Former Tennessee linebacker Carl Zander is one of 75 players named to the 75th Anniversary All-Sun Bowl Team, which commemorates the association's diamond anniversary.
The Brut Sun Bowl is the second oldest bowl game and has had more different programs (75) compete in the game than any other bowl.
Tennessee's lone appearance in the bowl ended in a 28-27 loss to Maryland in 1984. Afterwards, Zander earned the Jimmy Rogers Jr. Most Valuable Lineman award for recording 24 tackles in the game.
Zander went on to spend eight years with the NFL's Cincinnati Bengals, including a start in Super Bowl XXIII.

Congratulations Carl! Fron one Jersey Boy (Randolph) to another! Way to go!

Just hearing Carl's name, and those of other stalwart players from years gone by, always reminds me of just how deep Tennessee's football tradition runs. There are players who we loved for their contributions at the time but who sometimes pass from the forefront of our memory. Marion Hobby is another one, and Chip Kell, and David Moon, George Cafego and David Graham . . . we love to complain, but we love our Vols! How many days until "Football Time In Tennessee!" ? Ooops, that reminds me, John Ward, what an integral part of that history he is.

That was one of the most exciting bowls even though we lost. I remember the 100 yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the 2nd half.

We were driving for the go-ahead score when T-Rob scrambled, holding the ball like a box of cereal, and needlessly fumbled. Game over.
Carl Zander and Kelly Ziegler were two different LB's, right? How often do you get two guys whose names start with Z? Sounds like something Madden would talk about...

Bigger, that was one of the few mistakes Tony made in his UT career.
All-Sun Bowl team. What a waste of newsprint nd bandwidth. Who cares?

BillVol--I care when one of our Alumni receives an award that brings honor to my beloved school. I don't understand so called fans like you who make such statements. Need_2_know cares, tngeoff cares, and also bricker865, and Bigger_Al cares. So what is your problem?

I personally love stories about former Vol greats. It rekindles some VERY positive memories. Especially when they are receiving awards for their careers. Post one any day, any time and in any volume. Good stuff KNS!
Well said volfan73120. It is one of the issues where you see who really is and who really isn't in sync with what Tennessee Football has been about. Great tradition and great players. No arguing...no name calling...just great memories.
