Holbert undergoes surgery, won't play in 2008
Tennessee senior fullback David Holbert underwent a second successful surgery Friday on his left knee, according to head athletic trainer Jason McVeigh.
Holbert suffered the knee injury during a March 29 scrimmage at Neyland Stadium.
“This was the second and final surgery resulting from the injury sustained in spring practice,” McVeigh said in a release. “David will miss the 2008 football season.”
Drs. Greg Mathien and Russell Betcher of Knoxville Orthopedic Clinic performed the surgery at UT Medical Center.
Holbert missed the entire 2007 season after suffering a preseason injury to his right knee.
It is unclear whether Holbert will seek a sixth year of eligibility.

I really hate this for David. Hopefully he'll be on schedule with his recovery and be on the mend smoothly and quickly.

Sometimes life knocks you around pretty bad. This must be tough on David. Hang in there, brother, and get well soon.

He is a 5th year senior and a strong presence in the locker room..
the coaches love this kid due to his heart and work ethic...
he has strong character and will bounce back.\

Since I assume at this point his chances on a pro career are nil, I would rehab the knee, get my degree; and go on with life. My left knee feels and sounds like two rocks rubbing together, and my problems are very minor compared to many people I know. Don't take a chance at this point.

When a kid like Holbert has devoted so much of his life to football, it's a tough decision to make whether to come back or not.
I tend to agree with newtonrail, but I know the kids instinct is to get back out there if he is cleared.
Pray on it son!

newtonrail - that's not your knees that sounds like two rocks rubbing together. That's your brains. Sorry, I couldn't resist. Just kidding brother.
Tough break for David Holbert. Agree with newton.

If anyone else saw the picture of this injury (don't seek it out unless you have a strong stomach), then they would agree it's a miracle of modern medicine that he will even be able to walk normally again. I hope he makes a full recovery, but doubt he will ever be cleared to play this brutal game again.

Just running throught the T would be enough to seek a 6th year. Come back and be a leader big guy!

I remember David catching a TD pass against Lou Holtz's Gamecocks his Freshman year. Big play.
Best to you, David.

If the picture I saw was real, it was one of the more horrific injuries you'll see on a football field.
I hope Holbert comes through with few long term problems and goes on to have a good life.
