Parker, Hornbuckle have record WNBA debuts

PHOENIX - Candace Parker had some jitters in her WNBA debut. It didn't show.

The former Tennessee Lady Vols star scored 34 points, the most in a WNBA debut, and added 12 rebounds to help the Los Angeles Sparks beat the defending champion Phoenix Mercury 99-94 on Saturday.

The previous high in a WNBA debut was 25 points by Cynthia Cooper in 1997.

"It obviously was better than I expected," said the 6-foot-5 Parker. "Coming out, I just wanted to play hard. I was a little nervous, and I think my teammates did a good job of just keeping me in it mentally and just not allowing me to get frustrated."

She scored 10 straight points to give the Sparks an 89-86 lead with 3:15 to play. Parker, who made 6 of 7 shots in the final quarter, hit a short hook shot to put the Sparks up 97-94 with 12 seconds to go.

"She's the money player," Los Angeles coach Michael Cooper said. "Put the ball in her hands and she did what she's supposed to do."

Parker, who wore a brace on her left shoulder, came within two assists of becoming the first WNBA rookie to record a triple-double. Only one NBA player did it in his debut - Oscar Robertson, in 1960.

"Honestly, it was just finding the mismatch," Parker said. "My teammates did a great job of just getting me the ball and just moving afterwards."

Lisa Leslie had 17 points and 12 rebounds for the Sparks. Former Lady Vol Sidney Spencer had 14 points.

Shock 85, Comets 66: Alexis Hornbuckle also introduced herself in record fashion, setting a Detroit mark with seven steals. Tennessee's all-time steals leader scored eight points.

"I just wanted to give us some energy and defense," Hornbuckle said. "I was over-thinking things early on, but I settled down."

Katie Smith scored 21 points for the Shock.

Former Lady Vol Michelle Snow scored nine points for Houston.

I think our former Lady Vols are having a great start in the WNBA. Awesome....Parker was amazing and I am so glad that she and the others did well. We will be watching ....

Parker really was amazing. As good as she was for UT, I found myself wondering where this kind of play from CP was during the "day in and day out" of last season. I think she had problems with simply being motivated due to a perceived lack of a serious challenge. Her first pro game apparently got her attention and got her attitude right -- and the level of her play spoke for itself.

Candance was headed for 50 but she couldn't make her free throws. I was hoping she would get in a rhythm from the line, but she didn't. She even made 2 treys, so we'll never know what could have happened if she would have been making them.

The WNBA will soon be renamed the VAL (Vol Alumni League)

Shannon Bobbitt got a fair amount of playing time for the Sparks, too, and for a while she, Parker, and Sidney Spencer were on the floor together - Lady Vols West Coast version! And all three hit three-pointers (Spencer had four of 'em).

Great debuts for our former Lady Vols but I am not suprised. Glad Candace shut up some of the folks who thought she was "over hyped". She rises to the challenge and has to be challenged for all to see just how great she is. Lex was just Lex at her best, doing her thing. Hope Nicky has a great debut too.
Do we Lady Vol fans realize how special these young women are and will be and how lucky we were to get to see them mature ? Thank you Coach Summitt and staff !!!

Candace was awesome! Even against the defending WNBA champs, her skill level was off the charts. If a couple more teammates had hit some easy shots, she would have had the triple-double. Sidney and Shannon looked good while they were in there, but I was puzzled that neither of them got off the bench in the second half. Sidney hit everything she put up, and Coach Michael Cooper was quoted as saying that she would be the "X factor" for the Sparks this year. She seemed to have solved that particular "unknown" in the first quarter, yet she hardly saw the court after a sizzling start.

Superb job by the former Lady Vols on the floor last night.....Can anyone, in their infinate wisdom and in less than 50 words, explain to me why Sidney Spencer did not play at all in the 2nd half after scoring 14 points in 11 and a half minutes (including 4 three pointers) in the first half......I kept waiting for Spenc to come back out, but she never did.....She stood tall as a cheerleader on the sidelines though......

garyfmtn, I think Sids' defense (or lack of) kept her out of the second half. Hopefully, she can realize that she is going to have to get better in that aspect to get more playing time so she can keep hitting those 3s.

Will be fun to see how Nicky does tonight against Lex and the Shock. Back-to-back games, wow. WNBA is different in many ways and CP and some of the others will make it much better. Let's hope cities lucky enough to have a team, will support it.

Can you imagine if Knoxville had the Dream instead of Atlanta ??????????

Thanks for that info.....I understnad what you are saying, but she was not playing much better defense on the sidelines and the way the Sparks lost the big lead in the 3rd quarter, I don;t think too many others were playing stout defense for them.....
How in the world can the capital of women's basketball NOT have a pro team????

Maybe someone from Thompson-Boling can contact the Atlanta Dream and try to get a pre-season game here next year. Several teams had pre-season games "away" this year, trying to grow the fan base.
I think we would have a very good turnout, especially if they would play someone with a couple of ex Lady Vols on the team !!!

garyfmtn if you can get away, there are still tickets available Sunday, May 25th when the Sparks invade Atlanta !!!

Either an exhibition game or maybe the All Star Game......since the majority of the All Stars are going to be former Lady Vols or at least have already played in thompson Bolling......As far as the Dream goes, former Lady Vol Director of Basketball Operations, Danielle Donahew is now in the front office with the Dream.....Maybe that will give Knoxville an "in" to get some kind of game up here.....As far as next Sunday goes, I have to work but believe you me, if possible, I would be at Phillips Arena if at all possible......

The WNBA is ONLY in NBA cities.

0 SEC players on the Atl. Dream!
0 Lady Vols on Atl., Chicago, Conn., Phoenix and Washington.

CP3 (LA) WOW what an awesome dominating performance!

Shannon (LA) 3 points, 2 boards and 2 assists – that’ll get better.

Sid (LA) had to play 24 minutes last year because the Sparks were short on bodies but she’s going to have to pick up her D or those minutes will be cut.

Catch (IND) is recovering from a torn Achilles heel from last year so there is no idea when she'll be back.

Nicky (MN) plays tonight and that team looks like they are loaded for bear!

Zo (SAN) is out for the year after tearing her ACL last week.

Shyra (SEA) only played 16 minutes yesterday netting 6 points, 3 boards and 1 steal. Doesn't look like she'll be starting this year either.

Lex (DET) had 8 points, 7 steals and 2 rebounds in 19 minutes.

Tiff and Loree (NY) play today.

Kara (SAC) had 9 points, 3 assists and 4 boards which is about half of her average.

Ashley (SEA) had 2 points and 3 rebounds in 10 minutes of play.

Michelle (HOU) had 9 points, 4 boards and 1 block in 18 minutes.
