Charlie Ford tamed Ohio State University’s Scarlet Course on Thursday, but none of his teammates matched his success.
Ford is tied for second place after the opening round of the NCAA Central Regional golf tournament.
Tennessee, playing without SEC All-Freshman honoree Robin Wingardh, is back in a three-way tie for 12th place with two rounds to play.
Ford’s 1-under-par round of 70 placed the senior from England in a five-way tie for second, one stroke behind Wake Forest’s Brendan Gielow.
Tennessee’s team score of 17-over-par is two strokes out of 10th place, the cutoff to advance to the NCAA championship event.
Philip Pettitt shot 5-over 76. Redshirt freshman Cameron Lawrence, playing in his third tournament, shot a 77. Lawrence filled in for Wingardh, who is out due to mononucleosis.
Chris Paisley finished at 78 and David Holmes struggled at 11-over 82.
“It was certainly not the start we wanted,’’ UT coach Jim Kelson said, “but we put ourselves in position to advance.’’
Wake Forest leads the team scoring at 6-over.
