Briarcrest tackle picks Georgia

MEMPHIS - Major Wright hasn't yet coached his first game at Briarcrest Christian, yet the former White Station football coach already has his first high-profile recruit at his new digs.

Austin Long, a 6-foot-5, 268-pound offensive tackle ranked No. 108 overall in the Class of 2009 by Rivals.com, said Wednesday he has committed to Georgia over a lengthy list of other Bowl Championship Series schools, including Alabama, Florida, Miami (Fla.), Michigan, Ole Miss and Tennessee.

"I committed Monday," Long said. "Coach (Stacy) Searels, the offensive line coach, and (Georgia offensive coordinator Mike) Bobo came and watched me lift weights.

"I mean, I knew I was going to commit ... So as soon as I left the school, they were still talking to coach Wright and my dad, and I called coach Searels and told him. Then I called (Georgia head coach) Mark Richt that night and told him. It was awesome."

Long, whose length and athleticism Wright describes as "similar" to that of Evangelical Christian School senior offensive tackle and Alabama signee Barrett Jones, said he'll make an official visit to Georgia this fall. He said he doesn't plan to visit any other school.

"At first, I was planning on (committing) early, then it picked up really quick, and I didn't think I was going to be able to do it," Long said. "I'd been thinking about it, and I was going to narrow it down to three this past weekend.

"But I felt really, really good about Georgia, and I didn't feel any need to keep it at three. I think if I know, then why not just go ahead and pull the trigger?"

Wright called Long "a player, and a good kid."

"He's just a good athlete for a lineman," Wright said. "He's long and athletic and finishes blocks real well. A lot of kids that size are a little bit passive maybe, but he's got what I guess you would call a mean streak. He's tough."

Too bad we missed out on this kid. Fulmer will get em next time.

I guess the coaches didn't tell him that Athens, GA ranks #1 nationally in gov't subsidized housing. Oh well, more motivation to beat the Dawgs!

True, Gen F, oh well. Our O-line should be fine for several years.

Good for him, go where you want to play and be happy with it... Overall he is just another offensive line person, there will be others.

This kid is a great prospect. Too bad UT didn't get him. OTOH, he had to have been pretty much UGA bound. I don't know how he could have looked at their depth chart and decided that would be the best place for him to go. Their OL two deep only has one Jr and no Srs this year. He'll be sitting a long time before he plays... if he ever plays.

Posted by sjt18 on May 2, 2008 at 1:56 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Yeah Silent... that makes sense. The kid should go to UGA because they went to a BCS bowl game last year in the hopes they'll do it again during his career... which is no more guaranteed than if he'd gone to UT. If they do, he can make the trip with them and see good games from the sidelines. Maybe he'll get a few snaps per game by the time he's a Jr.

Who cares who he is considering...Did any other schools offer this moron?

Posted by richvol on May 2, 2008 at 8:38 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Why is this school becoming a source for other SEC schools? We don't protect state lines as well as we once did it seems. Especially for the top prospects. The reciever that went to Southern Cal,Harrison Smith of Knoxville Catholic going to Notre Dame ,Barrett Jones to Alabama and there was another big lineman that chose LSU. It would seemingly be easier to get the instate five stars than chase all over the country for them. We need to lock down.

Adams was in this somehow. TUSCALOOSA JOHN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We raid other states and get their athletes.

Don't you think that their fans bemoan a kid coming to UT? We will never get all the kids in our state, neither will, GA, Al, or the others get all the kids from theirs.

It's wishful simplistic thinking to think all TN student athletes would sign with UT.

We need to get the best athletes, where ever they are.

SJT, I agree...this young man will probably won't see a lot of playing time over the next couple of seasons unless he blows the coaches away or there is an injury.

OTOH,most young men will look at a situation that is ripe for success. And, the national media (and I'm sure the coaches and players at GA) are hyping up the potential of their team over the next couple of years. I'm not surprised he picked GA given the nature of their program now and the potential for success they have.

UT I'm sure lends some uncertainty to recruits and their families with all of the changes in the coaching staff this year and a new QB under center. I think if the Vols have an amazing season, some of the uncertainty will diminish.

Does a young man that lives in Tennessee have some obligation to like or attend UT?There is a 4* WR out of Jacksonville who is a huge Gator fan. However, he is seriously considering Tennessee. Why?Because he is 6-foot-3, 208 lbs and feels he fits our system better.Kids go to out of state schools for different reasons.2/3 of our current roster is from out of state.

So it's an open and shut deal that the four-star wide receiver from Jacksonville, Fla., is headed across the state to Gainesville to play for Urban Meyer and the Gators, right? Well, not necessarily.

"I'm glad you asked that," Scruggs said Thursday night. "It's important that I fit. Florida usually has those small, really fast wide receivers catching balls underneath. I'm a tall receiver who goes vertical and likes to get his body between himself and the defender."

On Tennessee:"I definitely have real interest in them," Scruggs said. "They have great tradition at wide receiver and when I have called to talk to the coaches I have enjoyed visiting with them.

Ohhh....the doldrums.Sorry about the length.

I'd personally like to see John Adams line up on the offensive line. Now that would be funny.

This is why we can forget about another national championship anytime soon. You must be able to keep the best in state talent and we cannot. I don't know who's the blame, but with a school like UT it must be personal. I've been to Georgia and picking it over UT is like picking the projects over a Mansion.

Adams and McNeil are similar sizes, GF.

Posted by spam247buster on May 2, 2008 at 5:07 p.m. (Suggest removal)

6'5 268lbs ounds a little small for an SEC OT, but maybe they envision him growing into his frame quite a bit.

Posted by Beasty72 on May 2, 2008 at 5:50 p.m. (Suggest removal)

We beat Georgia head to head, won the SEC East and because of messed up BCS rules they get to go to a BCS game and our fans talk like they had a better season then us.This logic is completely messed up.

Well, ol' Richt has trouble when he sees orange, but the boy can recruit and stockpile. They're getting some sniffs at a preseason # 1 or # 2.

Posted by ETownVol on May 2, 2008 at 9:27 p.m. (Suggest removal)

OwensboroVol... in state talent? He may be a good player in TSSAA 4A or 5A divisions but if you compare high school talent from TN to top talent from GA, FLA, TX, etc. they don't come close. Granted there are some exceptions, but most top rated TN HS prospects would be slightly above average at big programs in GA, FLA, and TX. Tennessee isn't a talent laden football state when it comes to high school prospects. Besides this kid is from Memphis (which may as well be in Arkansas or Alabama) and is a bit undersized for an SEC OL. Good luck, Mr. Wright and have fun watching from the sidelines for 2-3 years. Now let's get Morgan Moses. That kid's a hoss.

This young man had some 14 offers...my son has played against him, and will again this fall. I personally don't see what all the fuss is about or why he's had so many offers. He plays in the large private school conference and his team had a dismal record last fall. He's going to have an eye-opening experience the first time he lines up with the big boys.

Posted by Tenn_Dawg on May 3, 2008 at 11:14 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I don't see size being a problem. The kid has yet to play his senior year so by the time he redshirts and spends a year or so in UGA's weight and conditioning program he will be a lean 300 lbs. I think they like his long arms, footwork and nasty disposition which are vital to playing tackle in the SEC. UGA will finally be getting to the position after this year where guys starting on the O-line will have been in the system for 2+ years learning and getting stronger before they are thrown out there. Which is the way it is suppose to work instead of having to start freshman like last year in this year. You never know how these guys will turn out. Hopefully he will meet the potential that the coaches see in him. UT, Bama, and UF were after him so there must be something they like. UT has certainty cherry picked its fair share of Georgia talent.

Posted by pdhuff on May 3, 2008 at 12:27 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Tenn Dawg - The key word in your post was "UT HAS certainly cherry picked", but not much since that brilliant coach Rodney G left.

Size can always be adjusted.

This is not the first time an in-state prospect has picked another school over Tennessee, and it will not be the last time either. We will recruit in other states, including Georgia, and bring in the great players. Georgia will not get all the great players they want from Georgia, so they will look elsewhere too. Tennessee has the talent level now and just must be coached to win more games and SEC trophies. Then the entire process will be a lot easier for us. I am not worried at all.
