XM Satellite Radio to broadcast SEC games

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Football and men’s basketball games for all 12 Southeastern Conference schools will be broadcast on XM Satellite Radio starting in the fall.

The company announced Tuesday that it has added Alabama, Auburn, Florida and Vanderbilt to its lineup. The SEC had signed a five-year deal to let XM carry the games for seven schools starting last year and was already set to start carrying South Carolina games this season.

XM plans to carry ever SEC football game and most men’s regular season basketball games. It will also broadcast key women’s basketball and baseball games during the regular season.

XM also airs the SEC football championship game and the tournaments for baseball and men’s and women’s basketball.

I hope they devote more than 3 channels to the SEC. Last year it was frustrating when they would skip the Vols in favor of State, UK, etc.

Sooooo, how does this work? Will ALL TN games be broadcast?

Posted by khelton657 on July 1, 2008 at 2 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Shoot..I bought Sirius instead of XM just so I could get the UT games....

Posted by dfreeman on July 1, 2008 at 2:06 p.m. (Suggest removal)

TommyJack - yes it does! We listened to several UT games on XM last year!

volaboard - Yes it was indeed!

Me too khelton! I bought two Sirius radios two years ago when Sirius carried the SEC games and last year Hamilton switched the games to XM! Hamilton usually responds to reasonable emails; however, he did not respond to my email questioning why the switch! Don't understand why he did no respond by offering me free XM radios ... but he didn't!!!!

Maybe the Sirius/XM merger will have been completed by then.

but we still have to listen to Kesling and its still the same old pathetic play calling , the days of John Ward.

I posted this on another thread that got dropped, but I wanted to make sure everyone saw it.

Again, thanks for all the thoughts and prayers yesterday.I need to get back to doing the things I enjoy so here is a few updates.

Tony Straughter a 6'1 215lb LB Milledgeville (GA) Georgia Military College(JUCO), has named Tennessee in his top 3 along w/ Ole Miss and south Carolina.Academics is the reason he is in JUCO, but is now on pace to graduate in December. He racked up 40tkls last yr w/ an impressive 18tfl.

We have also made the top 5 for 6'3 295lb 4* DT Isaac Holmes of Hoboken (NJ) .He came close to giving Maryland the nod ,but there are 2 schools he wants to see 1st, Oklahoma and Tennessee. This is good b/c he hasn't seen anything like what UT has to offer.Maryland will be the toughest to beat

6'4 260lb DE/DT Will Hill has also named UT in his top 3 along w/ Maryland and Virginia. He is from VA , but being a border state, that shouldn't hurt us.

I hope we get back to the days when maybe 1 game a year wasn't televised.Like homecoming.

Got my XM last year!! GO VOLS!!

Posted by General_Watermelon on July 1, 2008 at 3:04 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I got SIRUS for the primary purpose of getting SEC games. Now it is shifting to XM?

Posted by KingsportVol on July 1, 2008 at 3:09 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I would rather watch Fulmer and Chief mud wrestle than have to listen to a game on the radio. John Ward can't be relpaced period. If it isn't on TV I will just tune in to GoVolsXtra.

Fritter,

Sadly that is the case. I made the switch from XM to Sirius almost two years ago mostly for the Tennessee Football and Basketball broadcast. Then last year, Tennessee went back to XM. If the FCC would quit dragging their feet and approve the Sirius/XM merger, then it will not matter as they will offer a package where you can get the channels of both companies for about 3 dollars more per month than the subscription to just one of the companies. That will mean that you will get access to most of the major conference football and basketball along with all the pro sports.

don't forget the vol fans out of state. i just bought a new ride in houston with an XM radio. bring on the SEC

Posted by LongtimeVol on July 1, 2008 at 5:52 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Like others, I bought a satellite radio two years ago and chose SIRIUS because they carried Tennessee sports. Then just before the season started last year Hamilton announced the switch to XM.

Posted by utchris2003 on July 1, 2008 at 5:54 p.m. (Suggest removal)

TJ,

Many of the models are portable and offer "home" or "office" docking stations so that you can take them with you from the car. Some are even truly portable and offer a Ipod like feel so that you can listen to them without the dock and separate antenna. They also make some that are for home use only.

disappointed that I bought sirius for sec sports 3 years ago or so. Well, I've got radio margaritaville.

Posted by Volman42 on July 1, 2008 at 10:23 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Could XM hire someone to broadcast VOL football so we don't have to endure another season listening to Kessling?

Posted by LouisVol on July 1, 2008 at 10:54 p.m. (Suggest removal)

SIRIUS and XM will probably be one company by the end of the year. We'll have to see how they merge the companies.

With MLB they air all games, but only using the hometeam's broadcast. I'm not sure if they do the same with college sports. Listening to Larry Munson do the Georgia-Tennessee game may be enough for me to wait until Sunday to read it in the paper.

Kesling's great and all, but he looks more like a TV guy than he sounds as a radio guy.

I tell ya, I've got more genuine excitement in my voice than Kesling and I'd love to call the ball games. Hell, people tell me all the time that I need to be on radio. Where do I apply?

Wonder if Ward would waste his time to teach me...

Posted by GreerVol22 on July 2, 2008 at 9:07 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Most of the good radio guys have all migrated to the metro pro markets and whats left is converted TV guys like Kesling. He's alright, just no style. John Ward had style...he painted me a picture, drew me a seat, sat me down in it as if i had just bought a ticket. Its just a shame that kids in Tennessee radio markets are not getting the same picture of BO football that I had growing up.

Posted by TommyJack on July 2, 2008 at 9:47 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Greer: Agree. Don't see Kesling improving any after these several years. He DOES, IMO, do a credible job with BB.

Posted by marc_ash on July 2, 2008 at 10:18 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Well, might not be a bad gig for Vol fan's. Listening to the radio is much cheaper than doing pay per view and also much cheaper than actually going to the game with today's gas prices.

Would be a no brainer if John Ward was still announcing. Oh, the memories.

Posted by marc_ash on July 2, 2008 at 10:28 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Was listening to a replay of the 98 Florida game yesterday with John Ward announcing. A call JW made that still gives me chills listening to it.....Pearless (at the 7 minute 37 second mark of the 3rd Q) catching a TD pass in the corner of the end zone....

"And Peerless Price is there to grab it in the end zone...did he grab it? HE GRABBED IT! Where did he grab it? In the end zone!'

hahahaha, give him 6 John!
