Tennessee men's basketball coach Bruce Pearl began his version of summer vacation for some 500 campers Monday.

The Vols' day camp, the first of three summer sessions open to the public, started at 9 a.m. and ran through 4:30 p.m. with kids ranging from kindergarten through eighth grade getting a taste of Big Orange basketball.

An individual-skills camp will take place June 8-11 and UT will have a shooting camp June 28-29. More information can be obtained by calling 865-974-1207 or going to UTsports.com

"What's the No. 1 reason why we have Tennessee basketball camp?'' Pearl asked the youth Monday morning, most of whom wore awe-stricken expressions as the UT coach paced before them.

"To improve? Yes. To learn skills? You bet. But it's to have fun!'' Pearl said enthusiastically. "And the better you get at something, the more you have fun. You have separated yourself from the competition just by being here.''

Pearl seems determined to make winners out of everyone he runs across using the same motivational tactics that work for his Vols.

Pearl's camp, much like his UT practices, are competition driven. The campers were broken into teams immediately and placed into divisions where they will compete while learning skills the rest of the week.

"I will have no tolerance for not hustling,'' Pearl told the campers, his voice semi-stern. "You're not going to ever wear that orange jersey if you don't hustle. That's the foundation we built this program on, and that's how we'll play here.''

UT assistant Jason Shay, who serves as a camp director, smiled as Pearl spoke.

A former Iowa walk-on when Pearl was an assistant with the Hawkeyes and long-time assistant coach, Shay has heard the spiel many times.

"It's the same message, and it works,'' Shay said. "This is the biggest turnout we've had.''

The campers practice at Thompson-Boling Arena, Pratt Practice Pavilion, T-Rec center, the HPER Building and nearby South-Doyle Middle School.

"My assistants do all the organizing, and we've brought in excellent coaches to work with the kids,'' Pearl said. "But I do enjoy being out here as much as I can. I'm trying to use the basketball as a way of teaching life skills.

"Kids won't necessarily always listen to their parents, but they sure listen to their coaches.''

Ken Johnson, UT's director of basketball operations, said Pearl's presence has been the key to the camp's growth.

"Coach shows up every day to greet the campers, lecture and show some of his intensity,'' Johnson said.

UT players Tyler Smith, Wayne Chism, Brian Williams, J.P. Prince and Cameron Tatum also were on hand Monday, as were former players Tony Harris and Ron Slay.

Former Vols' standout Reggie Johnson served as one of the camp counselors along with Damon Johnson, another former UT player who won Pilot Rocky Top League MVP honors last season.

Pearl brought in Derrick Ford, a former Wisconsin-Milwaukee player, to work with the youth. Neal Coy and Chad Gilbert, two players off Pearl's 1995 Division II national championship team at Southern Indiana, also were among the numerous coaches from around the country serving on the camp's staff.

"For me, this is like a reunion of our basketball family,'' Pearl said. "This is just a great opportunity for us and the university to be involved in the community.

"For those kids to walk through that tunnel and play on this court with the JumboTron overhead . . . that's really neat.''

Freshmen Report: Johnson confirmed that incoming freshmen Scotty Hopson and Daniel West enrolled in the first term of summer school Monday.

UT recruits Phillip Jurick, Renaldo Woolridge and Bobby Maze are expected to enroll in the second term of summer school.

A couple of the current Vols at basketball camp Monday said they played pickup with Hopson and his offensive skills are impressive but his defense needs work.

Had I not already invested so much in my son's B-day he would be there this year, but going next year gives us something to look forward to. Billy Gillespie is so infactuated with young boys, I can't help but wonder if his obsession goes deeper than B-Ball. I guess I was wrong for that, but I can't stand the man!!! GOVOLS.

Great experience for these young basketball players. Hope they learn and have some fun at it.

Um, how old is too old to get in a camp with BP? Can some washed-up, never-was ball players like myself get in on this?!? I could TOTALLY school some 8 year-olds. Then BP would be like "Whoa, you got any eligibility left?" I'd of course have at least one year I could dedicate to getting the Vols to the Final Four. Then, Billy Packer says "SEND IT IN BIG FELLA" as I dunk over all 5 Memphis fools in front of me.

Man, I must be dreaming. Memphis ain't making it to the Final Four next year....

hunter, that is actually a clever idea. wonder how many vol fans would fork over a few hundred bukcs for a week of 'real' coaching?? all for charity, of course.

if anyone knows people at UTAD, might be worth a mention...and would get tons of press. another benefit is it would create ambassadors for the team.

just a thought.

bte, notice the blurb on Scotty?? Vol fans gotta be aware the kid is not a Derrick Rose or Kevin Love or whatever.

My take after reading this board (brad summey, you out there??) is that Scotty is very athletic, but may needs the polish. I'd look for him to take a couple of years (at least) to develop. Look at Tyler, who is still here working on his game (a very smart kid, IMHO.)

Whoa -- what's that last line? A little gossip from a pickup game? If there's any truth to that, that Hopson's "defense needs work," he is without question coming to the right program. If there's any truth at all to that, it will get fixed in a hurry.

Defense from the 2 spot important to this team? Bruce will coach him to be a monster on defense or he will sit.

Posted by RichRollin on June 3, 2008 at 5:45 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Mparker, gotta disagree with ya. Hopson is the man. He went in to the all american games as #9 player in the country. He came out of those games #5 player nationally, enough said!!

I love how Pearl brings in former Vols and his coaching tree as often as he can. He really reaches out to everyone and wants to build a legacy. People will talk about Coach Pearl years and years after he retires from here because of the number of people he touches and influences. Sometimes I can not believe he is our coach. We are VERY lucky. GO VOLS!!!

Posted by THE_VOL on June 3, 2008 at 10:54 a.m. (Suggest removal)

A slow day for sure when NITWIT has the truest post on the board! Couple things:

It's amazing that so many supposedly grown adults get all jacked up over a KIDS camp! As for facts, the "assistants" do VERY little at these things. The GA's do most of the work before and during camp. As for BP "bringing" "coaches" in - well, most of the "names" you see in this article are "working" the camp in return for their kids participating in it. I promise you BP does NOT sit around calling people asking them to come work his camp. I love BP to death but some of you hero-worshipers need to get a grip.

Now, on to Hopson. Forget all that ratings crap cause come October it won't mean squat. I'm sure most of you will get all hyped when he lights up that street ball league a few times but the plain fact is he is NOT a savior. DENMARKVOL - name the last player BP sat down because of weak defense?????? This is an OFFENSIVE oriented system and if a guy can put it in the hole he ain't sittin' cause he's not a great defender. (see Chris Lofton).

Next, there are a couple of those incoming freshman that you better wait til the ink is dry on their enrollment papers before you get your panties in a wad. Two of 'em may never participate here if they don't get their academics cleared up in a hurry.

Finally - ASHLEY - 91 days til football in TN??? WHO CARES???? IT'S BEEN 3,465 DAYS SINCE THEY WON A TITLE!!!!!

THE_VOL i know some say you are very negative but you hit the nail on the head except for ashley's countdown. we should all get excited for football time in tennessee no matter how many days it's been since we've won a title. you can say that stuff all you want but you know you will watch and root for the vols.

Well Ashley, as you know the mighty Lady Vols basketball program has won the national Championship the last 2 years and have 8 in all total. Hope the guys go pass the sweet 16 next season.
By the way, I love the football count down.Go Vols.

the point i think ashley is trying to make is we have some fans here that want everyone to not get excited about football because fulmer is still coaching, when it wouldn't matter who was coaching or playing. a true fan of the vols is like being married "for better or for worse til' death do us part".

Forever since the MENS basketball team has made it to the elite 8, final four, or National Champion.

Ashley I hope you were joking about the best coaches in the country. According to rivals our staff doesn't rate in the top 25 in the country. I love coach Fulmer but he is not the best coach in the country and to believe that is just ignorant.

Posted by brownsvillevol on June 3, 2008 at 5:41 p.m. (Suggest removal)

rusty4 can you name all of the coaches that have won a national championship in the last ten years? if you can then you will see that phillip fulmers name is right there and some of the coaches that rivals has ahead of him haven't even won a divisional championship much less a national one. plus rivals only gives an opinion that is up to you wether you accept it or not. i don't think they have ever predicted the national champion correctly.

Back to the article. These future players are there to be with UT men's basketball players and coaches to learn in the process. They are precious children that love the game. Hope they have a successful camp.

Posted by rustyfourqbtn on June 3, 2008 at 10:54 p.m. (Suggest removal)

ashley you are ignorant and i expect you wouldn't no a zone blitz from a 1211 full court press. you bleed orange and i think that is great, but the simple fact is you are a sheep. you just follow coach without question and that is simple minded. if we don't hold our coaches accountable then there is no reason for them to excel. coach fulmer has had the blessing of great recruits over his time as head coach. now we can say he is a great recruiter but lets be honest, when you are at UT, UGA, UF, USC, Texas, OU and the other big boy programs its not that hard to get great recruits. the bottom line is pearl has more sec championships the last 3 years than fulmer does the last 10. i hope coach gets us back to the promise land but i doubt he will. just like bowden and paterno the game has past him by. bowden and paterno are football coaches im sure you've never heard of. anyway they're old and not very good anymore. what pearl has done with the mediocre talent he has had is more impressive than anything fulmer has done in 16 years. if fulmer had won it all with mediocre players it would be different but the '98 team had 14 guys who played on sundays(thats when the nfl plays). look pearl is about to finally have great talent and if he starts finishing middle of the SEC every year with it then i will question him. but so far pearl is prospering with lemons and fulmer is treading water with super stars. having said all this i hope that they both go undefeated next year. i see a better chance of it happening in basketball for us and no NCAA team has went undefeated since 1979. i guess that tells you about my faith in the football staff. i love fulmer but at some point we have to demand excellence again and stop being satisfied with the outback, cotton, peach, or citrus bowl. and hey im getting tired of sweet 16's also but pearl has a few more years to assemble the kind of talent we have in football. go vols and lets demand the best.

by the way quoting rivals isn't ignorant. it might be stupid in your opinion but it is not uninformed. actually rivals informs people defeating the idea if ignorance. you dont have to like it but the only people that think fulmer is best coach in the ncaa are the UT fans who are just sheep and don't question anything. its not just rivals, its every magazine or analist assosiated with college football. but i guess they are all wrong and you the UT fan that has orange tinted glasses and can't see objectivly is the one with the balanced perspective.

Why the hate? We have a Great Sports program at UT. Makes me think there are closet/stealth Hokie fans running amuck on this board(Whining)Give Fulmer a chance this year, right now the record is 0-0 for 08. Bruce is a B-Ball God and Pat takes care of business year after year...its a Great time to be a Vol!!

Posted by rustyfourqbtn on June 4, 2008 at 11:09 a.m. (Suggest removal)

you KNOW you are right. i should KNOW better than to make a mistake typing because that shows how uninformed i am. once again me calling someone ignorant doesn't mean i think they are stupid it means they aren't informed of all the issues. they put their head in the sand and don't hold their hero's accountable.

i am the biggest UT fan you will find. i can name every starters number on the last 5 football teams and tell you what hometown they're from. i'm not a hokie. pearl is fantastic and i love him. pat is great and i love her. i love coach fulmer and i think he is a great human being but i feel like he is no linger the answer for the football program. honestly i think that 14 or 15 years of one coach will make a program stagnant. its not fulmers fault. we are 0-0 this year and that as probably the best attitude but unfortunatley we will most likely have 2 L's before september is over. i'm not being negetive i am just looking at the schedule and being objective. god i hope i am wrong and he kill UF and win at Auburn because the game in athens would feature two top 5 teams and that would be sweet.

Posted by THE_VOL on June 4, 2008 at 12:12 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Ashley (or Mrs. Fulmer) perhaps you should stick to what you know - knitting and cleaning - and not worry about Mr. Pearl. If you actually knew your FACTS you would know that the national title count between BP and FOOLmore stands at ONE EACH! And I do believe that Mr. Pearl's career winning percentage is also higher than your bubby FOOLmore. Mr. Pearl also won a SEC TITLE in his third year - did Mr. FOOLmore??? Get your crap together or get the HEL_ off the board!

Posted by rustyfourqbtn on June 4, 2008 at 12:30 p.m. (Suggest removal)

ashley my goodness are you comparing what happened in the 40's to todays game. there was no internet. our stadium only sat about 25,000 people. times have changed. coaches get stagnant after time now days. neyland took over a bad program like pearl did. fulmer stepped in to a program on the rise. he had built in success. pearl hasn't sustained the success of fulemr yet but what pearl has done at a none bball school this fast is more impressive than fulmer winning at a school that is made to have football success. as ignorant as you are you could have coached the '98 team to a title.

im a little curious about something you said. you said 91 days until the best coaches in the country lead us to another great season. what do you consider a great season? 5-6 like '05, 9-4 like '05 or 9-5 like '07. cuz to me none of those are great seasons. anything over 2 losses is a failure. i want to be the best. not the 5th best in my conference. i guess you're just satisfied with mediocrity.

Posted by rustyfourqbtn on June 4, 2008 at 5:21 p.m. (Suggest removal)

we were 9-5 in 07. if you like mediocrity then you are part of the problem. we wont win a national chamionship again as long as fans are satisfied with mediocrity. if you don't want to be the best team in the country then why be fan at all. just quit watching sports and find a hobby that doesn't have a winner or loser. because being mediocre is the same thing as being a loser. i guess you're just a loser.

Posted by rustyfourqbtn on June 4, 2008 at 5:27 p.m. (Suggest removal)

5-6 in '05, 9-4 in '06, and 9-5 in 07. that is mediocre at best.

i don't know what the problem is for some you fulmer has had one losing season in his tenure. now i don't like it when we lose but you can't always blame the coach.

Posted by rustyfourqbtn on June 4, 2008 at 5:51 p.m. (Suggest removal)

you are correct i miscounted in my head. but 10-4 is still mediocre. anything more than 2 losses is bad. we haven't made a bcs bowl in 10 years. if fulmer gets the praise then he also gets the blame. read my past posts. any coach will have trouble at one place after so long. it becomes stagnant. i love coach fulmer. i wish he would take a front office job. the best thing he has done was get clawson because he is outside the UT family and we needed new blood. if that corrects the problem then great. i think a entire new staff would ultimatley be better.

when a person starts correcting another persons grammer and spelling that means they have no leg to stand on in the argument. it means youve lost the argument so my only chance now is to attack your grammer. this is a message board not a term paper. i said you were ignorant but i think i was wrong you are just a fool. you have no basis for your argument you just say random things and continue to look pathetic. i'll grant you this. you have better typing and grammer skills and i know more about sports. my wife wrote all my papers and got me through school. however she will admit openly i am smarter than her. you and her would kick my butt in a spelling bee but that doesn't make you smarter. it just means you wasted time learning i before e instead of getting someone else to do it for you.

when you cannot tell us the record of UT LAST SEASON, then you hold zero credibility whatsoever...you obviously do not know much about this program...go back to your hole, no one knows where you came from, and know that your insight is superseded by your lack of knowledge.
