New Vols enrolled in classes; Maze to wait

Coaches like potential with weight room open

Five of Tennessee's six incoming men's basketball players are enrolled in classes while the other is expected to start school this fall.

Freshmen Phillip Jurick (post) and Renaldo Woolridge and Emmanuel Negedu (forwards) enrolled in the second term of summer school Monday, according to UT assistant coach Jason Shay.

Point guard Bobby Maze, a transfer from Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College is finishing up his junior college education and will join the team this fall, Vols' assistant Steve Forbes said.

Freshmen Scotty Hopson (shooting guard) and Daniel West (point guard) enrolled in the first term of summer school and have been attending classes.

Shay said the freshmen who started classes Monday passed the eyeball test.

"Renaldo has some muscle definition. Like (UT assistant) Tony Jones likes to say from time to time, 'He looks like a thoroughbred, not a loaf of bread,' " Shay said. "Renaldo has a frame that will enable him to put on more muscle mass. It will be interesting to see how he gets ready in the next four or five weeks."

Negedu, the last of the Vols to sign in this recruiting class, is the most physical of the bunch and has drawn favorable comparisons to former UT player Duke Crews.

"Emmanuel is already a physical specimen, but his explosiveness and athleticism will continue get even better once he's in an organized weight program," Shay said. "We're going to see how much higher he can jump, how much faster he can run the floor and how his lateral quickness will improve.

"Phillip has the frame to add weight and muscle mass. He probably has the furthest to go of the three as far as strength and conditioning.''

Maze, who came to the Knoxville area on his own in June to play in the Pilot Rocky Top League, is on pace, Forbes said.

"Bobby is just finishing up his junior college stuff," Forbes said. "We knew enrolling in the summer was never an option for him. He'll be here and ready in the fall term."

The Vols don't begin organized team workouts until August.

Tough Tyler: UT junior Tyler Smith is finishing up his stint at the LeBron James Skills Academy today in Akron, Ohio.

The camp, which features top returning collegiate players, started on Saturday. Former Vols' guard JaJuan Smith attended the camp last year.

Other players in attendance this year included Austin Daye (Gonzaga), Dajuan Summers (Georgetown), Derrick Brown (Xavier), Devon Downey (South Carolina), Hasheen Thabeet (UConn), Jarvis Varnado, (Mississippi State), Kalin Lucas (Michigan State), Kyle Singler (Duke), Terrence Williams (Louisville) and Tyreke Evans (Memphis).

Assistants' Salaries: The proposed new salaries of UT associate head coach Tony Jones and assistants Steve Forbes and Jason Shay were sent to the school's Human Resources department for approval last week, said Tiffany Carpenter, the athletic department's director of public relations.

Awesome group on paper. I can't wait to see these guys. What hasn't been written about Hopson and word is Maze is much better than his rating. Everyone I've talked with in Knoxville that has seen him play says he is incredible. A point guard or lack thereof was our biggest weakness last year. We also missed a physical big man with Williams being young, Duke missing part of the season with the heart condition, and Chism playing like a guard. It will be interesting to see Negedu fill in for Duke. After watching his film, I don't think that is far fetched at all. The only areas I am concerned with is the lack of a serious 3 point threat, early chemistry of the team, youngsters not understanding defensive roles and playing hard for 40 minutes, and free throw shooting (again). I have faith that Pearl will work through most of the kinks. With so many youngsters required to contribute, the Vols will most likely be a more polished product by season end than early in season.

Great opportunity for Daniel West to show his stuff while Maze is not here. He will be counted on as a key backup this season.

If Renaldo is half the player as his Dad, we are in good shape. I like the fact that Pearl is recruiting some guys who can play physical inside.
We've been light in that department and there is only so much Tyler to spread around.

General, well said!! I think Woolridge is gonna be REAL good, very very explosive. Maze AND West couldn't have came at a better time and Maze is ELECTRIC!! Maze will help with the 3, as well as Hopson. Hopson can torch the 3's from what I could see in the All American games plus when he goes to the hoop he's throwing down. Didn't see that from Lofton to many times. Maze and Hopson, do they come in as the top gaurd duo in the SEC? I think they will end up being one of if not the best nationally(no sarcasim).

Ashley, read the whole article, he's finishing up his JUCO work this summer or he would have already enrolled. You don't have to continue to be uninformed, just take the time to read something all the way through and actually understand it instead of trying to use a piece of the article to slam Pearl (for reasons only known to you).

News Flash, ASH - you don't have to slam Pearl just because you love Fulmer. You should be happy Pearl is here, it was a big wake up call to Fulmer that he better spend less time at the Shoney's hot bar and more time out recruiting talent.

Ashley - your comments really are a joke. get off your high horse and and come back to earth. By showing your loyalty to one TN coach by bashing another holds no water here. you discredit yourself with each post and any message you are trying to make gets lost in your mundane vitriol.

Ash, was also wondering about how Maze could be in Knoxville for RTL and in Kansas finishing up at Hutch CC at the same time. Can not say whether that is a sign of things to come or a reflection on Pearl since he has yet to enroll. I do worry (with nothing to base it on) that come September that Maze may be declared ineligible.

ashley, please try and understand. bobby has been in summer school all summer at pellissippi cc finishing his junior coolege degree. he is taking those classes at pellissipi to add to hutchison cc. he can not enroll at UT until he has his junior college degree. if anything him chosing to come on to knoxville and finish here, it just shows how dedicated to the vols he is. we don't compare fulmer to pearl. fulmer has won at a program that already had 5 national titles. pearl took the arm pit of sec bball aka(UT BASKETBALL BEFORE PEARL), and made UT a top 10 national program in 2 and a half years. there is nothing that any coach in any sport in america has done thats close to that. when pearl retires and fulmer retires pearl will be UT basketball and fulmer will just be another good vol coach but neyland will always be UT football. i dont hold pearl and fulmer to the same standard because pearl is out of fulmers league. i hold pearl to a higher standard but he always meets my standard and usually exceeds it. it took fulmer 6 years to win the SEC and pearl only 3 years and fulmer had unbelievable talent as soon as he took over while, no offense to j.smith bradshaw and lofton but pearl had some mediocre talent at best. pearl is a great coach and fulmer is a good coach with great talent. all this being said i hope they both go undefeated.

Congratulations to these kids for using their talents to make it to the University of Tennessee and have a chance to graduate with a college degree and/or work themselves into the NBA. Let's not get to ahead of ourselves. Pearl's first recruiting class was supposed to bring us national titles (Chism, Crews, Tabb, R. Smith, M. Johnson) and look at them now Chism has a chance to be a really good big man, Tabb is a great defender off the bench and the other 3 guys are gone. Let's not go predicting any titles yet, but it is great to see a lot of talent come here to play basketball. But let's face it...it's talent, let me see it on the floor.

Ashley, I'll try to answer your question with some reason and keep my fingers crossed. . .Pearl coming here and doing what he has done raised expections for all sports at UT, but especially a football program that has great tradition and great facilities. In 3 years he took a desolate program and made it a national contender. We made it to #1 in the polls, three NCAA tournaments (with Buzz's NIT talent) and two Sweet 16s (more than any coach at UT). Since Pearl has been here, he has been on ESPN, on Rome, in SI, etc. etc, he has landed recruits we never could have talked to before, and he has overseen an upgrade to TBA, new athletic facilities and a new student athlete center.

Fulmer won a championship in 1998, but who can argue that enthusiam around the football program has been fading, especially after embarassing bowl losses and losing to Vandy and SC at home. Do you remember getting spanked by Maryland and Clemson? I was at the Peach Bowl, it was horrible. If anything, Pearl has HELPED Fulmer in recruiting by once again bringing national attention to UT sports.

It doesn't mean I'm not a true VOL just because I expect to see improvement out of Fulmer and the football program. I don't want to get blown out by Florida every year, and as a season ticket holder, I never want to witness another loss to Vandy - especially at home. Don't deny that we had better talent than Vandy AND SC when we lost to both of them at a place where we used to be unbeatable. If there is nothing wrong with the ship, why the firing of those assitant coaches?!?!

And it doesn't mean you have to bash Pearl or belittle his accomplishments just because some of us are questioning our program under Fulmer. Only an idiot would say that what Pearl has done with the basketball program is anything short of remarkable. . .you wouldn't say that now would you?

Jerry Green never made it to two sweet 16's, and also allowed players such as the likes of Vince Yarborough, Ron Slay, and Isaiah Victor, and Tony Harris to play one-man team ball. Don't get me wrong--Green was a good coach, but CBP is better. His recruiting is better, his relentless pressing is unmatched, his team's constant court speed is something that no one else can run with. We have the makings of a National Championship team this year, if not in two at max, whereas Green never would have made it back to, much less beyond, the Sweet 16. AND, CBP has done it only 3 years.

jerry green never won a conference title for starters. he never had the attendance for mens basketball close to where pearl has it. green never had one good recruiting class. he coached o'neals players. pearl has had 2 great recruiting classes in 3 years. and most importantly green nor fulmer have never got the university the kind of exposure that pearl is getting us now. pearl sells the university while the university has to sell fulmer. do you see the difference?

Tiger news. Doneal Mack attempting to come back to the team. Former Tiger Rodney Carney traded from Phil to Minnesota. Former Tiger CDR interviewed on local Memphis station was clearly upset with where he was picked in the draft. He said his main goal now is to prove them wrong. He had this same attitude last march with everyone was picking against Memphis. As they advanced to the natl. champ. game he was never satisfied with any win during the tourney and expected to win. He did prove them wrong and he was the most valuable player on the team for 3 seasons. Amazing he was picked so late. A first team all american. I'd watch New Jersey this year. I'd say they are going to be much much better. The guy is good.
I'll keep you guys posted as any new Tiger news rolls in. No need to thank me.

Ashley,

I think you have some interesting points on Pearl vs Green...HOWEVER, the way you are presenting it is wrong IMO.

Looking at Green's and Pearls tenure at UT, there are similarities of sorts. Green did lead the Vols to 2 first place finishes in the East in 98 and 00. He also took the Vols to 4 consecutive tournaments (the best showing being a sweet 16 finish...another similarity of Pearl). In his 4 years at UT, there are some similarities.

When Green arrived in Knoxville UT's record for the 90's prior to his arrival was (90-113) over seven seasons with only one winning season (19-15) during that stretch. There is no doubt that Green contributed to the Vols program winning a (then) record 26 games while with the Vols and Coaching UT to 89-36 (71.2%)record in his tenure.

You make the argument that Pearl is a "choker"..and you make that argument comparing him to Jerry Green. To me, Jerry Green's resume speaks pretty highly in the job he did for the Vols. The same can be said for Pearl. However, Pearl is going places with the program that Green was never able to go. Just look at the recruits coming to play for him and his track record.

Jerry Green did well for the Vols, but at Oregon he didn't have much success. Pearl has had success wherever he has gone and has NC's to show for it. Hell, Urban Meyer had similar trends in his career with lower division football and ended up with a championship.

Pearl continues to grow this team and will continue to do so. He is drawing all american candidates and now has "his players" in place. In time, I have no doubt that he will do more than even your predictions suggest.

overrated,

You probably could offer some good insight on Memphis basketball and could also probably make some very good points as to the quality of your program. However, I do not understand why you choose to come in and brag about the "best program in the nation" while you insult the Vol's program and its fans.

We have posters from Florida and Alabama on this site that actually provide good discussion and useful information. I for one would probably enjoy having a conversation with you if you didn't choose to come off as being so pretentious.

Marc,

Memphis is a better basketball program than Tennessee, bottom line. Once Tennessee realizes that, then we can have intelligent conversations about our two programs. Just because you beat us in 2008 does not mean you are the better program. UT will never be considered a better program until they hand JUST ONE Finaly Four banners in the building that aren't Women's. Memphis now has 3...time to catch up

Ask Tony Harris what he thought of Jerry Green's coaching. Here is the difference in Pearl and Green. Green came into a program and followed a great recruiter (Kevin O'Neill) who had the team stocked with talent (Harris, Yarbrough, Victor, Black, etc) He took great players, rolled out the basketball and played golf the whole time he was here. NONE of those players made improvements in their time here and in fact all of them went backwards. Green took great players and made them good.

Enter Pearl, who comes in after nice guy Buzz Peterson who couldn't recruit OR coach. Pearl takes a team of players, most of who couldn't play, much less start anywhere else in the SEC (except Lofton)and turns them into SEC Champs and an NCAA tournament team. Dane Bradshaw spent three years riding the pine and no-one knew who JaJuan Smith was. . .what do we think of them after their short time spent playing for Pearl.

Don't compare what Jerry Green did to what Pearl was doing. Green was the epitome of a coat-tail rider who rode the ship down. . .Pearl is building the ship back up with less talent.

Really, if you can't see that then you're not capable of having a true sports discussion and you should just stick to posting the number of days until your most favorite coach in the whole wide world gets to take the field against UCLA with better talent and pray he doesn't end up getting beat by a better football minds. It makes me shudder to think about Fulmer trying to match wits with Neuheisel and Norm Chow. Keeping my figers cross that talent beats coaching like it did back in 1998. . . :)

Posted by mattlock on July 9, 2008 at 12:08 p.m. (Suggest removal)

The problem with Memphis is that the city and the university and all their other sports teams are garbage, and since I can't get past that, I can't have an intelligent conversation about their basketball program. Yeah, its a good program, but I don't think I could ever lower myself to be a Memphis fan. Its like saying how great the rims are on my POS Ford Pinto. . .so what, I still have to drive a Ford Pinto?

Posted by dfreeman on July 9, 2008 at 1:11 p.m. (Suggest removal)

mattlock - that's funny!

memphistenn - Memphis isn't a better program! Memphis just plays that favorable schedule every year! all-time wins in the UT vs. UM games proves that! We own you! We didn't just beat you in 08, we beat you for the second year in a row with a less talented team!

Here's an AP particle for you to chew on from ESPN's website:
_________________________________________
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- Memphis wanted to prove it really was the best team in the country, maybe even make a run at perfection.

Turns out, the Tigers aren't even best in their own state.

How funny is that last sentence... hahahahahahaha!!!

memphistenn2117,

I don't recall saying UT's program was better than memphis' program. Please cite the post where I said that.

What I do feel is that UM fan's don't give credit to the current state of the Vols program. You are talking about a program that has made more improvement in 2.5 years that most make in decades. Pearl came in day 1 and took players that weren't his to back to back to back tournaments (which they won at least 1 game each year). Calapari is a good coach, but it took him years to even win an NIT game!

Does memphis have final 4 banners? Sure they do...and kudos. But final 4 banners for a team that is year in and year out supposed to be "Elite" is not acceptable! Teams that are truly
"great programs" win championships after being "powerhouses" many years.

UT is beginning to be a powerhouse. It has started...it's been 3 years now, and the program is changing. Memphis fans see that...and it scares them.

No disrespect to UM, but if you think the Vols program isn't becoming a powerhouse, then why even concern yourself with the Vols? No matter, the head to head record overall speaks for itself....in recent years, and over the course of the series.

One little note memphistenn. You need to bring something a little stronger than that if you want to play here.

Peyton Manning= Super Bowl Ring and NFL Hall of Fame. And by the time he retires, he will be considered as one of the top 5 QB's to ever lace them up. Right there with Unitas, Montana, Brady, etc. If you can't understand that simple concept, I can't help you.

You guys don't be too hard on the Tiger fans. You simply have to understand that they have one sport in their pitiful little athletic program to discuss year round. And you have to give them credit for perpetuating the delusions of grandeur. I mean they've talked themselves into thinking they are the new UCLA dynasty. (Of course, it would help if they could win just ONE before proclaiming that.) Remember, nobody remembers who finished second except the one that did. So go ahead and hang that second place banner. Outside of Shelby County, nobody cares.

Cancel this series. I'll push the reject button if Mike Hamilton can't.

It always boils down to their insignificance, inferiority, jealousy and insecurity. I'm almost 50 years old and I can't remember a time when west Tennessee didn't feel like they had to prove something to the rest of the state; yet none of the rest of us care. It's understandable that they will forever be jealous of what middle and east Tennessee have to offer. You couldn't pay me enough to live down there! The Shelby Co. population is 1.6 times larger than Davidson, 2.2 times larger than Knox and 2.9 times larger than Hamilton yet Memphians have always been obsessed that the state capital has never been theirs ; Nashville, Knoxville, Murfreesboro and Kingston but no Memphis. They want to be the center of attention as our states largest city but alas that will never happen unless your talking about murder rates or crooked politicians. I'm sure the 85% of Tennessee residents living outside Shelby County would be more than happy to give you to Mississippi or Arkansas - where you belong. Ya’ll should just be content that the rest of the state tolerates you! So go beat your feet on the Mississippi Mud and be happy that technically you are Tennesseans. Hey, you’ve got Graceland, some ducks, a fake pyramid and the Pink Palace; nobody can or wants to take those away from you!

some of you need to grow up. big orange vol i think you think more along the lines of a 5 year old not a 50 year old. memphis has it's problems just like nashville, murfreesboro, knoxville and chattanooga. i have lived in paris,tn on kentucky lake in west tn for 27 years and recently moved to brownsville tn but i still go back to paris every weekend. my point is i don't care if it's knox county, henry co.,haywood co.,madison, shelby, dyer, blount, jefferson,davidson.........you get the point. we are all tennesseans. i have been all over this beautiful state and have never seen an ugly spot. i for one have had many good times in memphis just as i have in nashville and knoxville. you don't have to pull for the tigers lord knows i never will(that blue would mix with my orange blood and make me look like a gator fan.)but don't belittle other tennesseans to satisfy yourself. henry co borders ky. do you want to give it to them? because i know alot of ut fans that would get pissed if you do. i swear some you people need to think before you type.

Oh PLEASE!!! Take a Valium dude! It's called "smack" and the goofball Memphis Tiger stooges get on the UT site and start this stuff every now and then just like Tide, Cat and Gator fans do.

The Tiger High group started this by ripping the Vols, the university, Vol fans, the SEC and Knoxville. All I've done, as many others, is post a little fun-loving rebuttal smack. They are broad-based analogies and generalizations. They aren’t for the purpose of belittling anyone in particular. Go buy yourself a sense of humor.

If you're happy in Brownsville or Paris congratulations and more power to ya. We have tons of alumni and fans in Shelby County and I get together with lots of them every year. I spend an appreciable amount of time in west TN and have many friends there (even Memphis, Ark and Ole Miss fans); we crack on each other all the time. 90% of my posts, as many other folks on here, are just tongue-n-cheek. Because of my familiarity with the area, if I wanted to get brutal and mean-spirited I could.

Do you really take all these posts so seriously? Relax, you should chill before you pop an aneurism or something. Geez Louise!

BigOrange, I know of no one here that is jealous of east tennessee. Actually we're glad we don't live in the land of trailer parks. This is by far the best part of Tenn. What is there to be jealous of over there? More trailer parks per square mile than any other area in the country? More red necks? More guys wearing suspenders and overalls around town? Dollywood? More people with lower than average IQ's?
Oh, nevermind just talking smack...rebuttal smack. These are just broad based analogies and generalizations.

Riddle of the day:
What's orange and sits in front of the television in March? The Vols basketball team watching the NCAA tournament.

On a serious note, Pierre Niles is said to be following a rigorous workout schedule and diet. Several people have said he was sticking to it and has lost considerable weight. When asked what his goals for next season was, he said his main 3 were to lose another 40lbs, get more playing time next season and to slap a Vol fan when they play Tenn.

The ONLY thing worth while in Mempho is Memphis in May. That's the only time it smells good down there. Actually that's the only time of the year that it doesn't stink to high heaven.

I'll reiterate: Knoxville/Knox Co. and Nashville/Davidson Co. are higher than Memphis/Shelby Co. in the percentage of High School graduates, college graduates, average value of homes and per capita income. You don't even want to start to compare UT vs. West Tennessee State Normal School in academics!!! Every national university comparison has UTK in the Top 100 but you won't find Memphis State in the Top 300!

Other than Chickasaw Gardens, you have to come out to Bartlett or Germantown not to be in the projects or low-income government housing. I guess they'll have more trailer parks down there when ya'll can afford 'em, can qualify for home loans and learn to read a mortgage!

The reason Memphians don’t wear suspenders is because they are so mentally taxing for you… ya’ll can’t figure out how they work. That’s why you drive down Poplar and all you see are guys with their britches falling down around their knees. Someone should come down there and teach a free five week course in learning how to use braces and suspenders. The city should fund it as a beautification project.

The Great Smoky Mountains vs Mud Island and a putrefied Mississippi River?
Dollywood vs. Libertyland?
Now I KNOW your nuts! C’mon, you're kidding right?

BigO, I usually don't stoop down to your level and try to attack a city. Normally when people do such things it's because they can't win the other arguments (basketball related) so they are searching for anything. I will say that the Memphis area, in spite of it's problems is still much better than east Tenn. I'm not sure what you guys do over there anyway. I mean fishin gets old after awhile and hanging out at the super walmart on Sat. night just don't get it with me. I'm sure huntin is a favorite and for the lazy ones road kill tastes just as good. Once you get the tire marks off those possums i've heard they are mighty tasty. Maybe Jethro and Ellie May enjoyed it but i'll take the bigger city any day.
I am jealous of your Dollywood. Who wouldn't want a Dollywood. (Libertyland doesn't exist anymore). Forgot six flags, disney. Give me Dollywood any day.
Ok.. i'm finished with the city insults say what you wish. Anything you say about Memphis there is always an equal or better comeback but i'll pass on it and keep pointing out the superiority of the Tiger program.

Any Vols make it to the NBA this time around?

C'mon Overbloated, you've stooped a lot lower than I could ever get; don't be so modest. I’ll give credit where credit is due; you can stoop with the best of ‘em! All I do is contest and rebut the points that you just made.

I don’t have to win a basketball argument – UT beat UM the last two times they’ve played and they own the series. The lowly Vols beat the ostentatious Tigers with considerably less talent. How simple is that? What’s the argument? Your comeback has been about how far you went in the Tourney… before being exposed and humiliated in front of the entire World. I never argued that ya’ll got to in the Title game or Final Four… and choked…again. Any basketball players ever actually get degrees down there?

How can fishin' on a beautiful lake get old? Are you serious? I try and get on the lake at least once a week! There's nothing like using light tackle and the excitement of nailing a 8-10 pound Largemouth, a 5-6 pound Smallie, a 2-3 pound Black or White Crappie and especially a monster 20-30 pound Cat!!! You really are twisted dude! Get a hobby other than internet instigator.

Hey don’t knock it, Super Wal-Mart and Sam’s have some really kickin’ samples around lunchtime! Jerry Lawler loves eating there.

I quit huntin’ years ago. Now I shoot wildlife through a lens. Say what you want but collecting road kill is now legal in most states. We don’t worry about tire marks on possums but you do need to be careful that the hematoma or internal bleeding doesn’t mess up the meat. Up north them yankees are shelling-out good money for rabbit, frogs and squirrels. They call ‘em delicacies; that must be French for rabbit. I have a cousin that is a third-generation dairy farmer who sold all their cows several years ago and now they raise rabbits for meat. Those yankees pay through the nose for ‘em!

Sorry to hear about Libertyland. Bummer. I really liked the Zippin Pippin (the old woodies rock) and the Revolution. Oh well, they gutted Opryland after 25 great years too and then stuck a stupid mall in the parking lot. I thought that I saw the Z-P last time I was in Memphis on Central/S Highland???

For anyone in the Middle or Southern TN area: The TWRA pay-lake at Williamsport has a pair of "southern" Bald Eagles nesting this year. They are freakin' incredible to see. I don't take my camera on the boat with me (or cell phone for that matter) so I don't have any pics. It sure beats looking at them in a cage at a zoo. I can't express just how awesome and majestic these birds look flying overhead but just seeing a 3' tall bird with a wingspan of 6' up close is pretty dang cool and inspirational! I seriously get goosebumps when they fly over.

Poplar at Mendenhall in E Memphis...very near FDX headquarters and Fred Smith's home. Williamson CO has the highest county per capita income..and it's growing. Guess what? There are 6 times the population of Williamson CO...in E Memphis, Germantown and Bartlett...with an average income exceeding Williamson CO by $20,000 per household. You orange small minds like to trash downtown Memphis; go online to Memphis Business Joural and track back to downtown demographics; 75% of the 2 zips downtown are college educated (dudes, that's Seattle level)..with high--don't remember exactly--incomes. Think about little morons: St Judes + governmental complex + Autozone headquarters, etc are all downtown. Huge money, FDX forum plus Grizzlies, Autozone Park. We'll even acknowledge the UTCHS. More prosperity in 1/4 of Memphis than the entire Knox 4-county area. And that's allowing for the recent upward appraisals of your trailer parks and outhouses.

What is your point BigOrange? I don't see too much of a diff. there. To think there are twice as many here and with large areas that have poverty, the people that do make good money must be making quite a bit more in order to pull the average back up to where it is. We have far more people that live in poverty and to think the average is so close to the other areas, i'm impressed. Just shows we have quite a few making really good money. Now, i'm sure if you ran across averages that were in our favor they wouldn't be included in your report. I'm sure anybody from here could look up stats that showed shelby better in certain areas but who wants to waste their time.
You really went to a lot of trouble. I'd say way too much trouble for a sports article about basketball. I'd say you are making yourself look rather foolish to keep trying to make a point that nobody cares about. Try sticking to the point. This is a college basketball article. It swung to this when you started to write your trash about the Memphis area. You evidently did that when you couldn't find enough winning arguments regarding Tenn./Memphis basketball. Vol fans can say we beat you the last 2 times and then the bragging rights run dry. Tiger fans can go on and on. This would explain the constant swing over to .. "well our city is better than yours". Isn't that just saying.. i've run out of things that the vols have advantages of in basketball so... i've got to think of something else.
Maybe with this bunch of recruits you've got coming in you can manage to accomplish something during the season and post season this year and you'll finally have some bragging rights and then you won't have to drag the conversation down to that level.

Tigers top team in the State.

All those football games..going back 50 years or so and according to your logic just the 98 season was any good. Special Bulletin: Billy Packer has been fired
by CBS. I know the Vol fans will hate this considering the love and respect he seemed to have for Vol basketball.

Since ovrstayed's credibility is as shot as his team and city, here's the story pertaining to Billy Packer:

Packer out as CBS hoops analyst; Kellogg to join Nantz

By Michael Hiestand, USA TODAY
College basketball on CBS will have a different look next season with the firing of Billy Packer and the naming of studio analyst Clark Kellogg to replace him during games.

Sean McManus, who oversees CBS' sports and news divisions, said in a statement that he "can't express how important (Packer) has been. … It is almost impossible to over-estimate his passion, knowledge and commitment to the game."

Packer, 68, joined CBS in 1982, after having called college games on NBC with Dick Enberg and the late Al McGuire.

Packer, who has been part of every Final Four telecast since 1975, a run of 34 events, is pursuing other basketball projects, according to the Associated Press.

Kellogg, an Ohio State star and first-round draft pick of the Indiana Pacers in 1982, joined CBS full-time in 1997 after having worked at ESPN.

He said he was "excited, humbled and quite pleased" about his assignment.

"I appreciate the confidence Sean has expressed in affording me this new role," Kellogg said in a statement.

He also said Packer's "knowledge of the game and its history is unparalleled. That, along with his passion and keen insights, enabled him to do his work as an analyst better and longer than anyone in the game's history."

Said Jim Nantz, Packer's on-air NCAA partner, in a statement: "No one has ever loved the game of college basketball more than Billy Packer. … Fans don't realize they owe Billy a thank you. Billy always protects the best interests of the game."

Enberg wants Packer to stay around the game.

"Hopefully, he'll always have a position in basketball, perhaps as a special consultant, so that we never lose his rare insight and love for the game," Enberg said in a statment.

Fellow analyst Dick Vitale praised Packer's "love of college basketball."

"A lot of people always try to create controversy between both of us and I think we both really had a lot in common although our styles were unique and totally different," Vitale told USA TODAY's Reid Cherner.

"I was more off the wall and he was more straight laced. I think the one common denominator is that we both had a great passion for the game. He is someone who has stood the test of time," Vitale said.

"More than three decades at that level where it is tough to please everyone. In fact, it is just impossible to please everyone."

I suggest that all the proponents/protagonists...review the writings since this article ran. Please, especially, consider the word quality usage, the logical flow (or lack thereof) of debating points, and the free flow of crude tripe when the writer lacks intellectual resource to compete. Maybe, just maybe, the utenn (UT is in Austin) fandom could hire the only people in noxville who can competently express themselves (the KNS staff) to represent you?
