Slive: League to decide on TV plans this fall

HOOVER, Ala. - SEC commissioner Mike Slive says the league will make a decision on its television and multimedia rights this fall.

The TV deals with CBS, ESPN, Raycom Sports and FSN South run out at the end of the academic year.

Slive said at SEC football media days Wednesday that the options include an SEC Network similar to the ones started by the Mountain West and Big Ten conferences and the NFL.

Slive said criteria the league is considering include the ability to provide national exposure and to air events for other sports besides football and basketball.

He also said the league wasn't able to be free of NCAA probation, a goal he set five years ago. But he noted only the Arkansas track program is currently in the NCAA jailhouse.

Slive, see if you can maybe change the rules so that teams can have more than 2 PPV games a year. We'll definitely need this as an option.

Is the end of the academic year August? So there is little more than a month left to figure out and sign deals with CBS, ESPN, et al? Appears they shouldn't wait for fall or nothing will be on TV.

Stick with Licoln Financial and JP. You can't go wrong there.

You can now watch the cheerleaders or fans in the upper deck during 4th down in HD !!!!

The end of the Academic year is in May 2009, not this August.

The kicker folks -

If they do go SECTV it will be ran by the fine folks at......

Raycom/Lincoln Financial/JP!!!!!

Right now I have heard that Fox is making a major push to get the main SEC game of the week away from CBS and are ready to offer a nice deal to get it.

It's going to be interesting to see what all takes place in the next 3 months.

TurboFan, FYI, usually the academic year is considered to run from the fall to the spring. Summer school isn't factored into the equation by most people in making that determination.

I really hope the SEC doesn't move to Fox - the BCS games are almost unwatchable because of their screw-ups and their announcers are horrible.

workin...I think the vols were on ESPN gameplan more than two times last year. That counts as ppv.

Alabama, Miss ST, Northern Miss, I think others.

I don't mind going to SEC TV, but you can sure bet my cable company won't carry it! OR they'll put it in a sports package that costs as much as all of the other channels combined. Personally, I have to admit that losing CBS wouldn't hurt my feelings - for many reasons I won't mention here. I would hope/assume that the SEC would still cut a deal w/ a major network(for game of the week) and w/ ESPN for some other games. National exposure is vital.

I hope we do get a SEC network, simply because I'd love the extra coverage I would get in other SEC sports that I have no access to here in SoCal. The only benefit I have found so far being out here in regards to the SEC is that I get to drive only 30 miles to watch TN kill UCLA this fall.

I have relatives in Ohio that HATE the Big Ten Network. They say they don't get to watch the games they want to see. I'm thinking the SEC is better off with CBS and ESPN. That's NATIONAL coverage every week. That's why the best athletes want to play in the SEC.

Ok, Slivemaster, how much is the tariff?

BOHICA!

Please Stay with CBS! SEC has there own national broadcast network, while other conferences share ABC regional coverage.

The SEC has gotten better since it signed the deal with CBS in 1996 - becuase of the national exposure.

It will be a mistake to change it. Please no FOX they are horrible.

as long as the new network hires Erin Andrews,I could care less.

FWB, I've been told I'm not "most people".

spvol, I live in Ohio and the beef here was that the cable monopoly and the BigTen couldn't make a deal. Thus only those with satellite (like me, but I didn't care) could get it. But, only two games per team had to be shown on BTN and they were the least attractive games that ABC, ESPN didn't pick up first.

VolstuckinKY, are you saying JP/LF/RC finally upgraded their broadcast to HD?

the problem with isolating sec games to only one network is that only a few games will be shown that you are interested in. this means more arkansas vs ole miss games, and not seeing the vols. i personally like CBS' coverage and would hate to go to b dubs to watch every away game

Posted by TurboFan on July 23, 2008 at 10:36 p.m. (Suggest removal)

rstewar6, that's not the way it works on the BTN. ABC and ESPN have choices first. BTN chooses whatever is left. Only requirement is two games per season.

I assume that is the way the SEC would go, otherwise they would be slitting their own throats.
