streaky but is almost like the teams motor, jajauan goes we go. 3. chris lofton, not the scoring avg. of last season but is undoubtedly the team captian/ leader, when chris is on the floor the offense is ran more smooth. jordan is also a huge key to our success, he deserves alot of love as well as wayne

Coach Pearl has not only changed our men's BB program, but he has also changed the fan's thinking. We are now focused on what we need to do for the NCAA tournament, not just the next game. Pearl sets up the schedule to play teams that will help our seeding. He has a reason for everything he does.
Comment on his son playing. Remember Al McGuire played his son (who wasn't very good, I believe he started), he said " he's my son and I love him"
Posted by jshmrt20 on January 18, 2008 at 11:18 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Does anyone think that the subbing patterns Coach Pearl implemented early on hindered Lofton's rhthym? I think that made it a bit difficult for Lofton to settle in to his new role. Coach Pearl did what was best for a championship caliber team in providing a lot of depth. But I do believe it set Lofton back a few games this year. That being said, last night was a step closer for Lofton and if he plays any where near his potential, Tennessee can win a national championship.

jshmrt20: I thought exactly the same thing. Especially when Chris got a bit on a mini roll. I was thinking.....alright, he's going off now. Let him stay in and keep it up. Out he came. I understand that part of our strength is our rotation of keeping people fresh. But it seems to me it might have been worth it to keep him in a bit longer to let him get along even further with his offensive progress.

Posted by warriorman86 on January 21, 2008 at 10:52 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Matta had no right pushing JaJuan,it wasn't a timeout and JaJuan was still on the court. And after the game, Matta didn't even shake our player's hands. After he shook the coaches hands he went right by the players to yell at the refs as they were leaving the court. But as far as touching our players, he deserves a fine for that.

Once again we see how Tennessee is not an elite basketball program.
I'm not talking about the team. The team will be fine. The team we saw run out of gas last night and lose to a lesser team is the same one that has ground out wins against Gonzaga, Xavier, Ole Miss, and tOSU, and smoked Vandy.
I'm talking about the fans. UCLA and UNC lost last week too, and aside from a couple of Tar Heel bimbos, no one is crying as much as UT fans this morning. Apparently, we haven't been around big time basketball long enough to learn even the great ones lose a few...

I've got to say Sly is the worst coach in the SEC; even though, he does manage to pull out a couple of ranked wins each year. Now the Dumbest coach would have to be our boy Les Miles! "AR KANSAS"

WORST COACH IN THE SEC: I think its Les Miles. I Miles was the Coach at Kentucky would they have been better? He makes the most boneheaded calls of any coach in the SEC. Rich Brooks would have led LSU to a National Championship and probably only lost 1 game.
Posted by HuskerT on January 24, 2008 at 11:31 a.m. (Suggest removal)
You were talking about coaches commenting on how players performed and you pointed out that Bruce Pearl and Pat Summit will talk about that while Fulmer won't. I just wanted to point out that there is a big difference between football and basketball. If, as a football coach, you comment on one person's play, you're pointing out one person out of 11 instead of one out of 5. Because you're roster is much smaller it's also easier to make sure you have a relationship with every player. You're going to be able to have a close relationship with every player as a basketball coach. Head football coaches have to rely on position coaches to have those relationships, so they can't afford to call guys out. Not to mention that the culture of the sport is entirely different. Basketball players are typically looking for the spotlight. It is much more common to find football players who are all about team. I don't want my football coach calling out players. I think it's horrible form.

Anyone who thinks that Fulmer is a bad coach is ridiculous. Fulmer is one of the best coaches in the COUNTRY. No coach with 10+ years of coaching has a better winning percentage. And all of those wins came at an SEC school. You don't want to take that for granted. Nebraska did that with Osborne and later Solich and look where that got us. Who do these people think are going to come in and win 9 or 10 games every year?

Hey guys:
Great show today!
I agree with the Griff and say that the intro music for the basketball team needs to change because it's pretty lame. I liked it better last year when "We Fly High (Ballin')" was the intro music.
I wouldn't mind Kanye's Good Life as the intro, "have you ever popped champagne on a plane..."
Good job speaking loudly today Griff, and keep rockin' those Ray-Bans.

I like the Zombie Nation Song to be played after a T.O. But they do need to go back to the Kanye song for the introduction. They also had rap music for last years intros.

Griff has a point. The only the new music has going for it is Bert dropping his catch phrases.
As much as I disliked the "Good Life" at the start of the year, it kind of grew on me. It started to fit the team. As soon as it starts to work, they pull it.
And while we're at it, bring back the camera following the team out of the locker room while that Jay Z "Bring 'em Out" song is playing...

The worst COACH in the SEC is Larry Slade. I know you were talking about head coaches, but the Sladester has to go. Also, the new intro music sounds as if it were at some huge "futbol" match and the whole crowd is chanting. Soccer hooligans have no place in Thompson Boling

I think the comments made by the ESPN writer about Eric Ange were pretty accurate. Although Ange played fairly well in orange, I just don't think he showed the goods to make the move to the next level. At best I think he will be the next Tee Martin, and go late in the draft, hang around for a few years and then disappear and become just another statistic.

Yes, I do because Ainge was a bit of a "head case" after the injury in the Notre Dame game. Coach "Cutt" did a good job but he was defiitely not the same QB. I look forward to a QB that can scramble at least a little when the pocket breaks down & I beleive we will have that in Coleman or Crompton. Go Vols!

I think I have figured out how the basketball team can shoot better free throws: just let them take the free throw from the 3 pt line.
Posted by jemcrynlds on January 28, 2008 at 10:36 a.m. (Suggest removal)
For Mike Strange:
Concerning free throws, there's no question we have players who need to shoot a higher percentage. However, our free throw percentage for individual games this season is related to the tempo (pace or speed) of the game.
For the four highest pace games we've played this season, our free throw percentage overall has been 53%. For the four slowest pace games we've played this season, our free throw percentage overall has been 75%. I statistically analyzed our free throw percentages as related to game pace for our entire season, and the statistically significant conclusion is that as the speed of our games increases, our free throw percentage falls. As game speed slows, our percentage goes up.
Credit for this idea goes to your cohort, Mike Griffith, who suggested that we just get tired due to our style of play, and this affects our free throw shooting. I just analyzed the numbers.

They only way the students will stop their inapproiate chants at games is if it becomes an embarressment to the Univ. They have been doing this for years and the media has not reallly given them much attention as far as how inapproiate it is. I think Pat is trying to bring attention to this so, just maybe, the Duke Admin will take action. I don't think Pat would allow Tenn fans to treat opposing players like that in TBA.

I mean, duke was leading 33-33 at the half according to the announcer. And while Tennessee stretched their lead to 8 in the second half the announcers were off talking about Duke instead of highlighting what was the largest lead of the night for the Lady Vols. They kept bringing up what Duke was doing to Tennessee on defense, and seemed almost upset when Tennessee was up by 10.

Two things: 1)When you add Chris Lofton and JuJuan Smith to Ramar Smith and Jordan Howell, that may be the best GUARD FOUR-SOME in the SEC, if not the NATION. 2) If Jordan did not get hurt last year, would he have developed into the full-time starting point guard this year? I have been raised to be respectful and say "yes sir", "no sir" and follow directions when dealing with police. I was pulled over a few months ago and cited for following too closely and the officer did everything he could to intimidate me, including making me get out and put my hands on the hood of his car. I did exactly as he asked and never objected or raised my voice. I was pulled over quite a bit in high school and college and have never had that happen before. I'm 35 and white and driving a 2006 Lancer Evolution. In high school I drove a souped up Cutlass Calais with air shocks on the back and never, ever got that treatment.

I lived in Memphis for a couple years and worked down on Airways Drive for a while. I'm also white. I was driving a Ford Escort and on my way home from work when I got pulled over. I asked the officer why he stopped me since I knew that I hadn't done anything wrong. He said he saw me pull out from behind a building (the one I worked at). Basically, I was pulled over because the only reason a white guy would be in that neighborhood would be to get drugs.

Its not just the men either. There are plenty of women's fans that want nothing to do with the men's ath. dept.

Coaches can't win. If they suspend players for games, they get chastised because it's either players who won't play anyway, which is actually the majority of the roster, or players are suspended for the first game against some scrub. Most teams start the season with an "easy" game for a number of reasons - primarily to help a "new" team get some confidence. When there are offenses in the off-season, what game do you want them to suspend players for? Mid-season conference games? And when they get mid-season game suspensions, coaches get criticized for letting them come back in time for a bowl game. It's ridiculous. I really believe that most coaches are doing their best to help these young men succeed in life as much as in football.

I feel like we could never ever find someone that has the loyalty as Phil Fulmer has. He said he didn't sign on national singing day because he wants to "explore each of his three choices more." Sounds like he is just seeking more attention to me. Shortly after his " I hate attention" comment, the interviewer ask him what he liked most about the recruiting process and he responded "I like all the attention and everyone knowing who I am."
I think this kid is going to be the next #1 ranked nobody in college football. I truly hope he picks "The Ohio State University" and I also hope they make it back to the National Championship this coming year and he is blessed with the distinct honor of being defeated by yet another SEC power house.
Go DAWGS! And Best of Luck to Bruce and the Gang.

I disagree on saying the students have time and homework is not an excuse. I went to the game, but my wife started working on her homework when she got home from school and was still doing it when I got home from the game. As well I had a friend who had 2 test and a report due the next day. I think if it was a weekend game, the students would have sold out.

Look, you have a large number of dedicated students who will get to the arena as early as possible to get their seats down low. That's great, I hope they fill up that section every night.
You also have a sizeable number that isn't interested in taking the upper 300 level seats that require an oxygen tank and a Sherpa. Its not a big deal, no one should be offended.
As a recent UT grad, I gladly purchased some of those upper level seats this year, and I would gladly purchase some next year if they cut the allotment and opened them to the public.

Mike G., can you speak up (or not turn away from the microphone)! I am listening on internet from out of town and your voice often fades away as you speak. Would help me keep from guessing the end of your statements (cannot turn the volumn up on computer as easily as I do my car radio). Thanks.--Couchdummy

Wow, I don't follow the Lady Vols much, but man those were some clutch free throws by a 64% free throw shooter. J.P. Prince, take notes.........

Mike, you are the Teddy Roosevelt of sports talk radio. You speak softly, but you carry a big stick. Way to stay your ground on your opinions!

Looking forward to tonight's Arkansas-Tennessee hoops game. I'm a big fan (aren't we all?) of JuJuan Smith. Do you think he has a shot at making it in the pros?

Hey Daaaave! If I wanted to watch NASCAR, I'd flush a bag of Skittles down the toilet and bet on which color would win. It would be a more exciting race and with less predictability than the real thing.
