Adams: Will UT alter tournament history?

The Florida Gators have won back-to-back national championships in basketball. They also have won back-to-back SEC tournaments.

That's not an aberration.

Although the SEC tournament has no direct bearing on the NCAA tournament, the conference's best teams often do well in both. That's why I expect Tennessee to be playing for the SEC tournament championship Sunday.

Never mind UT's abysmal history in the SEC tournament. This is its best team - one worthy of a No. 1 NCAA tournament seed and quite capable of playing in the Final Four.

And the SEC tournament should reflect that.

Sure, there are exceptions. For example, take Florida in 2000. After being eliminated in the second round of the SEC tournament, the Gators made it to the national championship game as a fifth seed.

But since the conference expanded to 12 teams in 1992, Florida in 2000 is the only team to make the Final Four after failing to advance at least to the semifinals of the SEC tournament.

The last two Florida national championship teams aren't the only ones to build momentum in the SEC tournament and sustain it all the way to a national title.

Kentucky's 1998 national champions did the same. They won three SEC tournament games by an average of 22 points before winning six consecutive games in the NCAA tournament.

The Wildcats also won the national title in 1996 - after losing in the championship game of the SEC tournament. Mississippi State, which won the SEC tournament, then made an NCAA tournament run of its own, reaching the Final Four semifinals.

Since 1992, Arkansas is the only one of the five SEC national champions that didn't at least play for the SEC tournament championship. In 1994, the Razorbacks lost to Kentucky in the SEC tournament semifinals before making their national championship charge.

Kentucky's 1992 and 1993 teams fell short of a national title, but their play further illustrates the correlation between the two tournaments.

The 1992 Wildcats won three SEC tournament games by an average of 17 points. They then won three consecutive NCAA tournament games before losing to Duke 104-103 in overtime in the East Regional final.

The 1993 Wildcats won three SEC tournament games by an average of 29.7 points - an average somewhat skewed by a 101-40 victory over UT - before their dazzling NCAA tournament performance.

Kentucky won its first four NCAA tournament games by an average of 31 points before losing to Michigan in overtime in the semifinals.

Since UT has had such a small basketball presence in March, you can't prove much by its tournament comparisons.

The Vols haven't won the SEC tournament since 1979. And they never have advanced beyond the sweet 16 round of the NCAA tournament.

Even their best teams have stumbled in the SEC tournament. Coach Jerry Green's 1999-2000 team won 26 games but lost its SEC tournament opener.

Coach Bruce Pearl's first UT team was good enough to merit a No. 2 seed for the NCAA tournament, yet it lost its first game in the SEC tournament. Wichita State upset the Vols in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

In three seasons, coach Bruce Pearl has dramatically altered the course of UT basketball. The Vols have been ranked No. 1 in the country for the first time in school history, they have won the SEC regular-season title, and they're on the verge of earning their first No. 1 seed in an NCAA tournament.

Now, it's time to change their tournament history. And that starts Friday with the SEC tournament in Atlanta.

This just goes to show you, once you get the spotlight, you'd better turn it on!! Life's a stage and we are but actors. So what makes us different from you , John? Winning, that's what!! And this article is just another indication of it.

I just don't understand why they have to play the thing in the stupid Georgia Dome. I understand it's more seats and more money, but every other conference plays in a traditional arena. I am glad to see they've committed to play it outside of Atlanta a little bit more in the future, with one in Tampa, New Orleans, and another one in Nashville coming up in the next few years. I'd like to see one in Memphis, but that won't happen until Conference USA decides to play elsewhere.

Funny how since the Adams/Fulmer articles there hasn't been any news out of Knoxville of football players getting in trouble with the law. I hope that continues.

Go Vols win the SECT and make it to the Final Four!

If we are going to win the SEC tournament, I want to do it the hard way. That is by beating LSU, Vandy, and Kentucky. These are the teams we will likely face. I hope we face them b/c they give us our best chance of losing. If we can get through that gauntlet, we'll be ready for Indianapolis!!

YAWN another tread-lightly article, like the one on SEC non-conference football schedules.

Don't run from your opinions, John. Do an article on why Fulmer needs to be fired but not Saban or Paterno or Croom.

Orangefever - That's certainly a classy post! Calling someone an idiot for getting the city wrong?? Really, does that make him and idiot or did it just make you feel better about your own pathetic state?

Conference tournaments are a waste of time and energy. But, they make big money for the conferences so we'll never get rid of them.

I would be interested to see how our road wins over quality opponents compares to UCLA and UNC.

Consider Memphis, Gonzaga, Xavier, Florida (yeah, but they're still Florida).

I really think this team has proven they can win on the road. That bodes well for a run deep in the tourney. For what it's worth, one of my biggest fears is getting in Texas' bracket.

More pathetic bashing of John Adams from the whiners--keep it up morons--great idea to kill the messenger. At least Adams had the guts to tell the truth. I guess that bothers you whining weenies who choose to keep your heads in the sand.

dfreeman: I'm pretty sure it's the latter.

Good article. Good frame of reference for what's happened to good teams in the past. I haven't been a fan of the SECT for obvious reasons. Hope we can leave a mark this year.

Note to Adams bashers: Just keep gnawing at that elbow and eventually your arm will fall off.

People, this guy an editor at a newspaper, not an employee for UT sports information. Editors sometimes write editorials that readers don't agree with. If he would've written a "Stay the Course" column about UT football, there would've been just as much, if not more, outrage from the same people who hate him for calling out Fulmer. I don't agree with Adams all of the time, but when I disagree with him, that just means he's doing his job.

If you want sugar-coated UT stuff 24/7, then go to utsports.com.

Posted by etsuvol99 on March 11, 2008 at 9:10 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Adams hasn't told any truths, he just wrote an opinion down. And that opinion was that Fulmer should not be Tennessee's football coach because some kids got in trouble for drinking. Like it or not, it happens at every school.

alfrizzle, actually Indianapolis = Final 4 two years ago. Last year we won it in Atlanta...but thanks for trying.

Posted by King30 on March 11, 2008 at 9:25 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Guys (and Gals), we're not just playing for A number one seed, we're playing for THE number one seed. NC can get upset in the ACCT and it may not matter what Memphis, UCLA, or Kansas does.
Pearl's right. WE would be deserving of the number 1 overall seed (and close to home first round venue) having beaten Memphis on their court and having a stronger RPI and SOS than any of the three.
Think we've got something to play for?
Bring on LSU and Vandy...they're in for a Big Orange beatdown.

Posted by shipperman on March 11, 2008 at 9:32 a.m. (Suggest removal)

etsuvol99, Adams is saying what a lot of us are thinking, if Fulmer cannot discipline his players properly, run him outta town. True he cannot help that they get in trouble, but He can do more to assure that others do not want to repeat the bad behavior

Posted by Hunter on March 11, 2008 at 9:50 a.m. (Suggest removal)

If recent NCAA history is any indication, we'll play in the Charlotte regional as the #1 overall (assuming UNC drops in the ACC Tourney) and Duke will be the #2, giving them an extreme home court advantage. NCAA logic!

Posted by chkrbrd on March 11, 2008 at 9:57 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I like our chances against Duke more than Carolina, because Duke has less inside the paint.

Posted by brownsvillevol on March 11, 2008 at 10:18 a.m. (Suggest removal)

if we win the sect we WILL be the overall #1 seed. if we lose we will be either the 4th #1 seed or the 1st #2 seed.

Posted by BOASoldier on March 11, 2008 at 10:32 a.m. (Suggest removal)

John Adams had a right to write the column about firing Fulmer. He stated his opinion as fact... he has that right ... there is no legal action that can be taken against him for that. A lot of people do not like him for the opinion he expressed... a lot of people do not like him because he is writing for a Knoxville paper and chose to do interviews in other states putting the Vols HC down. It is one thing to criticize within the "family" but taking it outside the family and making it seem to everyone that your "opinions" are facts is completely ethically wrong. Look around the SEC Florida has horrible problems with their atheletes past and present, SC, AL, GA, pick one and anyone can find a host of off the field issues. Write a column about college football in its intirety, but to single out one coach and call for his head in his home town will bring about a deserved scrutiny. So it is perfectly fair for anyone to ask for John's head. He did it out of opinion why shouldn't we?

Posted by pdhuff on March 11, 2008 at 10:58 a.m. (Suggest removal)

BOAsoldier - good post - You do have that right and you just did. He's just trying to get up to Finebaum's level.

Posted by BADGES0413 on March 11, 2008 at 11:27 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I must admit I like some of Adams articles but did not agree with most of the Fulmer article. Bringing up what Leonard Little did after he left UT was pointless. I do ask one thing of the KNS, can you please leave out his pointless picks in Friday's paper during football season. I don't care if his cat picks Miss State to beat Vandy in week 5. Maybe a story on one of the current players or coaches can be put on page 2 of the sports section.

Posted by NCC1701 on March 11, 2008 at 11:31 a.m. (Suggest removal)

John Adams can say or type whatever he wants. So can we. I say Adams is a smug little jerk. When he is on that radio show with Dave Hooker he sounds like a know-it-all dork. He tries to be funny--and he fails. It took very little "guts" to write what he did. He is just trying to sell papers. He'll never look a real man like Fulmer in the eye. All of you who support him so much must ask yourself why you champion somebody who observes and comments for a living over a man who actually coaches the friggin team.

Posted by 55Vol on March 11, 2008 at 11:53 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Adams was unprofessional by including the NFL stats in his article. It is clear from that article he has a personal vendetta against Fulmer. Why would you include the actions of grown men who have moved on? If he had not included those issues, the article would stood on it's own merit. Going to Finebaum's show to spout off shows the personal vendetta he has.

After that fiasco, he is irrelevant.

In the second round, when UT plays LSu, Adams will be pulling for the corndogs. I'm sure your opinions will go over better down there, John.

John Adams - we all know you want TN to lose in this tournament...so whay not just come out and say it? Why write the article with a bunch of open-ended questions when we all know where your heart and loyalty really lies?

Truth be told - I didn't really read the article...just quickly scanned it because JA is a complete idiot and classless.

they play the tourney in the georgia dome to help acclamate the SEC to the tourney. if and when you get to the final four, you will play in a similar dome situation. it is a good experience for the players to get used to that kind of setting.

I'll tell you, it appears based on recent posts since the infamous "Fulmer Article" that John Adams is far from winning any writer of the year awards from any Knoxville natives.

Poor John, sure going out to dinner in Knoxville isn't quite what it used to be.

From vol88: "I don't agree with Adams all of the time, but when I disagree with him, that just means he's doing his job."

Amen to that. My goodness, it sickens me how many Vols fans believe, or at least imply, that News-Sentinel writers should tow the UT party line. And Heaven forbid if they don't.

The vitriol sent in the direction of John Adams is utterly laughable. Like vol88, I don't always agree with John -- but that's why I love his writing. He will not be a shill for Tennessee, suck up to any of the coaches in any sport and portray the football program, in particular, as something running tantamount to purity and goodness.

Go read some articles from sportswriters in Los Angeles that cover SC and UCLA and see how they treat the Trojans and the Bruins; read Chicago writers and how they've destroyed the Bears after their collapse in the free agent market; and read New York writers any day of the year about St. Johns, Rutgers or any pro team in the metro.

All of the above writers make John Adams articles seem like travelogues for Disneyworld.
