Lofton reveals cancer battle

'I thought I was going to die'

University of Tennessee men's basketball star Chris Lofton didn't want to make any excuses for his slump the first half of this past season.

But cancer isn't an excuse - it's a reason.

The senior All-American guard told the News Sentinel on Thursday that he underwent four weeks of radiation treatment after being diagnosed with testicular cancer last March.

Tears came to his eyes when discussing his battle with cancer. Lofton said he has made a full recovery, but he acknowledged that last spring's treatment affected his offseason training regimen with the Vols. His statistics show it took him half the season to catch up.

"When I first heard that word, 'cancer,' I thought I was going to die," said Lofton, whose cancer was detected through an NCAA-mandated random drug test following the Vols' 121-86 victory over Long Beach State on March 16, 2007.

The results of the drug test were positive; UT officials were informed that if Lofton wasn't using drugs, the positive result could be a sign of cancer.

More tests followed, and Lofton underwent surgery on March 28 to have the cancer removed. Four weeks of radiation treatment followed, from late April into May.

"The radiation treatment was the toughest part,'' Lofton said. "I didn't feel like doing anything, I felt tired.

"When I played in the Rocky Top League (in June), it was the first time I picked up a ball since our (NCAA Sweet 16) loss to Ohio State."

Lofton put up 50 points in his first summer league game, but when he went to the Pan American Games tryouts later that month, his shots weren't falling so easily.

"I just wasn't myself,'' said Lofton, who failed to make the team.

Lofton's sluggishness carried over to the start of UT's season in November. He connected on just 1 of 8 shots - 0 of 5 from 3-point range - in the season-opening win over Temple.

Lofton, the 2006-07 SEC player of the year, managed only 5 points in the second game of the season, against lowly Arkansas-Monticello.

UT fans wondered aloud on talk-radio shows and Internet chat boards what had happened to Lofton.

Was it the Sports Illustrated cover jinx? Did he re-aggravate the ankle injury that sidelined him the season before? Or was Lofton reading too many of his preseason All-American press clippings?

UT head basketball trainer Chad Newman bristled each time he heard the critics.

"These people that are questioning Chris are going to feel pretty stupid when they find out what's wrong with him,'' Newman said early in the season.

Newman's comment prompted questions; coach Bruce Pearl, Newman and Lofton were all prodded for an explanation.

No one was saying anything.

There was a hint something could be wrong just prior to the start of the season, when Pearl confirmed that Lofton was seen at UT Medical Center in the offseason.

But Pearl would not disclose why Lofton was seen, saying at the time it was a 'personal' and 'sensitive'' issue that could embarrass the player.

"We were sitting on pins and needles all season long, hoping it would not get out,'' Pearl said. 'I was asked about it all the time, and I tried to be as honest as I could without revealing everything.

"It put a lot of wear and tear on Chris because he didn't want it out.''

Pearl said he respected Lofton all the more for his willingness to make his battle with cancer a private one.

"It says everything about Chris,'' Pearl said. "Chris is not about making excuses, and he didn't want his teammates to know and be worried about him.

"When people are first diagnosed with cancer, sometimes the first thought is to tell everyone close to you, so you can feel all the support and be surrounded with the love you need to battle cancer.

"But Chris didn't want anyone worrying about it or our fans using it as an excuse for him.''

Lofton said he appreciates his school and the media for respecting his privacy.

"I wanted to fight through it,'' Lofton explained. "There were times I wanted to say something, but I wanted my teammates to stay focused on the season.''

In the meantime, Lofton's early-season on-court struggles continued.

Lofton hit just 31.6 percent of his 3-point attempts through the first 16 games of the season before a Jan. 22 trip to Kentucky sparked his season.

The Vols lost to the Wildcats, 72-66, but Lofton started to win his psychological battle with cancer.

"I think what helped Chris overcome it psychologically was his competitiveness,'' Pearl said. "Chris had to know he was healthy and get the energy because he knew that without him, we were going to lose.''

When the former Kentucky Mr. Basketball from Mason County High School connected on half of his shots from the field and beyond the 3-point line against the Wildcats, it marked the first time he had done so in SEC play, and only the third time overall, all season.

Over the final 19 games of the regular season, starting with the Kentucky game, Lofton hit 64-of-129 attempts from beyond the 3-point arc, or 49.6 percent.

"I wanted to tell you earlier this season,'' Lofton told the News Sentinel. "Remember when you told me to look at that video of me from a year before? I knew I wasn't the same.

"I just felt like I couldn't get my body to move like I wanted it to.''

Lofton said it was the longest season of his life.

"I'm just glad it's over,'' said Lofton, who scored 23 points in a Portsmouth (Va.) Invitational game April 11. "I'm fine, feeling good, and ready to go.''

Lofton, at 6-foot-1, is considered a borderline NBA pick. Scouts like his shooting ability - he's the SEC's all-time leading 3-point shooter and ranks third in NCAA history - but many in the NBA believe his athleticism and size work against him.

After Thursday's revelation, it's safe to say Lofton's heart will never be questioned.

"You look at what he has gone through, and he's still going to be remembered as one of the best players to wear orange,'' Pearl said. "I was privileged to coach him. His jersey is going to hang in the rafters.''

Why does there need to be more details as they develop? I don't understand why there needs to be more details, as this is a private matter. Thanks for all you've done for UT Chris. Hope this problem doesn't re-occur.

Wow....sure does explain why he was off a little huh?...Im in Louisiana...and we are the biggest Vol fans you have ever seen...my 11 year old boy worships Chris Lofton...(and now seeing this...I couldnt be prouder of his choice)..God be with you Chris..and forgive us for chastising you this year....Its all clear now and all that counts is your healthy.....good luck in the NBA...you truly are the MAN...

Wow! What a special young man. Many of today's athletes of his caliber would have handled it differently, but not Chris. God bless you, you have my respect ... and prayers. May God be with you on each step of your walk through life. You are a Vol legend in your time. Be well young man, be well.

As a BTW, I hope all of you chumps that were trashing Chris this season are proud of yourself. My policy is simple -- trash the coaches, trash the administration, trash your fellow posters ... but ... never ... ever trash the young athletes that represent Our University on the field of play. Each one is giving there all for The University of Tennessee.

I would urge Chris to take this opportunity to help the many men, particularly young men, who will develop this cancer and not know until its too late. This is the cancer that almost killed Lance Armstrong. It is a very simple thing to check yourself as you are showering. I urge all men to check themselves (if necessary learn how from your Doctor) regularly. This is a Cancer which kills if not found early enough. God Bless you Chris for sharing this with the public. You have probably saved many lives.

Above are two stories about young men who faced health crises in their young lives - one survived, one did not. Kind of strikes hard on the forge of reality.

In the meantime us vain idiots get on here and flaunt our pride, egos, and anything else we care to flaunt -- and it means nothing. Considering the magnificance of life, our posts and comments on these boards are rather insignificant.

Fellow Vol fans, be well ... be well.

I realize Allan Houston and Dale Ellis are very deserving, and their day will come...but a big No. 5 better be hanging from the TBA rafters on Opening Night in November. That's coming from a recent testicular cancer survivor who underwent chemo at almost the exact same time that Chris did. What an inspiration. A true Tennessee legend. And there's no need for a true Tennessee legend to wait for his jersey to be retired. It should be up regardless of this...now even more so. Get it done, Hamilton.

I don't think that i have ever enjoyed watching someone play anymore than I enjoyed watching Lofton. His 3s to me were more exciting than circus dunks. Chris is the type of Athletic role model that we need more of. He was very respectful of the fans and his craft. He worked hard and always gave everything he had. He makes me proud to be a Vol fan. Hamilton needs to name Chris Lofton the First Recipent of the annual Chris Lofton Award. Given to the Vol or Lady Vol that overcame the most adversity to persevere in their quest to represent our University to the entire College Sports Nation.

I was just amazed at how deep Candace Parker must have had to dig to get thru the NCAA Tourney this year. Whatching her shoulder dislocate twice in one game was awful to watch, and a marvel to see her come back in the game. I'm sure Candace and many other players that have fought through injuries are awestruck by CHris Lofton's journey this last year.

Unreal how a great kid like Chris has this happen to him while the dirtbags of the world sail on by healthy as can be....

I'll never, ever understand it. It seems like the better a person is, the more likely they are to have bad sh(t happen to them. No, I'm not religiouoa, don't believe in any of that voodoo-wizard stuff; I guess maybe it's just because you notice and care more about the good people than the bad.

Chris was and is my all-time favorite UT bball player! Long before this Cancer news! So to all the "critics" in our fan base earlier this year, I say how's that taste in your mouth? How does that make you feel? Chris is a great person off the court and didn't deserve that crap anyway! To Maysville, your using the opinion of about 5 people in the whole UT fan base as an example for the whole fan base! Should I take the opinion of a few Wildcat fans (and you know the people I'm talking about) and say that's what the whole fan base is about? Bottom line is UT fans will always love Chris! He will always be a VOL and #5 will always be #1! Stay healthy Chris and good luck to you in the future no matter what it holds for you!

Lord have mercy, it's been a very long time since I've heard an inspiring story such as this.

Mr. and Mrs. Lofton: I have three kids my own, the oldest being 10. If I do half as good a job with them as you have with Chris, I'll die a satisfied father. I'd vote to retire no. 5 right now. What a Volunteer...

May God bless you and Chris.

Chris is very lucky that this showed up in the drug test that UT ran. The fact that he did radiation treatment indicates to me that the tumor was still completely within the testicle. Much more serious treatment is needed otherwise. Although Chris is a much younger man than I am, I am still amazed that he had the strength to play at all. In my fight I had to have my lymph nodes removed and then a year and a half later spent 20 days in the UT hospital under-going chemotherpy. The recovery takes a l...o...n...g time.
Good luck to Chris where ever your path leads.

CHRIS:: At UT medical center, get checkups with Dr. Waters (who I believe can walk on water) or Dr. Klien. Both are in the urology deptment and are on top of this type of cancer.

Best of luck Chris from a Memphis Tiger fan! I will admit that I'm glad we don't have to see him on the court again, because he absolutely killed us two years ago. Class act and I wish Lofton the best!

C'mon gents, retire the jersey when he would want it and when it should be retired.....

When the little blue visits Knoxville this year.

Chris is the epitome of what a college athlete should be, on and off the court. You never had to worry about CL getting in trouble at a club at 2 am, because he was getting up to be at the gym by 6. This guy is a role model and what you would want your own son to be like. I thought this before yesterday. The news of his ordeal just chiseled in stone his legacy as a true warrior and the ultimate team first guy. Chris is an inspiration to us all.

Chris, Thanks for all you did on and off the court. I hope my son grows to be half the man you are. God bless and good luck.

Each of you is absolutely correct. God bless Chris, he is truly amazing.

Just a thought: with more high profile recruits headed our way, I certainly hope that we continue to sign players with the same character as we have in the past. I dont want men's bball to produce incidents like we saw this offseason in football.

(I am not bashing our football players, just saying...)

Chris,
You'll always be remembered as a great Vol basketball player, but even a better man. Your story is truly inspiring and you are a role model for our youth. My son wear's your #5 jersey all the time. Bout time for a new one!! He's only 7 years old, but I'll tell him your story this evening. Good luck in your future & may God bless.

As an opposing fan I have always thought Loften was a special player. Now I also think he is a special person. God bless you Chris and may you have success in whatever you do in life. I think it should make all of us think twice the next time we start to criticize a 18-22 year old kid for something they are doing "wrong" on the court or field. Most of us were never as good as they are, but sure seem to know how "they" should do it.
Go Gators!!!

Chris Lofton's story ought to be a movie. I second all the laudatory comments. The first time I heard anything about testicular cancer, it was often lethal within two years of diagnosis. See: Pat Trammell (Bear Bryant's first QB, whose hometown of Scottsboro was also my mother's hometown.) If anyone is interested, it might be worth reading the Wikipedia article on Pat, who mentored Joe Willie Namath, and was in the process of becoming a dermatologist when he died tragically in 1968, two years following the diagnosis. It's amazing what progress we have made in treating testicular tumors since the late '60s. SAVol

Chris Lofton is a shining example of what it means to man up and get the job done. God bless him and his parents, who have done an absolutely fantastic job of raising this young man. What a stud.

Well, now I uderstand the "look" from Mama Lofton and Papa Lofton. As we got off the Marta in Atl for the SEC Tournament. Walking along, I asked Mama to hug their son, Chris, for all the Mamas and all the Papas that Love him. Not just for his Skills on the Court, but for his Honor, Integrity, Manners (acronym HIM - wonder where that Lofton faith comes from?). "Please hug him and thank him for all the examples he sets for young and old alike." (hasn't that proven True like None Other!) And, his Mama looked at me, deeply in the eyes, for a long moment, as if I might know something, too, about Chris'condition. I did Not, but the prayers have continued; the strain on his face was of great concern to another Mama and Papa who just knew something was Not Right with our Precious Chris. Prayers do get Answered and Honor does come in HIS time, not ours. To God be the Glory, Great Things He Has Done.
Blessings Lofton Family, Blessings !!

They can't retire his Jersey unless Mikey Mike changes the rules, and if he does that he darn well better retire No. 45 on the Football side.

Having gone through cancer surgery, radiation, et al I know how tiring, both physically and mentally, it can be. Kudos to C-Lo for persevering and maintaining a high level of performance through a trying time. When they talk about the "Right Stuff" in the movies this is the kind of person they are talking about. We'll miss you Chris!

I pray that this makes people think twice before they go blasting on here or anywhere about things that they obviously have no inside info on...which is pretty much everything.

I agree with the much earlier suggestion that Lofton's interview on ESPN.com is a must read...the whole thing.

Top five Volunteer men's basketball player of all time.In my opinion it goes Bernie,Houston,Ernie,Lofton and Dale Ellis.Chis didn't want us to know about his cancer, probably doesn't want us to talk to much about it.

There was only 1 Reggie White
There is only 1 Peyton Manning*
There is only 1 Chamique Holdsclaw
There's only 1 Tamiki Cathchings
There's only one Candace Parker
Add Chris Lofton to the short list of the few true STUDENT athletes that overcame adversity to rise above the crowd.
* Yes, Peyton was born with the silver spoon Manning pedrigree, but voluntering to sign over 250,000 autographs while @ UT and exceed the expectations puts him in this elite group.

DSa,
Seems like you're a joke too. You were saying there's was nothing wrong with Lofton most of the year. I'd say that debate has been settled now.

chainsaw, what an ugly comment. Shame on you. I'm deeply hurt once again. Just never know what to expect from you people. Now, get back to your tree trimming. I may have a job for you. I have a couple of large oaks in my yard that need trimming.
