The Tennessee players were the big attraction, but East Tennessee State's Courtney Pigram was the big star in the Pilot Rocky Top League title game Wednesday night.
Pigram scored a game-high 45 points and hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 20.5 seconds left as HT Group capped a perfect league schedule with a 133-126 win over Ray's ESG at Bearden High School.
A crowd approaching 3,000 packed the gym and more than 100 more were turned away at the doors as the league finished its second season in spectacular fashion.
Pigram, a former Atlantic Sun Player of the Year, said he appreciated the competition and exposure of the PRTL.
"I considered it an honor to play in the league against great competition,'' Pigram said. "This was a challenge, and it put me at another level.''
Pigram hit two buzzer-beaters, in regulation and overtime, to lift HT Group to a win over Ray's earlier this season.
This time the game-winner came after Bobby Maze hit two free throws for Ray's to tie the game at 124-124.
"Courtney came off a screen and hit another shot from 40 feet,'' said Maze, who had 39 points and seven assists. "Of course I'm mad we didn't win, but both teams played well. This is for the fans and the kids, and I'm glad I was able to give them a sneak peek of what's to come.''
Maze looked to tie the game, but Pigram got a hand on his shot leading to a Tyler Smith (37 points, 12 rebounds, seven assists)) transition basket that made it 129-124 with 13.5 seconds left.
Smith was locked in a physical battle with Scotty Hopson (36 points, nine rebounds) throughout the night.
"It was very intense, and Tyler was very tough,'' said Hopson, who had a deep scratch bleeding on his left arm. "He got the best of the situation this time, but we've got some 5-on-5 left in practice, and we'll see what happens there.''
Pigram said he knew what was going to happen next for him after Wednesday's game.
"I'm going to go back to Johnson City tonight and take some more shots in the gym,'' said Pigram, who hit 11 of 12 3-pointers in the teams' first matchup. "A lot of the guys were saying my shots the last time were just luck. I had to show them it wasn't luck.''
Incoming UT freshman Daniel West led HT Group with 10 assists and scored 14 points, and ETSU's Greg Hamlin had 14 points and eight rebounds.
"Courtney is a great player who makes everyone around him better,'' said Hamlin, a transfer from Mott (Mich.) Community College. "I see him do this every day in practice.''
Hamlin said the key to HT Group's undefeated record was its teamwork and drive.
"The Tennessee players on our team played well with us,'' Hamlin said. "We played all our games serious, and everybody wanted to win every game.''

This is what a lot of people in the East Tennessee / SW VA area have seen from Pigram the last few years. This shows you what he can do with a full team around him. I'm excited to see him bring an ASUN title home to Johnson City in 09.

Looks like Scotty and Tyler played each other even. That is good news. Looks like either Maze has a solid game, or West is shaky on defense.
Good to see Williams scoring.

It wasn't just West on BMaze, Pigram and another guy did most of the work until they started doubling him down the stretch. Don't matter who is on him, one guy isn't going to stop "The Solution". He finishes around the rim better than anyone we have had in years.

Bobby Maze must be the real deal. It's good to hear that he can finish around the rim. We haven't had a point do that consistently, except for BJ,very often.
If Scotty Hopson as a freshman can hang with Tyler Smith, matching him in points and rebounds, that certainly is a good sign. Tyler may be the premiere player in the SEC this year.

I was there for the first half last night. Bobby Maze is the real deal. He sees the whole court, he dishes, and has moves to the basket we have not seen in a long while.
When Scotty was on Tyler it was basically no match. Tyler had much more intensity than Scotty and was more physical. Scotty brings a lot of moves and will give us a shooting guard that crashes the boards for rebounding dunks.

almost wish the pigram kid would transfer.

Having a gaurd that is an actual threat to score takes the team to another level. Not to mention he makes free throws. This team could realistically be a final 4 team, moreso than last years team.

What is a pigram?

Thank God this joke is over! Now maybe our guys can get to work on getting better instead of this BS street ball league crap.
Volfan_n_nc - you need a dose of reality. NOBODY has seen these kind of stats from Pigram EVER. If they had, he wouldn't be at ETSU moron!
alfrizzed - are you serious? Yeah they played even but the trouble is neither one played ANY defense! THAT IS NOT A GOOD SIGN!
As for everyone's excitement with Maze - well, I'll be nice - just calm down and let's see what happens when he actually plays against someone for real. No doubt he's a talented player but most of the players in this league are either has beens or never were's. And he still hasn't qualified so.......time will tell.

wvvol;
great post. I think Tyler may be able to help Scotty quite a bit. Tyler is now 'a man' while Scotty is still pretty raw.
Both are country kids, so you hope they get along well.
You know last year Bruce really pushed the half-court D?? You would think this year he'll do it even moreso with the depth he has.

thevol;
players get a lot more out of this than you might think.
yeah, it is basically organized pickup, but it is against some other guys who know how to play team ball.
you are well witihn your right to slam it as bS, but personally I think it's great for college bball and the program.

Why wouldn't Tyler be ahead of Scotty? Scotty is still young and learning. Too much is being expected of him.

I thought it was great. My kids got some autographs and pictures with the players and the games were pretty exciting to boot. When did Damon Johnson play for UT? I don't remember him. It was great to see some local players that didn't come to UT play also. Tony White Jr and Pegram are good players. If you didn't get to go to any of the games you are going to be amazed when you see Brian Williams. He has changed fat to muscle and seems much more aggressive this year. Maze broke a few defenders off at the knees and has a nice shot with some range. Expect a few growing pains early but fireworks from this team later.

Williams played almost the whole game in the heat also. His conditioning is pretty good.

mparker - get real man! EXACTLY what do they get out of it????? Other than some feel good inflated self-esteem??? Other than the TN guys and maybe one or two other like Pigram there is NO talent in this "league" so they aren't playing against or with ANYBODY that will make them better. Everything they supposedly get in this deal they could get - plus some - playing intra-squad at TBA. This is nothing but a PR league and I just wish everyone would admit it.
as for BWilliams - tell it to Marcy_Girl - he'll be excited that his IMPACT PLAYER from last year has done well against D-II guys.

creepy, damon johnson played for kevin o' neal 2 years. he was similar ti dane bradshaw, in that he was an undersized power forward who played with a lot of hustle and heart.
