FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The NCAA says transfer quarterback Ryan Mallett must sit out a year before playing for the Razorbacks.
Arkansas had asked the NCAA to waive the requirement that Mallett sit out a year. Mallett transferred from Michigan after retiring coach Lloyd Carr was replaced by Rich Rodriguez.
Mallett must spend one year at school at Arkansas before being eligible to play for the Razorbacks. Mallett practiced with Arkansas this spring, but missed much of the spring practice with a thumb injury.
The 6-foot-7 Mallett, who played in 11 games for the Wolverines last year, has three years of eligibility remaining.
Mallett was 61-of-141 for 892 yards with seven touchdown passes and five interceptions last season at Michigan while filling in for Chad Henne when the senior was injured.
Mallett went to high school on the Texas side of Texarkana, but lived on the Arkansas side.
“For now, I will focus on finishing up the semester academically, rehabilitating my (thumb) injury and getting prepared for preseason camp,” Mallett said. “I look forward to taking the field for the Razorbacks when I have that opportunity.”
The university says Mallett can practice with the team, but not play during the 2008 season.
“As an institution and a football program we felt it was very important to offer our support and assistance to Ryan and his family in their appeal process,” coach Bobby Petrino said in a statement. “Ryan and his family understood from the beginning that precedent did not suggest that the NCAA was likely to grant the appeal.”
Friday’s decision has eliminated one competitor for returning starter Casey Dick, who went 33-of-49 for 404 yards in last week’s spring game.

Casey Dick threw for 404 in the spring game???? They must not have had a defense in the game at the time.

That's the rule, Mallet. Get over it and move on.
33 of 49 for 404 yards? Fayetteville's pee-wee flag football team must have been on D. Dick's not that good.

No surprise here. Mallett's transfer to Arkansas from Michigan wasn't due to anything extraordinary, so there was no way the NCAA was going to grant this.
This just isn't a newsworthy story.

99gator, those were my exact thoughts... though I'm not nearly as happy about it as you are.
BigVol, I don't know if it was the basis of the request but Rodriguez seemed to make it clear to Mallett that he wasn't wanted.

Has to sit out and hurt already. Man, we missed out there!

I actually sympathize with Mallett and the Hogs. Other than maybe D-Mac, Mallett is the most high profile recruit to come out of Arkansas in a long time... and he got away at first. I wonder if he doesn't regret his decision now?

mallett is from texas and arkansas was never on his radar screen as a recruit. he went to michigan and transferred to arkansas to play for petrino.....not go to arkansas.
you are probably thinking of mustain, who went to arkansas and left to go to usc after the whole gus malzahn thing.

don't shed a tear for lsu.
1. while i do not know what lsu will do at qb (which is a big deal), they are LOADED everywhere else.
2. perilloux deserved his fate

99gator 8:57am - listened to Tony Barnhardt-AJC on the Doug Mathews Show on 104.5 the Zone this am. Tony said LSU will rule the West again and Ga should be favored in the East. Just a scribe's opinion, but interesting.
He's a pretty decent scribe at AJC.com. Even for a Ga boy.

I quote: "Mallett went to high school on the Texas side of Texarkana, but lived on the Arkansas side." He and his family live in Arkansas. I suggest 99gator that you learn to read and comprehend before you post.

The rule is the rule and I'm glad to see the NCAA not grant his appeal.
