Memphis White Station rising senior forward Ferrakohn Hall, the No. 78 overall prospect according to Rivals.com, recently returned from Kentucky's Elite Camp and continues to weigh scholarship offers from Tennessee and Memphis.
"I haven't narrowed anything down. I like Kentucky. I like what Bill Gillispie is trying to do," the 6-foot-7 Hall said Thursday.
"Tennessee and Memphis have offered. Kentucky is talking about offering."
Meanwhile, Manassas rising senior forward Reginald Buckner committed to Ole Miss.
After telling a reporter earlier in the day he was still considering Ole Miss, Missouri and UTEP, among others, the 6-foot-8 Buckner had a change of heart late Thursday afternoon, electing to commit to Andy Kennedy's Rebels following a conversation with his mother.
"My mama said I needed to go ahead and make my decision, and she had Ole Miss in mind," said Buckner, who had additional scholarship offers from Baylor, Bradley, Georgia State, Lamar, Middle Tennessee State and Southeast Missouri.
"She really didn't want me to go too far from home."
Ranked the No. 91 overall prospect in the class of 2009 by Rivals.com and the No. 19 small forward prospect nationally, Buckner averaged 16 points, 13.7 rebounds, 6.7 blocked shots, 2.5 assists and 1.2 steals per game as a junior last season in leading Manassas to its first state title game appearance since 1985.
Buckner said Kennedy told him he had one scholarship still available for 2008, but planned to hold it for Buckner until 2009.
"Kennedy told me I was their No. 1 (recruit), and that they were willing to hold a scholarship from (2008) to next year," he said. "So it's 100 percent I'm going to Ole Miss."
Buckner is the second Rivals.com Top 150 prospect from Memphis to commit this summer following Briarcrest Christian rising senior guard Leslie McDonald's commitment last month to North Carolina.

Nolan Dennis (Top 40) has committed to Memphis. Lance Stephensen, Kenny Boynton, Xavier Henry all have Memphis in top 2 or 3...as do 15 of the top 25 Rivals recruits. John Wall has Memphis as leading. Joe Jackson is a Memphis lock. Memphis is national/elite; ut is regional with a diretional school coach.
Posted by BigOrangeVol on July 4, 2008 at 1:03 p.m. (Suggest removal)
...and yet that directional school coach and his team of regional players has beaten the nationally elite Memphis State school two years in a row by a combined 22 points. How is such a thing even remotely possible? That seems to be a really hard pill for the fans of the Arkansas east/Mississippi north school to swallow. Actually it seems to be rotting your insides out. Jealousy, envy and insecurity are serious hazards to your health Mempho folks. Get over yourselves!

Tiger High may not be noted for anything else, but they are tough to beat for Memphis players. At least they are not tough to beat on the court.

Tiger High still has more history and tradition in regard to college basketball. Since Ernie and Bernie we have had little to cheer about and nothing close to tradition. Bruce is in the neighborhood, but is years from knoxking on the door.

Hall could be a academic liability, that is supposedly the real reason that he transfered last year. Not that he is not smart, but has a work ethic problem. He is a decent player, but I honestly like Marlon Brown (who is also the football recruit) better. I have watched both play (not that I am an expert by any means) and I just like the way that he plays over Hall.
As for Memphis, I am not sure what they are going to do now that there TV time is sure to decrease. The Memphis Police Chief has cut ties with the show the First 48, so we are not going to get as any Tiger highlights now...so sad!

If you ut vol dolls hate Memphis so much, why are you always trying to compare yourself to them? The class of 2009 looks to be a vintage year for the Tigers, how are you boys making out?

itsme. In an ESPN posting out today, John Wall did not even have Memphis listed. Many recruiting experts however have it down to Memphis and Kentucky for his services with a slight lean towards Kentucky.
I think his will be one of the dramatic recruiting events for this year and he will most likely join Daniel Orton at Kentucky in the end. Of course if I knew everything...I would be buying lottery tickets :-)

Dennis is a decent player, not great. Tigers guard heavy no inside presence.

Yeah, you are right Mike, we have not had many players out of Memphis, but then again, over the past few years, how many has Memphis had out of Memphis? Andre Allen is about your most credible answer. Pierre Niles is only famous for punching a UAB student. Most of the Memphis kids have chosen to bolt from the state all together.
Last time I checked, it really did not seem to matter as both teams have done well with talent from outside the state. I have actually seen what that Final Four Shirt looks like, but the real question is... Have you seen what the National Champion t-shirt looks like?
As far as comparisons go, I do not really think that UT fans compare our programs as much as they compare the players between the two programs because both team recruit the same type of athletes and play similar styles of basketball. Its funny that we are a "Regional" program since we have had players from nevada, california, michigan, and washington d.c. (probably more) come to be VOLS over the past 5 years. Not to mention the one or two this year that chose the VOLS over the tigers.

We/I weren't the one's that started comparing UT to Memphis State! We/I weren't the ones that went to the Memphis State website to post smack. All I did was simply respond to a Mud City fan that wanted to stir the pot.
As far as recruiting and rankings are concerned...we're making out just fine thank you. Rivals has Memphis State at #4 and UT at #7. Mempho has the number 6, 34, 47 & 80 kids and UT has numbers 5, 40, 53 & 68. Looks like a wash to me. As for the prior years...2007 saw Memphis State at #10 and UT was not in the Top 30; 2006 had UT at #6 and Memphis State at #23, 2005 saw Memphis State at #7 and UT wasn't in the Top 25. Looks to me like the recruiting rankings are pretty relative since UT won the last two meetings by a combined 22 points. UT wasn't ranked at all and MSU was ranked #16 when the Vols spanked them by 18 at TBA in 2006-2007. We'll see what happens at TBA on February 23rd at 9:00! I think that Smokey will be eating Mike’s lunch again for three in a row.
Overrated? When your are ranked #2 and beat the #1 ranked team at their home what normally happens in the rankings? DUH! I'd say the team that was overrated is the one that spent most of the season ranked #1 then gagged in front of the entire World on primetime TV with the National Championship in the bag only to leave with their tiger tales tucked tightly between their legs. Just my opinion. You were, are and still smell like #2.
Now all you Tiger High kiddies go away or I will taunt you a third time.

Bricker,
they're proving our point, and the fact that we beat them time and time again really gets under their skin; not least of which was their super home court winning streak, undefeated team through February, and #1 ranking when we came in and "stole" it from them...I didn't ask them to come here, they keep coming, and it's a sad attempt to try to justify the superiority over us...ouch
Memphis fans, do you know how much the Carolina vs. Duke rivalry means to both teams? If neither of them win the NC, they have bragging rights if they pull off the 2 wins b/w cameron and The dean dome (just 8 miles down NC route 15-501). So don't try and play down your little man sydrome towards UT, like you didn't care that your home win streak got snapped by the team across the state...it is real, and the fact that "your sport" is being cramped on by big old tax funded UT simply makes your skin crawl...GOOD OLE ROCKY TOP!
Go back to your site and talk to some UAB fans about how you'll miss going down there and picking fights...

ALL of the REALLY GREAT players leave MemPiss anyway! Chasing what's left isn't worth the trouble! Do you not understand BP has brought BETTER players in from VA, MICH, CAL, NY, IND, IL, GA and KY!!!!???? MemPiss wants to claim national/elitism but they KNOW they play in a LOW mid-major conference, have a proven cheater for a coach, can't win the ONLY TWO big games they play each year, and will always be considered as part of the TN DEPT OF CORRECTIONS! NOBODY with BRAINS CARES ABOUT MEMPISS!!!! AND NOBODY WITH BRAINS WANTS 99% OF THE SO-CALLED "PLAYERS" FROM THAT CESSPOOL. The bottom line is that UT has continued to recruit the Memphis area heavily and losing Elliot Williams and Leslie McDonald has not bode well for Pearl, but then on the flip side Calipari has these kids in his backyard and they don't even consider Memphis either. I believe the High school Coaches in the Memphis area have had a major influence in this area also. From what many of my sources tell me Buckner was actually better than McDonald. I thought UT was recruiting him, but by the article above perhaps that is not true. Now if Ferrakon Hall decides to attend out of State one has to wonder why more Memphis kids not only don't want play at Memphis, but they aren't interested in playing for UT. Stay tune as there is more talent coming out of Memphis and the huge question will be will any of them stay and play within the State.

Funny to me how the Tigger fans like to visit this site and I haven't seen a Vol fan post on a Tiger article in the CA in a long time. That should tell you who's obsessed with what the other program is doing and which fan base could care less.
Understand this. Unless you're in the SEC, we really don't care what you're doing or who you're signing. Memphis is just another non-conference game and is only relevant the day we play you. (And you should consider yourselves lucky that Hamilton schedules you.) Past that date, 99% of us lose interest.
You still have that time out to call should you need it.
Cancel this series.

We have a really good chance to land Marlon Brown out of Memphis. He is a football first player, but like I mentioned earlier, after watching he and Hall play, I really believe that Marlon is the better talent. Hall is always listed up there because they of his "potential" but he has yet to capitalize on it even in high school. In Hall's defense though, I will say that he is probably a projected 3 player in college and he has mostly played 4 and 5 in high school. I think that Marlon is undervalued as a basketball player because he is so highly coveted as a football player. The one thing that is really helping UT is that Bruce is recruiting him along with Fulmer where a lot of schools are just sending the football coach in and telling him that the basketball coach is on board.
I sometimes wonder if the fierce recruiting battles that Pearl and Calipari have already gone through in just a few years have somewhat lead to some of the Memphis area kids going else where. Obviously, UNC and Duke had great reputations and history on their sides in getting Williams and McDonald (just a note that UT has traditionally had a hard time getting kids out of McDonald's school Briarcrest in every sport for whatever reason), but the battle lines between Memphis and UT got so fierce that maybe going somewhere else was just easier that going to either of the TN schools.
Posted by budrhon on July 5, 2008 at 3:03 p.m. (Suggest removal)
UTCHRIS I agree with you on the Brown situation. UT's tradition in Football is the selling point along with Pearl's program for him. Still he is being heavily recruited by a few schools out west (USC & UCLA). I still believe the selling point to some of these kids when it comes to choosing between UT or Memphis is their High school coach. Your reason is a valid one also. It would be interesting if the Memphis area High school coaches were polled to provide anonymous opinion on what they see in the two schools programs we might be suprised. For Pearl he has to continue to get the inside track with the area coaches in Memphis. For Calipari he doesn't really care like he once did because he has shown he can recruit nationally, which is something other Memphis coaches (Finch,Price,Kirk) could not do. They were highly dependent on Memphis area and surrounding counties and bordering States recruits.
Posted by utchris2003 on July 5, 2008 at 3:18 p.m. (Suggest removal)
I know a bunch of coaches around town and a lot of them seem to really like Pearl. I have been told that Williams and McDonald really liked him as well, but they just chose other schools. I know that Williams is a really strong academic kid and that played a big part in him going to Duke (not that UT does not have good academics).
My experiences which include seeing Pearl around the Memphis scene and talking to coaches around here are that Pearl hits the recruiting trail as hard as anyone. Tennessee is a wonderful place (I enjoyed my four years there) and Pearl is a good coach, but we have to realize that it is not for everyone. Your simply not going to get every recruit you want. Tennessee is a school and athletic department with National Exposure so it is not hard to find recruits from across the country.

Colliervol... I too hope the series is cancelled. The Memphis game is all you vols talk about. The SEC is all hype. Outside of the great accomplishments in the NCAA tournament Florida made for two years, your conference has done nothing. Look at the nose dive all 5 of your teams did last year. OVER-RATED. And for the record, Conf-USA had a winning record against the SEC last year, head-to-head.
When Memphis can play the likes of Georgetown, Arizona, Syracuse, Gonzaga, Missouri, Oklahoma, UConn, Cincinnati, USC, Duke, UCLA, Texas, Kansas just to mention a few of the teams Memphis has played in the last three years, what makes you think Memphis needs Tennessee on its schedule? How much will Hamilton over-charge you for tickets to the Memphis game this year?
utchrissy the sissy... You said it, Bruce has been all over Memphis. So who has he signed? Bet all he has learned is where to go eat bbq! BTW Memphis has signed better players than Williams or McDonald. As long as UT doesn't get them, Calipari doesn't care. Just in case you missed it, Memphis has an elite program without local talent.

Memphis, best team in the state. Always has been more than likely always will be. Vol fans can imagine what they want about why we visit the site. Say what you please about the Tigers but you know in your heart that they are better than the vols. It hurts huh?
BigOrangeVol, since you are asking all the questions, here's a few for you. Can you tell me how the newly crowned number 1 team in the nation can go out and lose it's first game as number 1? (and you say Memphis choked) Can you tell me how a former number 1 team can be beaten by a lowly Ark. squad in your most important game to date at that point. Then can you tell me how you can struggle against a team named American in the NCAA tourney when things really count? Can you tell me why the vols struggle with a team called Butler? I do believe you are 1 and 1 against that powerhouse and almost 0 and 2. Such a nail biter in the tournament. I believe it went to overtime and you were beaten and eliminated by them once before. Can you tell me how the former number 1 team could be blown out by a mediocre Lousiville team that was blown out by North Car.? Seems you guys don't know when to turn it up a notch. You seem to turn it down when it really matters.
Also wondering how Texas could beat you so badly on a neutral court when Memphis blew them out in what was basically a home game for them. When they were giving it everything they had.
Just a few questions for you since you are asking questions. Oh also can you tell me why a team that has a record of 2 wins and 1 loss over another team with the last game being decided by 4 points can brag so much over 2-1 record? Just kinda shows there's not much to brag about.
Tigers... 2 straight elite 8's and last season to the national championship game. Tenn....err well... sweet 16 ....yet again.
SEC 6 teams in the tournament and 4 eliminated in their first game mostly against nobody teams. Only 1 team out of 6 won more than 1 game and that one team nearly lost everytime it played. You guys make fun of Conf. USA? I do believe Conf. USA teams could have roughed up the SEC last year. They couldn't have been any worse.

over i think i can explain a little. when it comes to losing after being voted #1 it come s down to this:scheduling. after playing a ring of games to get to that #1 ranking we were forced to play in a gym against a team that is notorious for knocking off #1 ranked opponents(ask florida and north carolina) and yet they did not dominate us only winning by three. that lowly arkansas team had 6 players 6'9" or taller and that was their game plan,to bang, and yet they did not dominate us only winning by two and due to the tornado forced to play in a gym wich all our fan base was not invited(see sec for refund on tickets).i did not see the team struggle against american as they won by fifteen and for butler they had previously beat us in the pre-season nit not ncaa. this was a team that won 30 games, ranked #10 in the country and still with our inner turmoil we still beat them.as for louisville they exposed us like arky did with the bigs. but our time is coming.

Overbloated, actually we have played eight Top 5 teams and twenty Top 25 teams in the last three years.
Here's something else to chew on:
SEC SOS
05-06: #4
06-07: #2
07-08: #4
C-USA SOS
05-06: #13
06-07: #11
07-08: #10
University of Tennessee RPI/SOS
05-06: 6/6
06-07: 12/5
07-08: 2/1
West Tennessee State Normal School RPI/SOS
05-06: 4/31
06-07: 8/75
07-08: 3/27
The other 11 members of C-USA had RPI average of 157 and SOS average of 122 last year.
The SEC (excluding UT) had an average RPI of 85 and SOS average of 53.5 last year.
And we aren't just two in a row over Tiger high but 7-2 if you want to go back to '96.
You forgot to mention the other elite powerhouses Memphis State played last year:
Tennessee Martin; Richmond; Arkansas St.; Austin Peay; Middle Tennessee State; Cincinnati; Siena and Pepperdine.
You do get credit for OU; UConn; USC; Georgetown; Gonzaga; AZ and UT. But the only teams on your schedule with an RPI higher than 18 were UT and G’town.

BigOrange why give all the stats on C-USA. I never said that those teams were great. All i've said is Memphis is. Don't even care about those other teams. They are as bad as most teams in the SEC.
You can give as many stats as you want but it doesn't change the fact that the Tigers were in the national championship game and beat some of the top teams in the country to get there. Not only beat but destoyed them. We do have UT to thank because that game let the steam out and after that the Tigers played more relaxed like they had earlier in the season. Without that game they may never have made it to the championship game. The Vols on the other hand struggled all the way. Look at your last 4 games. The games that meant the most. Ark in the SEC. American and Butler and then Louisville. The Vols did not play well in any of those games. Stats can't change it. I think even uncle Maze would agree with me on that.
Tigers in a blowout at TBA in Jan.

over i guess you can say we struggled with american and butler but i can say you struggled with miss st. and previously in the year with south. cal and uab. teams are not going to perform greatly on every given night. davidson beat georgetown and mighty kansas even "stuggled" with davidson. upsets happen. our time is coming. pearl will at least make the final four within three years if not a championship.jmo.

I agree Brownie we did struggle against those teams you named but they did get things together for the end of the season run (except for the last 2 minutes of the season). Vols went in the wrong direction at the end of the season. To me they played much better up to the Memphis game and after that they never seemed to be themselves.
We'll see about the Vols and final 4 within the next 3 years. I have my doubts until proven wrong. Should be a great season coming up. I'm ready for it now. Well, i'm anxious for Tenn/UCLA in football also. Yes, i'll be pulling for Tenn.

the tigers had a phenominal run. and i too can't wait til' the season(football and basketball)starts. there is no doubt the kansas',north cakalaki's and ucla's better watch out the state of tennessee has two, yes, two programs that are on their trails.

As much as it pains me to say... VU has a decent hoops program too. So make that three teams from our state that finished in the AP Top 20 last season. I don't think that anyone else can boast that!

Amusing..in a quaint way...is the only apt description of the rantings of the uthug fans. Lacking in intellectual capacity to compete in even a modest debate such as this, the utenns (UT is in Austin)...are reduced to spewing the most debased and base tripe. Brownsfool, Collierfool, and "the vol" (obviously the lead fool)...sound like the kids who never were chosen in playground games. It was good training for their team..which will never be recognized in elite circles. Amusing.
