Former Tennessee offensive lineman Cameron Mayo was arrested Wednesday and charged with three drug-related misdemeanors after police searched his car outside a friend's Fort Sanders apartment near UT campus.
Mayo, a Dalton, Ga., native who graduated Friday, called police around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday to report a possible robbery at a friend's apartment, which he was watching while his friend was out of town, Knoxville police said.
During the course of the investigation, which centered on a missing AR-15 semi-automatic rifle and a .45-caliber Beretta pistol, police asked for and received permission to search Mayo's vehicle.
That search turned up a "minor amount" of marijuana in a black plastic bag and an unlabeled bottle of pills, later determined to be "oxycodine," a prescription pain killer, KPD spokesman Darrell DeBusk said. Police also found rolling papers and a tube that police said could be used to snort crushed pills.
Mayo faces three misdemeanor charges: possession of a Schedule II substance, possession of a Schedule VI substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
His friend arrived on the scene around 8:30 p.m., confirming the two guns were missing.

If Coach Fulmer would have helped this kid more while he was at UT, maybe he wouldn't have turned out so bad. Unreal. But this once again proves that John Adams was correct.
Why do single people in their early 20's feel the need to have assault rifles and handguns? I'm all for gun ownership and the right to bear arms. But a pump shotgun would do the trick for protection of property. Having a bunch of weapons around for a status symbol is just asking for trouble and is going to get you or someone else killed eventually. Apparently somebody knew he had these because they stole them. And mixing in drugs with these weapons is another recipe for disaster. Stupid.

vol13, speaking technically....a pump shotgun or semi-auto shotgun is VERY effective for the average guy. In fact, it is more effective than a handgun or assault rifle in close range.
Assault rifles are meant for longer range, 3-5 shot bursts by trained soldiers. Even a machine pistol can be hard to contorl. A shotgun?? Aim at the general area, and you pretty much have a hit.

Vol13, to blame this on Fulmer is totally unfair. What about Mayo's parents? They don't have any responsibility? What about Mayo himself? All this stuff just happened to him? I hate that it did go down this way because he has had a tough go of it since he's been at UT. The oxycontin problem could have resulted from his surgery. There are many people who have drug problems who hide them very well. This isn't Fulmer's fault and it doesn't prove Adams was right. As for the comment about guns and drugs not mixing, you're right. There's no indication that the two were mixed, however. The guns belonged to a friend and were in that friend's apartment. They weren't Mayo's and there's nothing in the story that leads one to believe that Mayo was using the drugs and handling the guns.

Vol13.
I quess you haven't lived in the fort in the last 10 years. The crime is outrageous, robberies occur all the time and it is the UT students getting robbed. Now it appears the police are trying to rob the students by targeting them instead of the thugs and homeless drunks wondering around waiting on some 19 year old coed to walk out her door with her pocket book.

I think this article as well as many others this week are just a result of a story falling in their laps and lazy reporting. I could be wrong...they could have a GREAT story lined up for the weekend edition. Wouldn't it be great to have a story on a recruit or even one on player training in the summer or anything that requires effort more than what they can hear on the police scanner? I guess I am just being optimistic.

And police wonder why people don't call them. What made the police decide to search Mayo's car? I would hope that if I called the police to report a burglary that the police would not immediately suspect me. I would bet my paycheck this will be dismissed very quickly due to an illegal search.
Weird story. Only in Knoxville.
Posted by WorkinLikeHeck on May 15, 2008 at 5:01 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Not really that weird. Early morning phone call in the Fort from someone who claims he is watching a friend's apartment who is out of town. Probably just checking to make sure Mayo wasn't the one who stole the reported stolen items. If they didn't do that they probably wouldn't be doing their jobs, but yeah only in Knoxville and only would make news on the KNS. Don't really see the point of this being reported though.
Posted by Vol13 on May 15, 2008 at 5:11 p.m. (Suggest removal)
The comment about Fulmer was tongue in cheek.
Now, let's play Rockford here.
1) Mayo knew that guns were missing from the apartment.
2) Therefore, Mayo knew that the guy had guns.
3) Mayo was apartment sitting for this guy or at the least going to check by periodically.
It's not out of the realm of possibility to believe that guns were out in the open at the apartment during times when drugs were being used. I'm not saying that they were sitting around watching Wheel of Fortune, smokin' Mary Jane, and playing Draw. I was implying more the fact that if you had access to a gun, were high, and something happened then there are a lot of bad ways that story could end.

When a wife is murdered, who is the first person they investigate? The husband. Same thing. They are thinking ahead when they investigate the guy that called in. Don't you think they've faced this situation before when the guy that called really did the robbing? I'm just glad that he didnt steal the guns because he woulda been in deep with guns and drugs.

I would bet it is safe to say there is a lot of things your children do or have done that you are not aware of but you have taught them right from wrong. Does that mean you are not a responsible parent or it is your fault because they didn't listen? Give it up on putting the blame on others when the blame is in the person commiting the act.

Simple facts here:
Mayo is an adult, above the age of 21 which in this country means he can
1) vote
2) legally drink
3) be drafted
4) live on his own without his parents
All of that eliminates anyone as being responsible other than Mayo himself.
If you think otherwise you are part of the problem that is over taking American society today.
As an adult you make the decisions that directly affect your life. It is not you parents fault, your coaches fault, you brother or sisters fault it is YOUR FAULT.
Mayo had choices to make and apparently he made the wrong ones. To blame anyone other than him is to give him an excuse to make the same wrong decisions again. He did not make it through HS without having classes in illegal drug use and the penelties for using them. Too many of the folks in our society make the bad decison involving drugs because it is now acceptable to blame someone else for us making that bad decision.
It is not a question of "should pot be legal" because it is NOT legal and until that is changed, and I don't see it happening, it is against the law.
"Stupid is as stupid does"
I hope this will wake Mayo up and he gets on the right path. The stats should however the odds are not in his favor.

"If Coach Fulmer would have helped this kid more while he was at UT, maybe he wouldn't have turned out so bad. Unreal. But this once again proves that John Adams was correct."
This statement is stupid. No coach can baby sit 100 players that are in a program much less those that are out of it. A coach can do his best to be a positive influence for 4 or 5 years but it is unreasonable to blame every guy that goes bad on his coach... Why not go back and blame his Pop Warner coach?... He had the kid in his "formative years" so his culpability must be many times that of his college coach, right?

Some of you lack basic reading and comprehension skills beyond 1st grade. Too funny.
Posted by invisiblekid on May 16, 2008 at 8:33 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Pure speculation, but it could be that Mr. Mayo had the odor of marijuana about his person which resulted in the search. Either way, he was doing something illegal and got caught for it, simple as that.
Personally, I think what happened to the guns is the more important issue at hand though, people usually don't steal guns with good intentions.
As far as why it's being reported by KNS, well it is the Information Age, even if most of it is useless.
And lastly, at least Mayo wasn't arrested for performing circumcisions under the influence of drugs.

My point wasn't that the parents should be blamed. The point was that if you are going to blame Fulmer, you should place blame on his parents and teachers as well. Ultimately he is responsible. I agree blaming others is not the answer. That was the point I was trying to make, rather facetiously.

There is something missing in this story. Why would the police want search the car of someone reporting a crime. In this case possible burglary of two guns. I've never been in this position, but for most of us who were raised like I know Mayo was; it's hard to say no to police. All of it will probably go back to his injuries, but I still want to know WHY the police wanted to search his car? I know we could make guesses, but I would prefer to know the truth.

Wow , this story is crazy in so many ways. First , whats he thinking letting them check his car , not the best call he's ever made. Second, if im the police im gonna be worrying about the freakin semi-automatic machine gun in the hands of some moron criminal. When First Tennessee on the strip gets held up for a couple hundred grand in the next few weeks they might realize that importance. I mean we arent talking about grandad's ole .22 here. If i were the cops id be leaning more toward that issue than a bowl of weed and a few pills. Half of the people that live in the fort have that in their car or on their person , i know this as a formet student and resident of Fort Sanders. Oh, and i gotta agree i always had the ole Remington 12 gauge laying by my bed

I know Cam Mayo very well. He came to UT with many other SEC and ACC offers available to him and blew his knee up his first year. He has had several surgeries to try to get back and and has been through months and years of painful rehab and will be in pain for the rest of his life from it. There is nothing wrong with Cam Mayo that isn't true of a large part of the student body. He made a mistake. He should not be lumped together with some of the losers that have come through this program.
He is not some drug head that needs to get his life together. He made a stupid mistake but he is a good young man from good parents. A little gullible maybe but not a loser in any stretch of the term. I'll take him any day.

I've known the Mayos for quite a while. Knew Cam growing up. Never got in trouble here. Pretty sure he didn't do any drugs here. Here being the typical No. Georgia place. Whatever that means.
Someone suggested that he wasn't the brightest. I don't think he was much of a scholar in High School, but at UT....he made the Dean's list.
So, at UT, a "not very bright kid", made the Dean's List (how hard can school be at UT) and learned to use drugs, either on his own or with some of those quality kids that come through there...you know the ones yet to be kicked off and show up at UTC.
What conclusions could we draw from a young persons time in Knoxville?
I'm just glad you are keeping Fulmer there.
