UT men win SEC All-Sports Trophy

A regular-season title in basketball and strong showings in football and tennis boosted Tennessee’s men to the SEC All-Sports Trophy, UT announced Tuesday.

Bruce Pearl’s basketball team claimed UT’s first regular-season title since the Vols shared the 2000 title. Football won the Eastern Division and tennis tied for second place.

The Vols earned 64.5 points, one ahead of Florida.

Florida won the women’s title, with Tennessee finishing fourth.

The trophy awards points based on order of finish within conference competitions. Regular season is used for baseball, basketball and tennis. The SEC Championship game decides football.

Championship meets or tournaments decide cross country, golf, swimming and diving, and track and field.

Can't wait to hear the Florida chumps respond to this one. We finished ahead of them in B-ball, and we finished ahead of them in football. I know they beat us in football but who finished ahead of who by the end of the year? Just like when Bruce Pearl pearl spanks Billy D., they always respond with "who won the title crap". 2 can play at that. They will try to brag on their women's teams now, but Pat Head dominates the most important one!! CONGRATS!!

Not much of a surprise here. Men's basketball carrying the torch with 2 SEC titles this decade compared to 0 for the football team.

WorkinLikeHeck, men's basketball only has one title this decade. For the record, football has finished first in the East 4 times this decade compared to 2 times for basketball.

Posted by robvols on May 20, 2008 at 3:28 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Being a UT alum, I am happy to see this accomplishment. But, at what cost, as UT also failed to make the grade in the classroom in numerous areas (at least according to recent reports). While the sports limelight often lasts only a short time (and I love UT sports as much as the next person), these kids need to realize they are getting a chance at a college education and need to take more advantage of that.

Posted by WorkinLikeHeck on May 20, 2008 at 3:40 p.m. (Suggest removal)

wrong tennvol. Men's basketball has 2 titles this decade, compared to none for the football team. You may want to alert the UTAD of your claim:

http://www.utsports.com/basketball/pa...

Don't even try to give me it was the 1999-00 season. The Lady Vols are the 2008 national champs in basketball even though the season spanned 07-08. Same with the basketball team who is recognized as the 2008 SEC men's basketball champions and the 2000 SEC men's basketball champions. The season ended in 2000 (hence this decade) therefore we've won 2 SEC titles this decade in basketball and none in football. The banners hanging from the rafters also agree with me.

I'll take 2 SEC titles over finishing first in the East 4 times with no titles. Also, for the record, the basketball team turned this trick 3 times, not 2.

Excellent point robvols. #1 in the SEC All-sports, tied for last on the academic field -- in the nation. Sad...

Posted by spam247buster on May 20, 2008 at 3:58 p.m. (Suggest removal)

GerryOP-- where do you get that about being "tied for last on the academic field"?
While UT is no Ivy League school, its football team scored over 925 in the APR ratings, good enough to avoid losing scholarships. Many other schools didn't fare so well.
I realize that the basketball team did poorly in the APR ratings, and the baseball team as well (but EVERYBODY'S baseball team seems to do poorly there), but I haven't heard about an all-sports APR ranking of any sort. Got a link?

It would be cool if I could just read this story and be happy for our success, but that is completely out of the realm of possibility because I'm a huge d0uche b@g. Wait, I know! I'll just change the subject and make this about Fulmer. It doesn't realy matter that it is irrelevant because it still allows me to whine like a little b!tch girl.

On another note, it is hard to see how the girls came in 4th in the SEC when they won the NC in basketball and came in 2nd in the softball CWS. They must be really bad a track or something. Anyways, congrats to the guys.

Jerry Green was a pretty good coach-- he transformed perennial losers into 20+ win teams that went to the NCAA tourney every year he was here.
He really didn't like a large number of the UT fans, though. I have no idea why that might be.

losing 8 out of 9 games to finish the season effected momentum a little

Losing to Illinois St. and SWMO st. by 30 in the first round wasn't the most exciting way to finish seasons.

He also had more talent than any Tennessee basketball team in history (Yarbro - All-American, Haislip - Lottery Pick, Tony Harris, Isiah Victor -4 or 5 star, ect...)

Work, you are correct. I went back and looked at my posts. I appreciate a poster that takes the time to research the person they respond to. In many circles it is better to be known by who your enemies are rather than who are your friends. Just trying to establish my side of the fence with your posts. And to end I would never try to give real insight as I will leave that up to one such as yourself, TDTN, & Silent_Fulmer as it seems you folks are the only true fans and really seem to know it all. I look forward to your wonderful, skillful and respectful praise of all things Orange. I know that Fidel & Raul would love to have you on their team. Looking forward to your posts in the future and hopefully I can comment on them in a wonderful way like you do on those that disagree with your other world insight.

"Work, you are correct."

This is common thing around here. I've never believed in the "true fan" argument though.

So now you are going to compare me to Fidel and Raul? I guess Batista should have kept Castro closer as to keep an eye on him. I am all for Cuba Libre though.

Posted by spam247buster on May 20, 2008 at 4:41 p.m. (Suggest removal)

SilentFulmer-- Green still turned losers into winners, and those players that you rave about were his recruits (except Tony Harris-- worst leftover from the O'Neal years-- Green should have given that thug princess the boot, IMO).
Losing to Illinois State and SWMO St in the NCAA tournament was better than anything UT accomplished during the years of Green's predecessor or his successor.
Granted, I'm MUCH happier with Bruce Pearl than I ever was with Green, but Green deserves some credit-- he DID win an SEC title (though not outright) he DID win 20+ games every season, it was HIS record for most games won/season that just fell this season, and he DID take the Vols to the NCAA tournament every year he was here (while his predecessor and successor NEVER took the Vols to the Big Dance).

So because I don't agree with all things orange all the time and voice my opposition and conflciting points of view, I would work well with Fidel and Raul? Nopee. I guess when people don't believe the same views as I have I would just lock them up as orange koolaid prisoners? Most of the time people can't really argue with me all that much on my facts and usually resort to tactics such as namecalling.

If the orange koolaid people had it their way they would try to silence me because they don't agree with me. Comparing the Orange Koolaid drinkers that can't handle reality with Fidel and Raul would have been a much better comparison.

WorkinLikeHeck - I don't have any issues with you sounding your thoughts about the football team or any other sport, the only things that really gets me is the fact you will bash the football team at any given chance, plus make time to bash them when it isn't even an article talking about them!

On top of that, you JUST bash them, maybe I have missed the rare posts, but I have never seen you say 'wow, Tennessee won the east, one of the hardest divisions of all of college football, good job guys!' or anything remotely close to that, I have a very strong feeling that you would find a way to attempt bashing the football team even if we won our second national title in 10 years. Just exactly what would it take for you to actually pull for the football team? And please don't say 'fire fulmer' or 'foolmore' or whatever variation of that, it is getting so old hearing people say that no matter how many games we win or if we win our division, etc.....

JerkinLikeHeck & mcrimjob staying the course and frittering away our time.

dvols is correct ... their stuff never changes.

Both the basketball coach and football coach did good jobs this past year. But let's face it ... the roundballers played the first half of the season like Tarzan and finished like Jane. Pitino proved that UT skated through a season that was loaded with wins from an SEC schedule that included ... well, not much. This UT team would have been an afterthought in any of the past couple of SEC seasons. Seems Pearl's teams are ALWAYS an afterthought in the SEC tournament, always losing to lower seeds.

Yeah, Pearl whipped the second best basketball team in the land. But not nearly as badly as Fulmer whipped the second best football team in the nation. At least the football coach kept his players up enough to finish the season on a good note.

Keep it in perspective, losers. And have another fritter.

OK, I have never been a big BasketVols follower, but something is amiss here.

That link showing the 99-00 team says "SEC Eastern Division and overall champs" The overall record is 26-7 and the SEC record is 12-4. Now, if I am correct, there are two titles that you can win in the SEC....Regular season championship and tourney championship. The regular season championship is just like football, correct? And it is based on the SEC wins. Looks like the 99-00 team only got the SEC East "title" for the regular season with 12-4. No mention is made of a tourney championship, though the years that such championship was won by the Vols it is listed (78-79 for exmple)...So what is this "overall champs" tag? Is this one of those mythical championships for which there is no trophey? Are we claiming a championship based on having the best overall record? If that's the case, Fulmer has been robbed of several SEC "overall champs" titles through the years and needs to claim his just desserts!

In fact, I just Googled Jerry Green to find his coaching record:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerry_Gr...(basketball)

Nowhere on that Wiki is an SEC title listed, regular season or tourney. Sounds like this "overall champion" moniker is just a UT AD tag to make the team "sound" like champions...not to take anything away from them.

And it also seems, by my estimation, that WORKIN is a FOOL who doesn't even understand what an SEC title is, and can't cast his dispersions evenly.

Ah, a little research pays off.

LSU was the Regular season SEC champs for the 99-00 season...and my further reasearch shows that Arkansas won the tourney.

Tennessee doesn't have a trophy nor a banner for that season. Sorry Workin, your "facts" just got flushed.

This is how we see it in GATORVILLE
UF takes All-Sports Trophy again

Backed by a first-place finish from Florida's women's athletic teams, the Gators have won the 2007-08 SEC All-Sports Trophy with 159.50 points. It is the second straight year and 16th time in 17 years the Gators captured the trophy, which is presented by the New York Times Regional Newspaper Group.
Georgia, which broke Florida's streak of 14-straight SEC All-Sports titles in 2005-06, finished second overall with 140 points while Tennessee was third at 128.50. LSU (136.50) and Auburn (106.50) rounded out the top five.
The Gator men didn't fair too poorly themselves. Florida finished second in the men's standings with 63.50 points, one point behind first-place Tennessee.
"Give Tennessee credit," Foley said. "But our men had a great year too, finishing second."

volfaninlsuland, you are truly dumber than I thought. The SEC overall champion is the regular season champion. The tournament champion in basketball is merely the tournament champion. When referring to the SEC champion in basketball, you refer to the regular season champion. Also in 1999-2000 (the 2000 basketball season), there was a 4 way tie for first and all 4 teams are recognized as SEC champions. Call the SEC office and ask them or perhaps the UTAD and get the banner removed from TBA and trophy removed from the trophy case. Men's basketball 2 SEC titles and football has 0 SEC titles. You sir are truly a moron.

Just waiting on TDTN to show up to deliver with Dupree reading the map. TJ has a new shirt. Tngeoff is getting the world in shape.

Workin, do you have a response?

Posted by vol_in_lsu_land on May 21, 2008 at 9:47 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I have a link for you too there Workin'...may be a little more official because it came from the SEC website.

http://secsports.com/doc_lib/bkc_thro...

Now, look carefully. The SEC had a 4-way tie with 4 teams going 12-4.

This included a 3-way tie in the East. Now, I can imagine that the SEC took the lazy way out and awarded a 4-way split for the championship. However, Tennessee didn't win an "outright" title no matter how you slice it, at best its a 4-way split. Furthermore, Tennessee's overall win percentage is the lowest of the 4 at .700. LSU's .824 leads the pack. I do not know how this all broke down with head-to-head matchups, but I'd be willing to wager that Tennessee didn't come out on top.

Now you get on this website daily and blast Phil Fulmer for no SEC titles since 98. The difference between hoops and football is that we have a championship game in FB that decides it on the field. The days of co-championships died in 1992. If the conference still played like the Big-10, Tennessee might have 4 or 5 SEC co-championships in the Fulmer era.

The facts speak for themselves. LSU was the lone champion of the West in 00 and had the highest overall winning percentage. Tennessee had the lowest of the four. If you want to claim that as a championship, you go right ahead.

You will count 8, including the afformentioned 2000 SEC title which you are trying to claim that we did not win in basketball. The trophy and banner says we did, as does the media guide and SEC office. This is just a hing, but Jerry Green's wikipedia page might not be the best place to reference if he won an SEC championship. As far as dictating bahevior, volfanmoron is the one googling wikipedia pages and secsports.com trying unsuccessfully like a moron to prove me wrong. Welcome to Tennessee, Col. There will be some good games to see. There will also be a level of diatribe and conversation about those games that will be pretty heated. As this story says, the men's athletic program finsihed first in the overall conference standings. The same conversations that are going on about football will begin to happen in basketball in the near future should Pearl not advance the team to the Final Four or win a national championship. Already people are complaining because he's only gotten us to the Sweet Sixteen, as if we were regulars there before. Anyway, as I said earlier, there will be some great games involving the Vols in all sports. Go ahead and learn Rocky Top because you'll hear it a lot.

WorkinLikeHeck,

I don't dispute that the UT men shared the regular season title in 2000, but that was not this decade. This decade started in 2001, not 2000. Read up on it here: http://hypercreations.com/david/2001....

So, your statement is incorrect and mine is correct. The football team finished first in the East 4 times (2001, 2003, 2004, 2007) and the basketball team twice (2006, 2008).

99Gator, response to the 5:24 post. Truthfully, Fulmer has been a polarizing figure since he ascended to the job of head coach after Majors. Conspiracy theories are plenty regarding that subject but you don't want to go down the road, especially on here.

Personally, I didn't sleep at all the night after the national championship game in '98 and spent about 3 years basking in an Orange haze. The 2001 SECG letdown against LSU was a big turning point in my thinking as for the fortunes of the program though. Things just haven't been the same for a number of reasons since then. 2005 was the low point and I believe Fulmer used up much of his "equity"(his term) with many of the fans that year.

Ok workin since you will not answer my question I will try to answer yours although it will not be good enough. I beleive the football team was in the final 2 and I beleive the basketball failed to make the tournament finals in the SEC and did not even get out the secound round and got beat by Butler. I think it is a wash.
Now answer my question how many elite 8 have the mens basketball program been to and how many national titles does Fulmer have?

Posted by auttat on May 21, 2008 at 3:19 p.m. (Suggest removal)

mjohnsonvols, UT bball did not get beat by Butler and they made it past the 2nd round in both the SEC and NCAA tourney. They had an incredible season and won, OUTRIGHT, their first SEC Title in over 40 years. Bruce Pearl is doing amazing things. The future looks very bright for the bball program. Not getting past the Sweet 16 is most likely viewed as a failure to most on the team, but the fact that it is viewed that way is a good thing. That has not always been the case.

The fact that UT fball lost the SEC Champ game is viewed as a failure because, well, it always has been viewed that way. Fulmer is just in a long line of successful coaches who created the expectation that UT should always be in the equation to win fball championships. Since they played for it, I would have to assume they were in the equation to win it.

mjohnson, I particularly love your lack of a fair analysis. It's hard to compare the 2 sports. I prefer to go by how the SEC office recognizes champions instead of making up my own comparisons as you attemtped to do. SEC recognizes the regular season champion in basketball as THE champion. In football, the winner if the SEC title game is THE champion.

Got beat by Butler? When did that happen? Being a Final 16 team out of 341 NCAA teams, finishing 9th overall, and actually winning a conference title, being ranked #1 at some point is better than finishing 12th out of 121 teams. That's hardly a wash.

Ashley, I appreciate your kind gesture, however, I will bring the nametags as I don't want anybody else to have to make any sort of effort for this shindig.

Posted by mjohnsonvols on May 21, 2008 at 3:36 p.m. (Suggest removal)

My fault about got beat by Butler. did get beat by Lousiville who did not win the big east. Since you will not answer I will they have never been in the elite 8. The football was among the top 16.
You are right it is hard to compare the 2 sports but I beleive that is what you are trying to do with Fulmer and Pearl.
By the way good luck to the great Paul Johnson. I hope he can win a week ACC since he is so good.
Hey man chill out a little I know you are getting called names but it is all part of the game. I would love to come by to the tailgate at the Florida game. I'm just shocked that you will be there since you hate Fulmer so bad.

Posted by WorkinLikeHeck on May 21, 2008 at 3:49 p.m. (Suggest removal)

It's really this simple...football team finished 12th out 121 teams, was never in top 10, didn't win a conference title.

Basketball team finsihed 9th out of 341 teams, was ranked #1, won a conference title and was top 10 pretty much all year.

Also, who said I was going to the game? Tailgating is far more fun than the actual games nowadays.

I never said Paul Johnson was a savior. Just one of several coaches out there could replicate what Foolmore has done the last 10 years.

Posted by mjohnsonvols on May 21, 2008 at 3:57 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Nobody remebers who wins a regular season basketball conference champioship. I'm not saying they had a bad year. I'm just stating some facts that they have never made it past the sweet 16. That is a fact. I was wrong about the Butler game that was a typo and I will admit that. Listen to what you said they one there first basketball title in 40 years. We blast Fulmer for not winning one since 1998. That is my point the basketball team is not doing much better than the football team in winning championships and that is all that matters to some on here. Me on the other hand I'm happy to be a TN fan. I think we are doing great things in athletics and I think the year to come could be very special in every sport.

Actually, that doesn't even matter as I am in the presence of friends, family, and am consuming mass amounts of alcohol so I am usually in a good mood when tailgating.

I'm in agreement with you mjvol. I would much rather go to the Outback Bowl every year than the Sweet 16.

Workin, the 220 extra teams that are playing bball suck and are not good enough to field a descent football team. Workin, the next time you run across a player from last years bball team, ask them if they would prefer to have the SECCG game trophy or the SEC regular season trophy.

workin

just figured (based on your posts) that you would be in a foul mood on a florida gameday because you would be certain of defeat.

i picture you drunk off your rear, yelling from your seat at other vol fans around you (if tenn is losing) "see, i told you so. you all want foolmore. now, look"

then, leaving midway through the third quarter to get reaquainted with your buddy, jack daniels.

"and am consuming mass amounts of alcohol"

Just like old Johnny.

by the way, i am not going back to read how all this started.....

i would rather be the regular season basketball champion, than the SEC tournament champion.

the regular season championship (especially if it is not shared) is a real accomplishment. Some teams do not even give their best effort in the conference tournament.

99gator, surely the guy you speak of is not smart enough to get on the internet, let alone, post on this site.

Of course, there is always an Internet for Dummies book, right workin?

99gator, agreed on the desire of winning a regular season over the tourney. Just amazed that they actually hand out a trophy to the Eastern and Western division champs. You have been on this site enough to appreciate the irony in that, right?

just giving you a little grief.

you are the dennis rodman of this website. agitate, agitate, agitate.

you get people on here more riled up than steve spurrier saying "you can't spell citrus without UT"

auttat

as long as tenn doesn't fly a flag at neyland stadium that reads "division champs" or prints T-shirts and other memorabilia that say "division champs".......you're ok.

Interesting. An article about our abysmal academic performance generates 65 comments. An article about how we whipped UFla by one freakin' point for the men's All-SEC Trophy generates over 165 comments. Kind of leads you to believe that Fowler was right.

Didn't Spurrier at one point say that one of the most overated stats is Phil Foolmore's winning percentage?

Also, I am in a good mood on gamedays. I really enjoy our band and pregame show.

Posted by 99gator on May 21, 2008 at 5:15 p.m. (Suggest removal)

well, to add more fuel to this fire....

i have heard that athlon sports has florida #1 in its preseason poll.

(yes, i know this means squat)

i don't think i have seen multiple teams from the same conference picked as a preseason #1 from the various publications that come out in june (athlon, lindy's, sporting news, etc)

workin: Count me in...would be worth the price of a ducat just to see you in a good mood. lol

Posted by 99gator on May 21, 2008 at 5:17 p.m. (Suggest removal)

actually in 1996, were tenn and florida ranked #1 by some of those publications.

Also thanks to Foolmore's lack of success going on a decade nowadays and getting blown out at home by Florida (30-13 in 2001), Alabama (34-14 in 2001), Auburn (34-10 in 2004), UGA (41-14 in 2004 and 27-14 in 2006) while also losing at home to South Carolina (in 2005) and Vandy (in 2005) who doesn't even have an athletic departnment, not to mention the hobnail boot to UGA and the Gaffney catch most games I sit there cheer the team on that's it. The real drama of the game is whether or not I am going to run out of whiskey or if I do a stumble and fumble of the whiskey bottle. If I run out, I usually can find reinforcements from somebody though.

you must have been a boy scout.

isn't there motto "be prepared"

can't run out of the liquid refreshments on a gameday.

2002 for Florida and Alabama game home blowouts. Thanks Ashley, you are good for something.

Also, UGA was 41-14 in 03 and then 27-14 in 05. Off a year.

20oz water bottles filled about 2/3 then squeeze the air out and you have one hell of a dispoable flask.

I prefer the old arm in a sling/broken arm trick. You can fit a whole 5th in there and not even get a look from the coppers.

Can you name one other team in the nation that has not had their misfortunes, workin? What about the decade of dominance over Alamullet and Georgia. Workin, I hate it like "heck" when we lose but for me to turn on the coach that over the past 16 seasons has consistently beat both Alamullet and Georgia is nuts. The tables were bound to turn with Alamullet and Georgia after 10 years of dominance and what better year for Vandy to finally beat us than 05. Your issue with CPF runs deeper than W's & L's. If it was about that you would have jumped ship back when Johnny lost more than he won during his first 5 years.

Hummmmmmmmmmmmm......arm in a sling. My wife might not like the idea but I just might have to try it. You know us rednecks over at RTM will try just about anythinig once or 3 or 4 times.
