Johnson adds Gatorade state award to her list

Lady Vol signee looking to defend track titles

Webb School basketball star Glory Johnson is busier than ever, even though the season is over.

Track season has started for Johnson, a University of Tennessee basketball signee. She has four Division II state track titles to defend - while also keeping her hoops game fine-tuned.

She was gassed after running the 200-meter dash 10 straight times during Tuesday's track practice.

"It was pretty tough," Johnson said Wednesday. "We just finished basketball and I took a week off after state and just had to start track (this week)."

Meanwhile, her basketball awards continue rolling in.

Johnson, a 6-foot-3 forward, was announced Wednesday as Gatorade's girls basketball player of the year in Tennessee for the second consecutive year. She also has been selected to the McDonald's All-America team and will play in the annual game March 26 game in Milwaukee.

Johnson was given a standing ovation by the upper school's student body Wednesday morning when the two awards were announced during chapel at Webb.

"I'm just really proud of Glory and all she's accomplished and helped this basketball program to accomplish," Webb coach Shelley Collier said. "You don't get the opportunity to coach a special talent like that every day.

"What I'm most proud of is how she's grown as a person, watching her from her freshman year and now to her senior year and the way she's handled herself both in success and then sometimes, like in the state tournament (title game) the way we end up losing by two."

Johnson, averaging 19.1 points, led the Lady Spartans to the Division II state title in 2007 and a runner-up finish this year. She won individual state track titles last year in the long jump and 200 meters and was a member of two state-title relay teams.

Johnson says Lady Vols basketball coach Pat Summit has not objected to her running track.

"She knows it's something I like to do and I enjoy doing, so she doesn't have any objection toward it," Johnson said. "But I don't know of any other (UT) recruits running track, so I think just for myself, it's me trying to keep in shape with friends and the people I've run with in the past."

Johnson plans to enroll for UT's first session of summer school in June while starting individual workouts with Lady Vols teammates.

"I plan to do both sessions (of summer school) just to get as much schooling as I can," Johnson said. "I live here and school's not a problem for me. I like doing it anyway, so I might as well go ahead and get a head start. . . .

"I can't wait to start (basketball) whenever I get to summer school. I'll start conditioning with whoever is there, whoever can make me better."

Sounds like she is going to be a great recruit.

I watched her run at the State last year. There was nobody that was even close to her. She can absolutely fly. She would have won a fifth, but I believe a teammate stepped out the lane and they were DQ. If track did not conflict with Basketball at TN, she would be a star in it as well. I was surprised to see that she is going to run because earlier in the year she announced that she would not.

I wonder if Geno offered her an ESPN tour.
