SEVIERVILLE - Matt Raleigh is the only former Carolina Mudcat to coach and manage the Southern League team.
While Raleigh wouldn't turn down a chance to join manager Fredi Gonzalez's Florida Marlins staff, working his way to the major leagues isn't his ultimate goal.
"To be honest with you, I do it because I love the game," the 37-year-old said Tuesday before the Tennessee Smokies (20-32) rallied to beat the Mudcats 8-7 at Smokies Park and extend their winning streak to four games. "Wherever it takes me, it'll take me.
"Obviously, the more different positions that I have and the more experience I have, the more doors it may open. Everyone who does this wants to get to the major-league level, otherwise they probably wouldn't do it. (But) that's not my do or die. I love coaching and I love the game of baseball. Who knows? I might go into college baseball."
Like older brother Todd Raleigh, who just completed his first season at the University of Tennessee.
The younger Raleigh, who played at Western Carolina University where he holds the all-time record for home runs, RBIs and hits, has established deep roots in pro ball.
The Catamounts' Hall of Famer spent 10 years as a minor leaguer with six organizations after being drafted in the 14th round by the Montreal Expos. He has worked six years in the Florida Marlins' organization since retiring as a player.
The Swanton, Vt., native was Carolina's hitting coach in 2003. After a two-year absence, Florida re-hired him last December and gave him his first managerial job.
"I've got five little ones - boys (Matthew, 6; Brady 4; Cade, 1) and two girls (Alexis, 10, and Meaghan, 9), so I told the Marlins I wanted to take a couple of years off to stay at home with the kids," he said explaining his sabbatical. "My wife is a busy woman."
Home the past 12 years is Endwell, N.Y., where he met his wife, Michelle, and operates the Raleigh Baseball Institute, an instructional facility.
"It's been good enough to me to where I can do that full-time and make a good living doing it," he said.
The Raleigh brothers are tight. Todd was among the 1,785 in attendance.
They're also competitive. Todd beat Matt in a round of golf at Beaver Brook on Tuesday. The rematch is today at Tennessee National in Loudon.
"I wasn't happy," Matt Raleigh smiled and said. "He got me on the last couple of holes. I had to buy lunch."
Matt Raleigh proudly wears UT paraphernalia and has assisted his brother in recruiting. Charley Thurber, a power hitting outfielder from Elmira (N.Y.) Free Academy will become a Vol freshman this fall thanks to younger brother.
"I knew he needed some help," Matt Raleigh said. "He is a kid I've worked with. He turned down Mississippi State and Florida to go to Tennessee."
Players like Thurber will benefit UT. The Vols had a losing season (27-29) in Todd Raleigh's first year, finished 12-18 in the SEC and failed to advance to the conference tournament.
The Raleigh's have similar styles. They are hard-nosed, no-nonsense guys with passion for the game.
"We gave that game away (Monday) night," Matt said, referring to the Smokies' 6-5 come-from-behind win in 10 innings.
They don't like losing, either.
"I know my brother is not easy to play for," Matt Raleigh said. "Losing is not something he has ever been a part of. It may take him a year or two but he'll turn it around."
Smokies Win: Starter Chris Volstad held Tennessee to a run on five hits over seven innings and Carolina built a 7-1 cushion but the Mudcats' bullpen imploded.
Kyle Reynolds crushed Carlos Martinez's first pitch for a grand slam to cap the Smokies' six-run eighth and Steve Clevenger won it with a bases-loaded single in the ninth off Martinez (1-1).
Matt Craig and Clevenger had two hits each for the Tennessee. Mark Holliman, Darin Downs and Greg Reinhard (1-1) combined for six innings of four-hit relief of Tanner Watson.

Whose this Nick Gates guy? I never heard of him and sure don't want to read another one of his articles if he can't find something better to write about. I'll read a story about Raleigh when he does like our previous coach and takes us to 3 world series. He'll never take us to one.The athletic department has permanately destroyed our world series baseball program. What's pathetic is that it was all over Delmonico not kissing tail. It's more important at this university to kiss tail than to win.

Go Vols...The Raleigh story was a interesting look into their family. Appears they are baseball worthy. Hope things will go our way next season.

Our World Series program? You mean the one dead last in attendance, the one that had a terrible relationships with in state high school coaches, finished below .500 in the SEC 8 out of 10 the last 10 years and failed to make the SEC tourney 7 out of the last 10 years as well as the NCAAs??
We've won like 2 SEC tournament games in the last 10 years.
Sure, the CWS trips were great and I'm thankful for them but they were by far the exception and not the rule, especially the last 10 years.
Oh and I'm still waiting on guys from the baseball to transfer since Raleigh is so bad.

You ask some of the former Vol players how they liked Delmonico? Over half of his former players will tell you they couldn't stand him, like over half of the hs baseball coaches in this state. Delmonico didn't stand up for his guys and was extremely harsh on some of his players. If you weren't on his good side or he didn't like you could forget about playing time. Delmonico spent half the year down in Miami with his girlfriend. Larry Simcox would for the most part run the summer camps at UT. Delmonico was an a**hole and he wasn't doing his job he deserved to be fired. Too inconsistent and wasn't well recieved in this state. Hence all the Miami players currently on the UT roster. With Delmonico we were getting the University of Miami and FSU's reject players out of Miami and other parts of Florida. The good guys that he did get out of Miami is supposedly because Delmonico and a scout had some tight relationship. Where Rod would coax the kid to UT with the promise of a first round selection due to the scout. Heard this was the case with Arencebia and Bourbon. We have a coach now with good North Eastern ties and a harder worker in Todd Raleigh. If you didn't know these things about Delmonico now you do. You got some good inside info. Now do you see why Delmonico is Gone???

I agree with you D1AStarters. I have spent some time with former 3rd/1st baseman Matt Sternberg and he has spoken of the same things that you mentioned. And he, too, was from Miami. Delmonico had a couple of good seasons, but it was not from anything he did. Raleigh is going to make this team a successful one. The only thing that'll run him off the dumb fans we have that demand instant change.

World Series???? rabidvolfan mental outlook fits his name. Anybody that really kept up with UT baseball knew what a joke Delmonico was and still is!

Anyone heard how the golf match went today between the two brothers ?

You don't have to kiss tail to keep the job, but you sure can't be a horse's arse and keep it either. Delmonico put a few good teams out there, but he was an arse from the day he walked on campus. Good riddance to the man and may we never see his ilk on Rocky Top again. Todd Raleigh has a lot to prove and wasn't left a lot to build with. I hope he is able to do it quickly, because the "faithful" will hang him due to his lack of Tennesse pedigree if he falters for too long.
