I just read Higgins' "Tigers-Vols matchups: the frontcourts" and almost blew coffee out my nose! The real howler was where he wrote, "Memphis probably can't match Tennessee's physical inside play"! I am as impressed as anyone with Chism's recently improved inside play and Duke's hustle and energy, but, IMHO, if we just manage to stay even in most measures of inside play, we win going away. I know that Memphis likes to run and they have some great perimeter players, but to me the thing that gives them the biggest advantage is their power and depth on the inside. If Chism gets in early foul trouble, our chances of winning take a BIG hit. Memphis could lose almost any two of their big men and still out-man us significantly inside.

Neither TN nor Memphis is very physical down low to be honest....Or let me say it like this...to be as big as those dudes are down low, they could be a hellava lot more physical...It may look that way on TV but there are a ton of teams out there that are the Truth down low....(NC, Georgetown) But the Vols win this one as long as the zebras dont get too involved. We all know that if Chris or hell, even Jujaun starts droppin bombs, the sh*t is over like that....Memphis can't shoot from the outside for one, but their guards are long like LSU so that may create a lil headache but our guards can shoot over that sh*t...I'm telling you, if the Vols shoot like they usuaually do, its a wrap...also if they stay outta foul trouble down low, its a wrap ...Hell its a wrap already....the TX loss was due to early experimentation and the Kentucky loss due to big heads and was the wake up game for Chris Lofton, plus gave Bruce some fuel as if he needed any, but Memphis is gonna try and run with the Vols and thats why they LOOOOOSE....they might keep up the tempo, but their shots will eventually start to falter, and thats if they are shooting a good percentage from the jump. That's what has happened in most of their previous games...you can visually see the opponent wear down in the final minutes....too much pressure on Memphis to win....

As I said on the other thread, QCVol, I surely HOPE you are right. I surely like the way you think! Memphis has had some bad shooting nights, but so have we, and they have had some good ones, too. They may not be any more physical than we are but we have been vulnerable to offensive rebounds against everybody and that is an area in which they excel. The worse their shooting is, the more offensive rebound opportunities there are. They are also better shot-blockers than we are and they have MORE big guys than we do. Besides, they DID beat G'town. I'm not trying to rain on your parade, and I do think the game is winnable for us, but...well, let's just say I hope the team has, and PLAYS with, more confidence than I have!

The teams are really pretty similar statistically. The only difference is Tennessee has played a much harder schedule. With that said, that does not mean UT will win. In fact, emotion and home court advanatage goes a long ways in these kind of games just as it did when the Vols embarrassed Memphis last season. Tennessee used to beat better Kentucky teams in Knoxville in the old Stokely building as an example and I'm not saying that Memphis is not as good by a long stretch. I think Memphis has the edge given the home court advantage, the revenge factor, and all the hype.

johnlg, you said "Memphis could lose almost any two of their big men and still out-man us significantly inside." How can that be since they probably will only have two decent big men available (Dorsey and Dozier). Niles weighs about 450 lbs and would last about a minute running with Tennessee. (Our large freshman, Williams, has played better than Niles has ever shown.) Taggart broke his nose and has a strained MCL and bruised knee and is questionable for Saturday night. If they lose either Dorsey or Dozier to foul trouble, they will have problems.
