LSU QB Perrilloux dismissed

NEW ORLEANS — LSU quarterback Ryan Perrilloux was kicked off the defending national championship team Friday after a college career marked by legal and disciplinary problems.

Perrilloux “didn’t fulfill his obligation as an LSU student-athlete,” coach Les Miles said in a statement. “Ryan was given every opportunity to be a part of this football team.”

Perrilloux, a sophomore, was a backup to Matt Flynn last season. He showed glimpses of great promise, drilling receivers downfield or punishing tacklers while running the option.

He played sparingly in LSU’s victory over Ohio State for the national title, but the starting job next season appeared his provided he could avoid trouble off the field.

Perrilloux’s lawyer, Nathan Fisher, declined comment Friday. Phone calls to the home of Perrilloux’s mother in LaPlace, La., went unanswered.

The quarterback is expected to finish the spring semester, LSU officials said. He must do so to remain eligible to play next season if he transfers.

Perrilloux was suspended last summer and during recent spring drills. He was on the fringe of a counterfeiting investigation and was caught trying to enter a Baton Rouge casino with false identification. He also was involved in a nightclub fight in November, causing him to miss a game at Alabama. He was cleared of wrongdoing.

Miles again suspended Perrilloux, whose father died Feb. 7, in mid-February after he missed a team meeting, skipped some classes and was late for some conditioning workouts.

Perrilloux had to meet academic requirements and do extra conditioning before he was reinstated April 6, in time to go with the Tigers to meet President Bush at the White House. Perrilloux was not allowed to play in LSU’s spring game.

Before his last reinstatement, Miles said Perrilloux had been doing better with classwork. During the spring, redshirt freshman Jarrett Lee and junior Andrew Hatch, a transfer from Harvard, split time as the quarterback of the Tigers.

Appearing in 12 of LSU’s 14 games last season with two starts, Perrilloux completed 51 of 75 passes (68 percent) for 694 yards, eight touchdowns and two interceptions. Perrilloux also rushed 50 times for 207 yards and two touchdowns.

Perrilloux’s second start came in the Southeastern Conference championship game, when Flynn was too hurt to play. Perrilloux was 20-of-30 passing for 243 yards and a touchdown in a 21-14 victory over Tennessee.

Perrilloux was widely considered the nation’s most sought quarterback recruit when he played at East St. John High School in Louisiana.

Perrilloux’s former coach at East St. John, Larry Dauterive, said he had not heard from his former player but had fielded more than a dozen calls from Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) programs hoping to land Perrilloux as a transfer.

“I want to see him surface. I want to see him get on the field because he’s such a talented athlete,” Dauterive said. “I’ve been doing this 39 years and I’ve never seen anybody do with a football what he can do. I don’t know if his priorities are screwed up or what. He’s the best athlete I’ve ever been around — ever.”

Dauterive said he never had a problem with Perrilloux and is “flabbergasted” by the troubles in college.

“He’s a phenom,” Dauterive said. “And to throw that away, it’s mind-boggling to me. I just hope he comes to his senses.”

Perriloux owned Foolmore.

Surprised Miles did this. Perrilloux was only on his fifth chance. Just wait - Adams will write one of his esoteric articles bestowing the virtuous Miles as the role model of all coaches.

probably should have 2000 but then that wouldn't have gave them a shot at the sec and national title would it.

Wow. You win a NC, you have a chance to be the starting QB for one of the best teams in the nation, you have the opportunity to meet the president of the united states and you blow it because you are too stupid to show some humility.

I'm all for second chances, but this guy is an idiot. Come see me after you've done what D Moreley did and we'll talk.

This clears the way for all of General Fritter's prognostications to be fulfilled. UT will hoist the Sears Trophy after setting an NCAA single-season record for most INTs returned for TDs. Beware the Goon Squad.

Perriloux didn't write the book on idiocy but he could be a footnote. I don't see him doing what Morley did marc_ash.

One of the many "directional institutions" in Bayou Country will likely pick up his contract.

Yeah, I lost big in that first marriage. What's the divorce rate anyhow? That's right about 50%. So half the people that get married get divorced? I'm not divorced so this doesn't even apply to me anyeay. I don't see this as being relevant to anything we are discussing.

Where we get mad when the Capital One Bowl is out destination instead of having to beg and plead (and get special deals cut by our AD) to make to Outback Bowl?

However, it isn't that hard....people just don't want to put in the work. Sad too, because it is often much easier to just tighten up and make amends, than to try and buck the system.

He may or may not learn his lesson. I wish him the best. Now it's time for him to learn on his own. Give his scholarship to someone who want's to be successful.

WorkinLikeHeck,

I'm assuming you are responding to my comment about the privileged/spolied children. I want to clarify that I didn't say "most D I players were". I wasn't even referring to athletes at all for that matter. What I did say is that it was "hard to change from a privileged spoiled child to a man." I believe that statement is true (even aside from athletics).

I believe the actions that Perrilloux displayed were extremely childish and that it was in part due to arrogance (IMO traits of someone who is spoiled and privileged). So, again I was not making any reference to DI football players or athletes in general.

His behavior dictated my statement...which I believe is spot on.

Kris -

Who said win a national title every year? I just want a program that averages 10 regular season wins a year, wins a conference title once every 4 years, and makes a BCS bowl 2 out of every 5. That means split with UGA/Florida, lose to a team in the west, and take care of business oout of conference.

Yes, some years we might lose 3, some years we might lose 1. But give me a break that what we have now (since 2001) is sufficient.

Posted by WorkinLikeHeck on May 2, 2008 at 1:14 p.m. (Suggest removal)

That's what I figured marc, but Perriloux was not spoiled or priviledged. His arrogance came from being the "man", the 5 star recruit, the best, etc. and hearing it from his posse/entourage from childhood. He probably would have been served well to go far away from home. He was too close to his friends and friends to close to Baton Rouge (probably about 35 minutes or so).

Posted by marc_ash on May 2, 2008 at 1:16 p.m. (Suggest removal)

rusty_shackleford,

You post a good questions (one that I've asked before to the Fulmer "naysayers"). Who would be a good fit for UT. Some of the names that floated around last season were interesting, but have since moved on. Kippy Brown was an option, but wanted to keep the NFL option opened. Better fit for him. Rodriguez was mentioned, but I don't think would have been a good fit at UT. I personally don't think he will be that great for UM anytime soon. He might since he has a talent machine, but it will be tough to get past O. State any time soon. Norm Chow was thrown around, but taking an OC job at UCLA says a lot to me. Would have thought if he was going back to the college ranks, it would have been as a HC.

Honestly Rusty, I came up with the same answer I had last season...I don't know that anyone AT THE TIME would have done a better job than Coach Fulmer. Now? Hmmmm, I think I might have to say the same thing. All the coaches I listed have already made moves and aren't really options anymore. I suppose as crazy as it seems, I probably wouldn't mind if Spurrier came to town. Other than that, I don't see anyone else as a realistic option who would put the Vols in a drastically better possition than they are now.

Unfortunately, the attitude of players involved in these scandals is that they can do whatever they want and if they get caught they'll transfer to Division 1-AA.

Posted by marc_ash on May 2, 2008 at 1:22 p.m. (Suggest removal)

alfrizzle097,

I think the future is good for UT. The Vols have been able to maintain a strong strong program over the years despite many changes. Although the program has not had a title since 98, it has maintained a high level of football in the hardest conference in America for years (save the 5-6 season).

Fulmer and the University have done a lot to make changes over the years. After the 5-6 season, changes in the O had to be made. Firing Sanders was the best thing UT could have ever done. Cut was brought in and did well IMO. But...more changes needed to be made. House was cleaned. I think Fulmer has done 1. What he has been asked to do and 2. What he should have done. The game is about change, and Fulmer understands that.

I think the Vols will see what happens this season. Seems the philosophy is changing as well as the personel. I think it is an exciting time for Vol football. I believe we will see a lot in the next couple of years of how successful the experiment is with the new coaches in place. I'm optimistic.

I'm afraid the times have changed in CF. There aren't gonna be too many coaches like Paterno, Bowden, and yes, Fulmer who stay at a school for 15+ years, win games, go Bowling, plus all the other crapola that goes with the job.

I think we are both talking about the same thing, just viewing it differently.

I believe Per was spoiled and privileged. I'm not referring to how much money he had or whether or not he had a silver spoon in his mouth. I was referring to his mentality. People that are "the man" as you suggest (and I agree with) have a choice to make. They can continue to live life with humility and for others, or they can live life only for themselves. IMO, he did the latter.

I think when you put yourself before other people, you are 100% destined for failure. Even the Bible gives us that one.

It seems everyone dodges the question about who would be a good replacement for Fulmer. I can't think of a coach who has as much of a winning tradition for as long. We all know that football teams go in cycles. And yes, I was saying that there is no team that wins a championship every year. except USC in the weak PAC 1+ 9. I am happy with where we are. There are always improvements to be made. But Tennessee is a great team. And the SEC is tough conference. Ask Ohio State. Anyone can find something wrong with any team. And probably the same gripes that are on here. That's why I choose to celebrate the wins and forget the losses. It's just a game. I don't live and die by it. My life successes aren't dictated by our football team. I will always bleed orange. And I do understand that many things, like injuries. The fact these kids are at an age where you can't always count on their behavior. And many other factors go into each season. I expect the best. But I enjoy watching a quality team every year. Oh yeah. What were the names of replacements?

wjackson, I'm with you. Survive a couple of real problems in this world and football games take on the proper perspective. Enjoy it, but don't base your own self worth on something you can't control!

Ron Zook for coach! OMG, where are my meds?

Posted by marc_ash on May 2, 2008 at 1:32 p.m. (Suggest removal)

rusty_shackleford,

By no means to I take away what spurrier did at UF (and is even doing at USC). That is why I said I wouldn't mind if he came to town. He's one heck of a coach, and I think he could pull some good talent into Knoxville if he were the Vols coach.

I do agree that coaches are lifelongers anymore. Least that remains to be seen I suppose. But I don't think it is a loyalty thing anymore as much as it is a dollars issue. Money is getting so insane that it is hard for coaches to not go to the next spot for a payday (see Saban).

However, I think Fulmer is doing EXACTLY what he needs to do to continue his career (and that is make changes). Bowden and Joe Pa haven't made changes (well, Bowden just in the last year or so) in years. They expected to get talent, and ran the system that worked for them. Now, talent isn't just going to ND, Penn ST FSU or Miami anymore. Schools have to work, and the system is changing. I think Fulmer is doing what he needs to do by staying fresh and making changes. I like what I'm seeing, at least from a philosophical perspective that is.

wjackson,

I've presented my opinion on this just a couple of posts ago. However, the question is answered differently by the way you asked it. You said who would be a good replacement instead of who would be a REALISTIC replacement.

IMO, there are some coaches that I feel would do well at UT. Either for their coaching abilities or their recruiting (or both). I think Meyer would be a great fit. He's been successful and has a good recruiting base. I think Les Miles would do well. I believe almost anyone would love to have Pete Carroll or even Jim Tressell. However, none of these is even close to realistic.

If you take the coaches who are available, I'm back to my original argument which is no one would be "better" than what Fulmer is now.

I am a Fulmer supporter, but moreso I'm a Vols supporter. I feel CPF did what he needed to do in making changes. I like that, and feel confident the Vols are heading in the right direction. I could complain, but it could always be much worse.

TJ -

I don't let me life be dictated by UT sports, but I expect more than what is produced.

Case in point - SC last year. I felt like we lost that game, and I look around and people are hugging and screaming like I did when we won the NC in 98. I see the paper the next day and it's a picture of Hamilton and Fulmer celebrating a miraculous achievement....and we'd just blown a 21-0 lead and beaten a team that would eventually finish 6-6 and miss a bowl.

Sorry, maybe I'm just a spoiled 90s fan, but that just doesn't cut it.

Amen to following the money. It's getting insane! And the younger coaches are taking care of themselves...don't blame 'em.

The Top 10 aren't the top ten anymore. Geez, when Kentucky is talking about winning the SEC, things have definitely changed! ;-)

BTW, we need to start a pool on when saban will leave bama. I'll take 2009...before the Auburn game.

as far as kentucky and vandy go, i am not so sure it's that ut is getting worse, yet, that kentucky and vandy are getting better. hell, there are kids in our own backyard who are going d1 and would have come to ut five or six years ago, now they're going to places like kentucky, just look at how many alcoa guys have committed to uk. i believe dustin lyndsay, who committed to ut, has decided he wants to go to uk now, even though he can't get in because of grades.

But give me a break that what we have now (since 2001) is sufficient."

And I want world peace and a fat bank account so I can play golf everyday. So, since I want that I should be entitled to it, right?

UT went to a BCS(I know it wasn't a BCS in '97) bowl 3 years in a row, and was in a position to go in '01, '04, and '07. Most logical fans are saying that they are not that far off. this is great...I'll give you one name that could at the very least match what Foolmore has done the last 9 years. Odds are he would do better than that though. He isn't a clear cut #1 or the best coach in America, although I think he is very, very good football coach. He's won on every level, at faraway places and made history at Ga Southern, Hawaii, and Navy. Plus, GT only pays him about 1.6 million so he would actually be a realistic get and probably couldn't turn us down if the opportunity presented itself. Besides he was born basicallu on the NC-TN border in Newland, NC so he is basically about as East TN as you can get without being from East TN. Paul Johnson.

Posted by spam247buster on May 2, 2008 at 2:30 p.m. (Suggest removal)

"they no nothing"?

Most of the people who want Fulmer fired are, in fact, idiots who don't have any remotely realistic suggestions for replacements who would have a decent chance of doing better than Fulmer.
The reason that they don't have any remotely realistic suggestions for replacements is that there are VERY FEW coaches who (A) would come here if Phil was fired and (B) could improve on his record.
If you want the football equivalent of Buzz Peterson, yes, you could find a replacement for Fulmer very easily.
A few examples: spurrier would NEVER come here (the hatred goes back to the '60's, and he's washed up anyway-- Fulmer owns him, 3 out of the last 4 meetings btw), Pete Carroll wouldn't leave USC for anywhere else (he has the best/easiest coaching gig in the country-- patsy conference and easy recruiting due to great climate, pretty girls, and wealth of in-state talent in CA), urban meyer knows he couldn't recruit well enough in-state as a UT coach to run his system successfully (similar to the reason that he spurned Notre Dame's advances in favor of coaching at florida).
I'm looking forward to next season-- the Vols will have the best secondary in the nation, Chavis will have the linebackers ready as always, and the offense is going to be new and exciting. How many days, Ashley?

The best thing to do is ignore the cat. He is just one of those people that will post negatively towards anything. If everyone on this board would just skip his posts and not read them, then he/she will go away. He/She has obviously never played any sport or coached any sport outside of his/her daughter's tee ball team. Asking his/her advice on who they want to coach the UT football team is about the equivalent to asking Stevie Wonder's advice of a girl's looks. The truth is, if we wrote down Fulmer's stats on a piece of paper without his name next to it, people would say that is the best possible fit. I don't agree with everything he does, but I'll be the last to make screennames to degrade the man. Too bad others can't get past playing 3rd grade games.

Just my 2 cents

Johnson is a fine coach and did well at GSU and Navy (small programs). He loved a power run offense at both which is very old news in the SEC. Not sure what he runs now. 7-6 last year at GT isn't setting the woods on fire, though. And he lost to UGA and Fresno in the bowl. Folks around here don't like losing to the arch-enemy and bowl games!

9 seasons as a head coach 99-34 .744 not bad going up agianst Furman, Citadel, Temple, North Texas, Delaware wow some big teams in there that he has beat.
Fulmer was 91-19 in his first 9 seasons to try and make this fair. He has beat teams like Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Florida ST. The teams are terrible. Now he is 147-45 still has a better winning percentage. Wait you have me sold Paul beat Duke last year and he has beaten Army and App st in the past. I'm with you now Workin let's fire foolmore for Paul Johnson.

I'm an idiot according to mjohnsonvols because he wants to compare what Fulmer did 9 years ago as opposed to what he has done the last 9 years and compare that side by side with who Paul Johnson has beaten. Thank God we weren't so short sighted when the only 2 teams Pearl had beaten of any significance (using yout logic) was an Alabama basketball team.

Yeah, winning consistently at Ga Southern (who plays in the toughest I-AA conference in the country) and then at Navy (especially at Navy with what is no doubt one of the least talented teams in the country) is easy.

Yes folks, there you have it.

Workin is "very familiar" with St. John the Baptist Parish. Knows all about the economics of the area, the quality of housing, the neighborhood that Ryan P. grew up in, even who his HS principal was.

I've lived in SE Louisiana for nearly a decade, and I've driven through Reserve maybe 5 times. Reserve, LA is a little podunk town in the middle of swamp and bayou country between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. Not much to see but sugar cane fields around the area.

It has a typical mixture of wealth and poverty that you will find in Louisiana. However, there are lots of plants in this part of the country, and most chemical plant employees in this heavily unionized area earn as much if not more than some lawyers and even doctors.

I have no idea if Ryan P. is from a rich family or a poor family. I have no idea if his dad is a professional or if his dad is a plant man. He may be unemployed for all I know. But I gaurantee that nobody has published Ryan P.'s family's tax returns or done an expose on his upbringing. It almost sounds like a touch of racism driving Workin's comments.

In Workin's defense, Paul Johnson was a better suggestion than I was expecting, but Phil doesn't lose to cream puffs like Delaware, Ball State, Tulsa, Stanford, Tulane, Rice, etc. I'm surprised that you would want a coach that does.

I know 1-AA is tough man I tell you SEC VS 1AA Southern Conference man I really don't thing LSU or Florida could compete in the conference and I reall think TN would have a loosing record in the conference. I have taken the liberty to point out Duke's record last year. The closest game they played in besides beating Northwestern was against Navy. Workin, please explain how the next great gameday coach at UT can have such a close game with Duke? If he has enough talent to win 8 games, he surely has enough talent to put Duke away soundly. And, please draw the parallel to UT vs. SC, or Vandy or Kentucky. You know, the teams that play in the SEC and 2 of which were ranked higher than UT the majority of the season.

Actually, volfanlsu, I have a friend from high school that coaches at my old high school who has sent 4 players to LSU the past several years (Nick Child, Craig Steltz, Kevin Steltz, and PJ Lonergan). He's done a bunch of camps at LSU and is in pretty constant communication with some of the LSU staff and also hears things from his former players on what is going on from time to time. These coaching camps also feature other high school coaches such as East St. John's and high school coaches like to talk when they get together. Ryan P was a topic of conversation the last few year for obvious reasons.

Good Argument today Workin have to go now but I will argue with you another day you bash Fulmer.
No hard feelings dude just like to argue with you.

Ashley, the parallel was made that while at Ga Southern, Johnson beat whoever he played. Finished in 1st place in the 5 years he was there in the toughest conference in the division that they played in.

I also wonder why moronjohnsonvols didn't want to post Foolmore's last 9 years coaching which are more relevant today than his first 9 years of coaching.

Let's see Paul Johnson took over a 4-7 GSU team in 1997 and finished in 1st 5 straight years and won 2 national titles. Then he took over NAvy who was 1-20 in the previous 2 years, went 2-10 and then went on to 5 straight winning seasons and 4 bowl games at Navy. Yeah, he can't coach and those are about on the same level as what Fulmer inherited when he took over a team that had won the SEC title 2 out of the last 3 years.

actually Ga. Southern didn't beat everyone they faced... they lost to an ETSU team that was pathetic at best ... I remember I was there... that was hillarious... Ga. Southern warmed up by slamming the ball over the goal posts and then had their arse handed to them... kind of a App. State Michigan kinda game.

yeah, that Delaware game was a bad loss for probably 2 equally talented teams...too bad Delaware draws more fans to games than does Temple and who also beat the #1 and #4 ranked teams in 1-AA last year in the playoffs on the road before losing to App State in the title games. Oh, was this the same Delaware that had a 1st round NFl pick as a QB?

Let's see every team Navy played except maybe Northern Illinois has more talent than them right now. Navy had an average recruiting rank of 114. Teams like Temple, Air Force, Army, and Duke were 77th, 89th, 94th, and 69th.

I'm not ready to see Fulmer go anywhere, but I wonder why Will Muschamp's name hasn't been put in the mix for a head coaching job. His defenses at Auburn have always been incredible. I don't even really understand why the guy went to Texas to be a co-defensive coordinator. It was like a demotion except I'm sure it pays better.

IBleed: You think Texas is a step down from Auburn?

I bet that Flacco dude is going to be a bust. I'll admit I don't know much about him, but every time they show highlights of the guy, they show the same highlight of him throwing up a duck off of the wrong foot across his body late falling out of bounds. If he throws a bunch of passes like that one in the NFL he won't have a very long career.

When you lose 4 conference games in span of 5 years, that's called beating everybody in spite of losing by a FG to a 6-5 ETSU team in the mini-dome.

TJ-

I think going from a defensive coordinator to a co-defensive coordinator is a step down. I also think that Auburn could play with Texas any day. Well, maybe any day when they still had Will Muschamp there.

Workin, I hate to disagree w/ you on Johnson.(however I won't call you any names, lol)Although I think he is a good coach and motivator, he will have to change some of his offensive philosophy to compete in the ACC/SEC type conference. In that offense you can ill afford to fall behind by 10+ and come back.Young men want to be on ESPN highlight reels now a days and that offense is going to be tough to sell on big time athletes. Is he a better coach than CPF,maybe. But I don't think he would be succesfull at Tennessee for the reasons I stated above.CPF is still a good recruiter.I looked at the census for 07' and the only states less populated than Tenn that have programs that have been a sustained success the last 10 yr's are:

Wisconsin(very similar to UT)
Louisiana(gret recruiting base & borders Texas)
Oklahoma(Most of their guys come out of Texas)
Oregon(borders cali)

Scout rated our 05' class #1 Rivals #4
Scout rated our 07' class #4 Rivals #3
That's 2 top 5's in the last 4 yr's in a talent-lacking state.Do I think CPF is the best coach in the conference......No, but I think it would take more than Johnson to outdo CPF.

From a pure coaching standpoit ,here are my top 3 in the SEC:
1.Tommy Tuberville
2.Sylvester Croom
3.Mark Richt

Sorry abou the length.Slow day at the office.

Pretty good analysis, thesavageorange, but Mark Richt (like spurrier) has lost 3 out of the last 4 to Phil, and Croom hasn't had nearly enough success as a head coach to rank him so high.

His offenses broke 160 school records at Hawaii where they went to their first bowl game and won their first WAC title. He'll adapt to his personnel. RBs and OL will love that offense which will make it easier for a QB to be successful.

2 names I have thrown out before-

1. Doug Marrone, OC of the Saints (thank him for the 01 Florida win)
2. Jim Leavitt, South Florida

Workin - I for one like the idea.

spam247buster ,I can buy that. But the coaching rankings are merely opinion.I will tell you this if Richt doesn't get into the NC game in the next couple of yr's, and doesn't beat the Vols, the GA fan base will start to split just like Tennessee's has.Lord knows SEC fans think the
