Tatum is proving his points in summer league

Tennessee redshirt freshman Cameron Tatum has waited a long time to shine in Knoxville, and it's showing each time he takes the floor this summer.

Tatum scored 43 points to lead First Tennessee to a 95-93 win over Ray's ESG on Monday in the Pilot Rocky Top League.

Tatum's dunks, passes and defense were impressive against incoming UT recruits Scotty Hopson and Bobby Maze at Bearden High School, but the most obvious element of the 6-foot-6 wing's game is hunger.

Tatum, sounding much like an unheralded heavyweight boxer, makes no secret of his desire to earn the respect of Vols' fans.

"I want to show something out here," said Tatum, who leads the league in scoring at 41.3 points per game. "I don't know if people here believe in me yet."

UT coach Bruce Pearl does, and he did last season even though Tatum took a redshirt.

"I had so much confidence in Cameron that during the course of last year we discussed the possibility of redshirting Chris (Lofton) or JaJuan (Smith)," Pearl said. "Chris was injured, and JaJuan, there was the possibility for him to play a year not in Chris' shadow.

"But then JaJuan and Chris wanted to play, and Cameron got injured prior to having played too many games to redshirt."

The UT coaches came to Tatum after the South Carolina game and told him they felt it best if he redshirt.

Tatum spent the rest of the season on the bench. He underwent arthroscopic knee surgery.

"Sitting out last year was the hardest thing I've ever had to do,'' he said. "I knew I was capable, but I had to use it as a learning experience and watch and learn from the older guys.

"I'm ready, right now.''

Pearl said the time is right for Tatum to step up.

"We lost 60 percent of our scoring and 95 percent of our 3 points with Chris, JaJuan and Jordan leaving," Pearl said. "So now at the two and the three, you have Cameron, Scotty, J.P. Prince, Josh Tabb and Renaldo Woolridge coming in.

"The most competition on the team is there on the wings."

Pearl said the talent is there, but not necessarily the experience.

"Even with all that length and talent, we'll miss the experience we had with Chris and JaJuan," Pearl said. "Another big thing is defense. All of those guys can score, but who's going to guard?"

Tatum made a statement Monday night, harassing Hopson into 9-of-22 shooting for 22 points.

"Cameron's body has changed tremendously,'' Pearl said. "His skill level has improved, the way he takes the ball to contact and just his mentality. He's had to wait two years for this.''

The guy is a bonafide star waiting to happen. I predict Cameron Tatum will lead the team in scoring this year. He will also catapult the True Basketball Team into the elite 8 if not the final 4. Sorry kenlucky you guys will have to wait till all those elementary school kids you have offered scholarships to get potty trained. ha ha

You probably won't be hearing Pearl complaining about this team being "wet behind the ears" although he could.

my goodness his performance thus far on both sides of the ball are incredible! i heard that he was good but this is just amazing (even if the league is just a step up from a pick up game). i cant wait to see him on tv this year!

btw, if he's this good, what's our starting 5 gonna be?:
1: maze
2: hopson
3: tatum / prince
4: t. smith
5: chism (by unfortunate default)

consider the subs. our 2nd rotation could beat half of DI!
1: west
2: tabb
3: (tatum/prince nonstarter) wooldridge
4: negedu / childress
5: jurick / williams

Don't write-off Kentucky just yet. I believe that they have a state law that reads if a child can dribble and play d, he can skip high school and go straight to uk.

Why in the world would anyone list Jurick ahead of B Williams? Jurick is a huge project, and will most likely turn out like Matthew Dotson, Scott Moore, or Boomer Herndon. I can't imagine a situation in which he doesn't redshirt. We aren't going to have a 12 man rotation. I would have to believe that this would be our rotation.

PG Maze and West
Wings Hopson, Prince, Tatum, Tabb
Post Tyler, Chism, Childress, Williams.

Mop up minutes for Pearl

Redshirt for Woolridge and Jurick.

Tatum was lighting it up tonight, Maze finally put some impressive D on Tatum and stopped him. Hopson was disappointing....

He can dunk! Wow is he like the second person in Rocky Top history to do that? Bet the highlights will be all over WATE tonight! I heard he even did it one handed.

darb-
There's a good chance Tatum beats out either Prince or Hopson for a starting spot. He's physically stronger than both and if that translates to defense then the decision is easy.

Posted by VolPride_13 on June 23, 2008 at 11:26 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Cameron has better defense than J.P. and has a better outside shot than J.P. soooo...I think Cameron might beat him out of a starting spot!!

I am thankful that Cameron is playing for UT. Go Vols!

What is up with you two people thinking Woolridge will redshirt in favor of giving Childress minutes? What is the rationale behijd that? Just because you haven't seen Renaldo play yet?

If Renaldo redshirts, I'll wear a Kentucky t-shirt to every home game.

Posted by UTVols1698 on June 24, 2008 at 2:10 a.m. (Suggest removal)

smallmike4pres... talkin about dunking and saying he even did it with one hand? its easier to dunk 1 handed, you have to get up higher to dunk with 2 hands, nice try. And Renaldo Woolridge better not redshirt, he can play so he should, part of Tennessee's strength is how many guys can play quality minutes while pressing and wearing the other team down, at the end of games Tennessee is fresh while the opposing team is $uckin wind

Posted by DandyVol on June 24, 2008 at 6:57 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Does anyone know? -- In the Rocky Top League, are they using the new 3 pt distance or are they still using last season's distance? I don't see how JP can possibly be a starter this coming season. He has too many areas he has to improve in and still get through his shoulder rehab. Tatem looked good before his injury last season and is now showing his rehab went well and his game has gone a step up. I pick Tatem to be a starter. Go Vols.

A couple of guys are going to have to redshirt or there is going to be a problem with getting everybody enough minutes. It's a great problem to have but it's definitely something Coach Pearl is going to have to solve or there could be some really talented players that are unhappy. It appears that Tabb and Tatum can play with anyone and have certainly waited their turn. If Prince improves from last season and Hopson is the real deal it's 40 minutes split 4 ways.Chism is very talented too but he needs to step up and play like it for every game. He should be taking on a leadership role this year...not pouting. How has he responded since walking out in the 2nd game?

Posted by Hoss44 on June 24, 2008 at 8:12 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Pearl also laughed when Brent Watts selected Tatum in the 1st round, and said that he is not at 1st rounder.

Posted by b_neas on June 24, 2008 at 8:26 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Tatum will beat out prince for the starting job. Prince is better off the bench anyway because he can sub for the 2, 3, or maybe even 4 position for quality minutes. Tatum defends as good as JP and is three times the scoring threat. Tatum is going to be a special player, i would say two years and he will be gone.

Posted by marc_ash on June 24, 2008 at 8:31 a.m. (Suggest removal)

A lot of folks have their opinions of the starting 5 and reserve rolls. A lot of things will play out between now and the beginning of the season. Some young players will continue to step it up, injuries will occur and unfortunate circumstances will occur that will effect the team. It's fun to hypothesize, but a long way from seeing what will be for sure this season...but at least we have the luxury to have more than just 1 or 2 options as was the case in recent years.

Posted by Hoss44 on June 24, 2008 at 8:52 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Tatum's game is made for this league, and for Pearl's system. He can do it all on the offensive end, and can lock people down defensively. He's going to explode for a huge year!!!

Posted by TommyJack on June 24, 2008 at 9:07 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Do they make any attempt to play D in this league? Serious question.

Posted by b_neas on June 24, 2008 at 9:12 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Not sure how it will work out, but i would love for the starting 5 to be:

PG - Maze - sub West
SG - Hopson - sub Prince/Tabb
SF - Tatum - sub Prince/Nege/Woolridge(may red shirt)
PF - Tyler - sub Nege/Woolridge/Chism
C - Chism - sub Williams/Jurick(may red shirt)

mop up time - Pearl and Childress (sorry Ryan if you could play like you did when your soph season was winding down you could get major PT but i did not see that player all last year)

Big Child had injuries last year and unfortunately has had injuries this year as well.

To comment on an earlier post about why would Woolridge redshirt, it's because he's a freshman and upperclassmen who've proven it are given the benefit of the doubt.

JP Prince brings a lot of intangibles to the table, which is why I think he will start over Tatum. I do, however, think that Tatum will get major run this year. He and Negedu will be the first two off the bench.

I am skeptical of West getting a ton of minutes, but he will play. Tabb will be in a similar situation.

I don't know that Jurick will redshirt to start the season, because of the desire to get Tyler Smith some time at the 3 spot. That means putting in some combination of Williams/Negedu/Chism. With Childress hurt, Coach Pearl might want to put in a true big at the five spot and have Williams and Jurick split the time. That decision will probably be made early in the season which is why those first few games will be so important.

If I had to guess now:

1 - Maze
2 - Hopson
3 - Prince
4 - Tyler
5 - Chism

First off the bench: Tatum, Negedu

Redshirt: Woolridge, Childress

Stat Stuffer: Tyler Smith

Assists: Maze

Points: Hopson

Rebounds: Chism

PPG: 81.7

b_neas pretty much has the lineup pegged. I don't see Jurick getting much time once the SEC season has started.

Note that there are 13 guys listed in his lineup. Add Childress to that and you have 14 guys capable of playing. Childress can hit the three and has really changed his body to play the 3 position. I wouldn't be suprised at all if Negedu, Woolridge, and Jurick all red shirt. That would give you an 11 man rotation. That doesn't mean they won't get some PT at the beginning of the year. Minutes will be earned. I like JP, and he has some real up side. He may not end up seeing the court unless he has improved his shot markedly.

If Tabb has gained a little offensive confidence, he could be one of those guys who gets you 10 points every night and keeps the other team from getting 15 to 20 that they would have gotten with someone else in. 30 point swing? Sounds good.

How many games/minutes can you play before redshirting?

Posted by UT_LAW_2011 on June 24, 2008 at 10:23 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Just to clarify something, misspelled Childress nickname Big Chill and instead put Big Child because my brain could decide whether to put in the last name or the nickname and it compromised independently of my consciousness. I wasn't ripping him. He is genuinely injured.

REdshirt:
-Woolridge, Jurick

B_neas,

In his defense, the guy was asked to play point guard in the NCAA's for the first time all season against a Butler team that cleaned our clocks in the Garden the year before and had won 30 games this year. Just speaks to how stacked the East Bracket was, for which the committee should be faulted, because the West was not near as good.

That said, Prince actually played 38 good minutes at the point. Those last two, hey I'm with ya, but given the circumstances he was more good than bad there.

And there's no denying how good he was against Xavier and Memphis.

VolGraduate, the difference is that Pearl won't be using this as an excuse when we lose a game and then after the season use it as his "Perfect Storm" justification for a below average season. Also, Pearl can legitimately say that we are wet behind the ears. Foolmore says it every year. Geek.

Posted by ButchIsBack on June 24, 2008 at 12:05 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Get this straight, Prince is not in the same league as Tatum and Hopson. That simple. Prince is seriously limited. That being said, Maze is the most important guy over there. West is not ready and will not be ready this year. Unfortunatly the 8-10 back up PG minutes go to Prince. Woolridge redshirt? Who knows. Nobody has seen the kid play. Here is the prediction. Negadeu plays more than you think. He can give you 20 monster minutes at the 4 and 5. Finally, get of Chism. He will be a 1st round draft pick. UT would be hurting without him. Williams is looking good.

Workin- If Pearl could keep his recruits in school and get more from the ones that have stayed he would not be wet behind the ears.

Childress - deadweight
Passley - gone (Wacky Tobakky)

Johnson - homesick
Crews - gone (Panama Red)
Ramar - gone (Columbian Gold)
Tabb - Mop Up Player
Chism - had good game against Vandy.

Tatum- could be great
Williams - played good for a Frehman

This years class- could be the best ever.

I like Coach Pearl/UT basketball and Coach Fulmer/ UT Football, just goes to show how tough recruiting and keeping players is for both sports.

Posted by Volumnus on June 24, 2008 at 12:10 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Tatum has something to prove, he is working hard, he deserves his shot. Having watched the dynamic duo of Maze and Hopson, I am not sure that they can stand the defensive heat and are unselfish enough to know when to pass the ball. I think West and Tatum may be on the floor more in the SEC. Pearl is a wizard, but he will need to be to manage these egos and get this group to be a team. I think Coach Pearl will earn his money this year, and maybe again next year if Maze and Hopson are "one and done."

Chidress was Pearl's first recruit and Passley was a Transfer that Pearl brought in. I know Chism had better games and I also know if Tabb could get a jumper he could start for any SEC team. I also really like Pearl and this recriting class.

My point was to an idividual that made a comment about our football coach on a basketball site which is what he lives for. I was just trying to point out that all coaches have trouble keeping recruits in this day and age. I try to post logical thoughts but sometimes my emotions get the best of me.

And besides all this crap as the Great Gil Soctt Herron said, "Whitey is Still on the Moon and there is not a lot I can do about it."

If you went over to a Carolina (Dean Smith), Kansas (Phog Allen), Kentucky (Adolph Racist Rupp), or UCLA (John Wooden) board, people would laugh at you for making fun of Tennessee for not making it past the sweet sixteen, because you haven't brought home any hardware in your illustrious basketball history either. Most of them would wonder if Memphis played basketball outside of the last three years!

Saw an article on ESPN that indicated Rose might not be that good in the NBA. Something about PER. Not that the opinion of a journalist means anything. Just commenting. What are Rose's strengths anyway? I didn't watch much of Memphis last year, but I got the impression that he isn't that great of a shooter. He at least couldn't shoot UT out of the zone. I haven't heard about how he is a dynamic slasher or passer. The impression I have is that he is just a good ball handler with otherwise decent skills. I may be wrong. I understand that he is a good player. I just have to wonder if he has been overhyped because he is a part of this supposedly spectacular draft class.

Anyone in the know would classify UT a top 15 program in the past 3 years (Pearl's tenure). I would dare to say that 75% to 80% would put them in the top 10 programs during the last 3 years. Of course memphis is in there too, but you are reaching with you non fact based arguements.

As far as the ‘08-’09 roster is concerned…Negedu isn’t even on it yet.
Steve Pearl isn’t on the roster either. What’s up with that?

Childress is our only Senior.
Chism, Maze, Prince, Smith and Tabb are the Junior class.
Williams and Pearl are the only Sophomores.
Tatum is a Redshirt Freshman.
Then we have a True Freshman class of Hopson, Jurick, Negedu, West and Woolridge.
Seniors and Sophomores are pretty thin.

From a standpoint of numbers versus minutes you can figure the sixth man at 20 mpg, seventh man at 18 mpg, eight man at 15 mpg and the ninth man at 10 mpg. So only 9 guys are going to get appreciable minutes and that leaves five getting splinters in their butts. At least three need to redshirt!

I live in New York...you know...the biggest and best city in our country.

As that blog states, you can keep beating us all you want and keep peaking in February and losing in March...but you are the only fans in the world who consider that a great thing. Memphis fans love watching you CONTINUALLY not make it past the sweet sixteen even if you do beat us sometimes...MARCH IS ALL THAT MATTERS!

Surely you jest. Memphistenn has been beaten to death in every article he's appeared on and he still keeps coming back for more. Definitely some masochistic tendencies. But they're kinky like that in NYC so what do you expect.

Remember this. BP has this program much farther along in three years than Cal had Memphis in the same time frame. (Can you say perennial NIT?) And that's what scares you. This program is coming and there is nothing you can do about it. Give him the same time period you gave Calipari (eight years) and let's see how it stands. Seems to me that would be the fair way to do it.

By the way kid, Cal still has those time outs left in his pocket. Call him up. Looks to me like you could use one.

It doesn't even matter...North Carolina is far and away the best team in 09. They will win the national title with ease...so its silly to even talk about next year.

Posted by UT_LAW_2011 on June 25, 2008 at 10:39 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Right. Why even bother to play the season?

UNC was supposed to win last season. They won right? Oh wait, Kansas did. You probably remember that.

And UCONN was supposed to win in 2005. Wait, Florida did? Oh right. George Mason beat UCONN and they didn't even make the Final Four.

I could keep on going, but this post would be way too long.

UNC is the reason its silly to even talk about next year? Maybe, in fact, the other teams in Division I should bother to lace them up this year. Just in case.

Posted by memphistenn2117 on June 25, 2008 at 10:50 a.m. (Suggest removal)

North Carolina returns all their starters unlike the year before. Nobody has the talent they do 1-9. It is not even close. Last year, the four teams all year that everbody went back and forth on was Memphis, UCLA, UNC and Kansas. And, it turned out it was the best final four in all the years of the tournament because the 4 best teams made it their, all four #1 seeds for the first time ever. True, people thought UNC was the best of the four, but those four fluctuated being called "the best team" from about mid-season all the way until the end. It was the first year where their was also no chance of an "upset" in the final four as all of them would have deserved winning it. Kansas might have won, but that does not mean they were the best team. One game doesn't decide who the best team is as I hope you know. A 7 game series is a great way to tell, but unforutnately, the college basketball season cannot go on as long as the NBA playoffs. Kansas just happened to be the one's who won on April 7th. It was not a blowout or anything. It was a great game and Memphis gave the game away, no doubt. I think we can all agree if Memphis and Tennessee played 7 times, it would most likely be 4-3 Tennessee or 4-3 Memphis. One game just decides who won THAT night.

Memphistenn2117

Thank you for making my point.

"Kansas might have won, but that does not mean they were the best team. One game doesn't decide who the best team is as I hope you know."

Yes, in fact I do know.

That is exactly why, despite how good UNC looks on paper, that does not matter. What does matter is where they're seeded, what matchups they get in the bracket, and who gets hot at the right time.

Nothing is guaranteed. Which is why no one "wins the national title with ease" and why no one should make any plans to sit next season out.

NYC the best city in America? That is very funny.

I know he wants to play here. I did hear that cdr's stock was going down also. Said he was not doing so well in the workouts and was getting outplayed. I don't know but I think whoever gets him has hit the jackpot. Without him the tigers would have never gotten where they got. I know NBA is a lot diff but I think he can contribute big time. agree on cdr he's a steal for any gm at the 17 or above. cardinal was good player in his prime and he is good guy but almost eveyone in the org. knows he's overpayed. they been trying to deal himout for the last two years. don't get me wrong rudy gay is going to be a superstar i just wish we wouldn't have given up battier(our glue guy)to get stro back. yesterday my brother and i watched espn's top 10 nba flops in that order and we were very surprised not to see stro at #2. instead it was darko.lol! as for beasley vs. mayo i think wallace is flipping a coin. both have an upside but most beleive mayo will be the superstar.

Attention all Vol fans. The NBA draft is tonight. I'm sure you will all want to tune in to see if Derrick Rose will be chosen first or second in the draft. Good article in today CA:

http://www.commercialappeal.com/news/...

If the Vol program continues to come along, who knows one day you may reach a level like this where NBA teams are all trying to get one of your star players. In the meantime you still have us (big brother) over here in Memphis to idolize. You know, a goal to set that one day the vol program can reach the level that our program is at. In the meantime there's football and Lady Vols so the news isn't all bad.

Posted by UT_LAW_2011 on June 26, 2008 at 11:18 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I'm happy for Mr. Rose. He was a truly great player. I do think that success in the pros does yield to a slight elevation in a college hoops program, but those numbers pale in comparison to other facts.

Those key facts in evaluating a rivalry are:

1) Head to head play

2) Quality seasons
A) Post Season Accomplishment
B) Wins over top competition
C) Wins in a season

3) Recruiting successes (because all rivalries are about the future as much as the present and much more so than the past)

4) National Recognition
A) AP and ESPN Polls
B) NBA draft picks
C) Famous Coaches

We are winning:
1
2B
4C

You are winning:
2A
4A
4B
2C

We are Too Close To Call:
3

Now on the list of things I aspire for us to move forward in, certainly our players having success in the pros is one of them. But most Memphis posters pump their chests way more than is necessary for this part of the rivalry (you usually with a hint of irony but most lack your skills).

By the way, another reason I'm happy for Mr. Rose tonight is that we don't have to see him next year. We won the game, but man that kid played great.

Posted by overatedvols on June 26, 2008 at 12:40 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Hello UT_LAW, good post. I can agree with the Vols getting your number 1, but 2B, and 4C?
2b, wins over top competition. You should go back and look at our schedule last year. Yes, we're in conf. usa but we had an incredible out of conference schedule last year. We beat USC, Georgetown, Ariz. Gonzaga, Oklahoma, UConn. UAB,and Cincinati. That doesn't include the run in the ncaa tourney where we played Miss. St. Michigan St. Texas, UCLA and Kansas. I'm not sure Tenn. can match this.
The other one 4c) Famous coach, do you think Bruce Pearl is more famous than John Calapari? In Knoxville he is but I don't think around the nation.
I'll agree with you on number 3. It's about even. We've both had a very good recruiting season.
All in all next season should be good seasons for both teams. I'm ready for it to start now. Of course, we have nothing to look forward to over here in football season. Being honest, the Vol football team is my fav. but don't tell anybody. I don't get the Fulmer haters. I knew there was some things being said about people being unhappy but I had no idea so many people felt that way till I starting reading this board.

Posted by UT_LAW_2011 on June 26, 2008 at 1:47 p.m. (Suggest removal)

We root for different teams Overated, but you're probably my favorite person to post with. Totally agreed on the Football point completely. I don't think the dislike of Coach Fulmer is rational or in the best interest of the program.

The question I am always compelled to want to ask is:

Who would you get to replace him?

I know of no one available right now who would do as good a job as Coach Fulmer. Furthermore, the team is tearing up the recruiting field for this time of the year and he has to get credit for that.

I actually was at the Memphis USC game and agree that the non-conference schedule the Tigers had was good. But we were #1 ranked this year in schedule difficulty and RPI, I think due to conference and the fact that we went along on the road alot.

I'm looking at the schedule again: West Virginia & Texas (neutral site), Gonzaga and Xavier (road), Western Kentucky (neutral site), Memphis (road).

As you mentioned the conference was huge.

Florida, Ohio State, Kentucky, Arkansas at home and Florida, Mississippi State, Georgia on the road don't look great based on their Tourney performance or lack there of but they're still better than the middle of the pack CUSA teams and I think that was the difference in the rankings.

Plus since jump street in Coach Pearl's regime, he's put together the toughest schedule possible every year. I think it's a trait he picked up from Coach Summitt.

And I do think that Coach Pearl is more well known than Coach Calipari because Coach Cal is a standard hoops coach. Coach Pearl does a lot of things that attract attention to himself (like painting his body and wearing the orange blazer) that get him on ESPN even when the team isn't playing.

Put it this way: I'm from New York. John Calipari coached the neighboring NJ Nets and did a very good job. If you went to the average sports bar here and watched the UT Memphis game more people would know who Coach Pearl was. I only know this because I did it. And I was surpised myself. Same thing happened when I went to the same bar for the Kentucky game. During the NCAA tourney he was tied with Pitino when they played Louisville.

That's not to say that Cal isn't well known or a good Coach, but Coach Pearl has got this Jimmy Valvano love affair with the media going. Guy's a good coach and good at marketing.

Posted by overatedvols on June 26, 2008 at 4:50 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Ok UT_LAW, won't debate coach popularity.
Cal has had his share of media attention too. Years ago Temple coach John Chaney attacked him after a game and had to be pulled off. He was screaming..i'll kill you. Remember that? Don't think it was the kind of attention he wanted but it was definitely in the news.

Posted by UT_LAW_2011 on June 27, 2008 at 9:29 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Coach Cal did indeed get a lot of notoriety from that. Coach Pearl's attention isn't negative.

He's getting the Barnem and Bailey type attention.
