Tennessee found the solution to its point guard issue when junior college All-American Bobby Maze signed a basketball letter of intent Wednesday to play for the Vols next season.
“Stevie Wonder could see this is where I needed to be,” said Maze, who transferred from Oklahoma to Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College last year. “They’ve called me ‘The Solution’ here, so you do the equation: What better place could I be?” Full story »

Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College coach Ryan Swanson said Bobby Maze would be a great fit for Tennessee. As a Bruce Pearl protégé, Swanson would know better than anyone. Swanson spent two years as an assistant on Pearl’s staff at Wisconsin-Milwaukee (2001-03). Maze, a 6-foot-3 point guard, was in Knoxville on Tuesday visiting the UT campus. Maze visited Cincinnati on Saturday and is scheduled to visit Kentucky this weekend. Full story »

A feel-good day for Tennessee men’s basketball program was suddenly interrupted Friday when coach Bruce Pearl announced that sophomore forward Duke Crews and sophomore point guard Ramar Smith will not be returning for the 2008-09 season.

Jordan Howell remembers returning to the hotel room he shared with Chris Lofton during the 2007 Sweet 16 in San Antonio.
“It was the night we lost to Ohio State, and when I walked in, Chris was crying,” said Howell, a fellow senior with Lofton on the Tennessee men’s basketball team last season. “As soon as I walked in, he wiped his eyes real quick and acted like nothing was wrong. “I thought he was crying because we lost.”

University of Tennessee men’s basketball star Chris Lofton didn’t want to make any excuses for his slump the first half of this past season.
But cancer isn’t an excuse — it’s a reason.
