So much for overlooking Auburn.
Tennessee led by as many as 31 points en route to an 89-70 victory over the Tigers Wednesday night before a crowd of 20,645 at Thompson-Boling Arena.
The No. 2 Vols (24-2, 11-1 SEC) move on to play at No. 1-ranked Memphis on Saturday (TV: ESPN, 9 p.m.). Memphis improved to 26-0 Wednesday with a 97-71 win at Tulane.
As for the Auburn Tigers (13-11, 3-8), they left Knoxville impressed by what they saw from the Vols.
“They’re better than anybody we’ve played,’’ Auburn coach Jeff Lebo said. “Their explosiveness offensively is what separates them. They have so many different players that can go out and score 18, 19 or 20 points.’’
It was UT’s 30th consecutive win at home.
Sophomore point guard Ramar Smith became the sixth different player to lead the Vols in scoring this season, pouring in a season-high 19 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the floor and 6-of-7 shooting from the free throw line.
“It was just about finishing at the basket, that’s what it comes down to,’’ said Smith, who hadn’t scored in double figures since a Jan. 22 loss to Kentucky when he had 10. “It helps to score, but I’ve been doing other things to help my team win. It’s not all about scoring.’’
Senior Frank Tolbert scored a game-high 24 for the undermanned and out-sized Tigers, and fellow senior Quan Prowell had 21.
Tennessee’s Tyler Smith had 13 points and 13 rebounds for his second consecutive double-double, and seniors Chris Lofton and JaJuan Smith scored 12 points apiece for the Vols.
“A lot of people thought we’d overlook them (Auburn),’’ JaJuan Smith said. “But we went down there last year and got punked. They hit us in the mouth.’’
This time, UT hit on all cylinders to avenge last season’s 83-80 loss.
The Vols used an 11-0 run to go up 31-15 on a Josh Tabb basket at the 7:53 mark of the first half, and the Tigers never got back within double figures.
“You could see that our team was ready to play,’’ UT coach Bruce Pearl said. “We took our opponent very seriously, and we took care of business.’’
Pearl did so by using a business-as-usual approach in the days leading up to the game.
“I’m not going to be any different in our preparation for Memphis,’’ Pearl said. “It’s not going to be, ‘Coach is a little on edge for Memphis.’ Coach is always on edge. I don’t want them to see a different me.’’
And Pearl doesn’t want his players acting any differently, either.
After two Knoxville television stations had been ordered not to ask questions about Memphis this week, Pearl made it clear to the UT sports information staff that media was free to ask whatever questions they wanted. All players were made available each day and practices were open.
Dane Bradshaw, who played for the Vols last season, called the News Sentinel on Wednesday from Europe, where he’s playing professional basketball, and said it’s important the team stays loose.
“It’s amazing what’s going on and the hype around the Memphis game,’’ Bradshaw said. “The guys need to enjoy it as much as they can. The rivalry will always be there, but I’m not sure there will be another No. 1 versus No. 2 matchup with Memphis.’’
Lofton, who moved into sole possession of fifth place on the NCAA’s all-time 3-point list with 402, said he appreciates the challenge ahead.
“I’ve never played in a game like this before,’’ Lofton said. “I never thought it was going to be like this. We’re having fun with the way the team is playing.’’
Like Lofton, Tyler Smith is anxious for the Memphis game.
“We want to hurry up and get to that game,’’ he said. “It’s going to be fun, but if we win or lose, it won’t make or end our season.”

I think the Jordan "senior night" thing was great! I was at the game and it was a funny game. I told my son about midway through the 2nd half that it just didn't seem like UT should be up 25. Anyway, still #2 and working on being #1, look forward to saturday

We need to find a way to SHUT THE DOOR. Our second half performances when we're up by a bunch seem to melt. Just like tonite. And, just like last year, when we were up by 16 against Ohio State in the Dance. The Number 2 Team in the land plays two halves - not just one. Let's Go for Two.

Sorry but we did play the second half. We expanded the lead and kept it even until we put in the backups. Auburn then proceeded to nail abunch of 3's (I don't know, I had left expecting garbage time). We put the starters back in and the gap stopped shrinking. So quit griping....

we played two halves. the subs didn't play their share. we were up 31 late in the second half and the subs let it get mildly close again. and then, when bruce brought back in the calvary, we easily closed it. i haven't been as worried about that lately

This is a great time to be a TENNESSEE VOL..

Leads evaporate fast with walkons Childress, Howell and Pearl in the game. Hopefully those three will not play against Memphis. Can't risk blowing a 30 point lead in that one.

If the game on Saturday night was still tied after 2 OT's, I think they should put Pearl and Cal at center court and let them fight in a death match. Barring Cal getting a firearm or shank from Dorsey, I say Pearl would win going away.
Pearl is quickly approaching Chuck Norris iconic status. He would eat Kevin O'Niel as a snack.

yabadababble - There is ONE particular ref that loves to watch himself in the highlights section of SportsCenter!! If he is calling the game you can bet it will be ugly... book that!! Otherwise the rest are just fine!! That's what PD was referring to! His name escapes me at the moment, but he did a "heck" of a job making sure his face was on the TV, when he T'd up Prince 400 times in a row! I believe his name was Valentine though not for sure. It's not just UT either, because this guy isn't allowed to call Big Ten games anymore! Rightfully so as well!

I thought I was half asleep but I wasn't when I was listening to ESPN 2 discuss UT and Memphis.
They had UT's record of 22-3. Last I check UT has only two losses- KY and Texas. The biggest game of the year thus far and they make that kind of mistake? Did anyone catch that about 20 minutes ago on college gamenight? Unbelievable!!

Just jumped over to the Commercial Appeal. Tiger fans are pissed because a local ESPN Radio guy (who usually seems to favor Memphis) picked the Vols. His reasoning: Bruce is a better coach that Calipari.
Also, there is a guy on there claiming that he is a UT Alum but is rooting for the Tigers to Kick our a**. Is there a way we can revoke his diploma on the account of treason?

There appears to be some folks that fell asleep - UT did not play 2 halves tonite - more like 1 and a half. Tennessee LOST the second half by 7 points. Great win, but need to expand leads, not watch them deteriorate. Subs are NO excuse. Tapeworm's assessment is legit.

No, utchris, as long as you asked, Memphis doesn't have a football team to speak of. I never said they did. Basketball is a different story, as you'll know after Saturday. (Consider UT's win last year an aberration, just as the times Memphis has beaten UT in football was an aberration.)
As for the UT joke in the CA, the News Sentinel really didn't do justice by not giving the full story. The UT joke was only half the column; the other half, for the benfit of UT fans, was a Memphis joke that got equal treatment and was equally lame.
Posted by VOLS85 on February 21, 2008 at 12:23 a.m. (Suggest removal)
This whole idea of complaining that we only played one half or a 1.5 or whatever is just a joke. If we wanted to, we could have kept the starters in and mopped up, but we were trying to give our starters rest (to get ready for some game coming up, can't remember when it is or who is playing) and take away the risk of injury.
Can you imagine how much Pearl would have been chastised if any of our starters suffered an injury when we were up 30?!
Some people here need to get off their high horse, get a grasp and realize that Bruce had his reasons tonight and he knows much better than you.

Glenn,
aberrations are close wins, getting owned by 18 is far different. Go back to your blogging site and chit chat on how your sports programs haven't won anything of significance in recent history and let the game on saturday speak for itself. Enjoy the C-USA, because you're not welcome in our conference.
GO VOLS!

Really. I don't know how many people I heard in the stands tonight that must not know anything about basketball. People complaining that we were only up by 25. Some of you Johnny come lately fans must not remember what basketball was like at UT 10 years ago. On the other hand some of you guys forget that we had some pretty good teams with Brandon Wharton, CJ Black, and others. So you see that it won't be like this every year. Appreciate that this is a special time in TN b-ball history. Ernie and Bernie never went this far, but to hear my dad talk about them; you would think they both averaged forty points a game. I am not saying that we can't keep this level of competition up, but it will not be easy. We may lose 3 or 4 starters before next year.
Posted by GlennMaxwell on February 21, 2008 at 12:30 a.m. (Suggest removal)
LOL.
You might wanna hold the "getting owned" talk until we see how Saturday turns out. Don't get too cocky for a school where they didn't know what a basketball was until the past couple years (at least not the men). See ya in Memphis Saturday.

No, I definitely read the whole article. I am a Memphian and I read the CA on a daily basis. Most of them were your typical insert rival school here garden variety. Some were just dreadful.
When you speak of the "Times" that Memphis beat UT in football, you will need to need to make that singular as in "The one time that Memphis beat UT." Great article that CBS sportline has on Tommy West trying to get in on Tyrelle Pryor since he has not committed. It is common knowledge that he does not even recruit the top kids in Memphis (much less gets them), so what the heck is he thinking.

keys to the game; wayne, duke, tyler: if those guys can board, stay out of foul trouble, and score to their averages, it should be a good game.

Glenn,
I'm pretty sure losing by 18 indicates getting owned (but please tell me what it means if I'm wrong)...Also, I'm obviously upset that we weren't a powerhouse basketball program four years ago...as if that has any influence on how significant our program is now...if you want to go there, Memphis hasn't exerted too much dominance before coach Cal, which is surprising because C-USA and GWMC are trash conferences.
Memphis is a great team, but you go chit chat on how Dozier hits his girlfriend, and your reserves pick fights with fans, and we'll talk about dismantling Auburn...

I was hoping that the Alumni Chapter would have a good spot to watch the game on Sat. I am not sure that Jillians will be ideal be parking will be a nightmare with the game only blocks away. Note that this will be the 40th time Tennessee has played Memphis in football or basketball, and as far as I can remember, the FIRST time ever that the game has meant as much to Tennessee as it means to Memphis.
Wait, I just remembered:
GREAT MOMENTS IN TENNESSEE VS. MEMPHIS HISTORY
A trip to an insignificant bowl game was on the line in November 1974 at Knoxville.
In 1982, the Memphis band played about 15 minutes during halftime at UT's homecoming, way over its alloted time. The UT band had to cut short its halftime show, and the presentation of Homecoming Week awards had to be cut short. I thought that was sort of funny, actually.
Well, that's about it for great moments I can remember in the history of the UT - Memphis rivalry.

I love it. Everyone is picking Memphis. Ive heard people saying we cant run with Memphis. And the only way we can stay in the game is by fouling them early and often. ROFLMAO thats funnier than Richard Pryor back in his prime. It feels alot like the Super Bowl in that everyone picks the perfect record. But alls that does is makes the underdog mad. Just one Question, who ran who out the building last year with an 11 lose team?

I feel honored to have the two best teams in the nation in the Great State of Tennessee. I can't be the only one tired of Duke and NC being the dominant pair for so long. Of course I'm pulling for my Vols this Saturday but I want to go on record as saying, win or lose, unless the refs give the game away, right this very minute, I couldn't be prouder of our Vols. Go Big Orange!!

I just hope we don't struggle on the road like we have all season. We have found a way to win most of them but if we are not sharp we could wind up like we did at KY. USC was our only dominating road win, and they are terrible.
Keep the foot on the gas every play. Defense will win this game.

Its great to see the #1 & #2 teams come from Tennessee instead of North Carolina for a change. The exposure this game gets will tempt other highly touted kids to the state to play. I wonder if the $10,000 tickets were sold? I hope Tennessee wins!

Good game last night though the bench play was sloppy. Once UT went on that first half run, the outcome was never in doubt. Nice to see the ball go inside more, I know it was Auburn but a nice change to see Wayne down on the blocks. Tyler Smith just gets better and better, glad he is looking to score more inside the paint.
Saturday night starts a tough 14-day run for UT: Memphis, Vandy, Kentucky and Florida, 3 of these on the road. Memphis generates a lot of flash and noise but the other 3 are in-conference. This will be a great challenge for a great team.
Go VOLS!

Even though this game is not make-or-break, it is certainly the biggest game in UT basketball history. Hopefully bigger games to come this year!
I will date myself, but does anyone remember the final game of the SEC tournament the first year they started playing it again? It was probably 1978 or 79. We were playing Kentucky and Kyle Macy, who was a 90-something percent FT shooter missed two at the end and we won. That was big, but not THIS BIG!

OK, thought I'd stop back by. Unlike some folks here, I don't stay up all night doing this (you must take this stuff w-a-a-a-y too seriously).
Several observations:
1. As for the City of Memphis, I don't like a lot of things about it either. That's why I live in Germantown. But if I were choosing a place at random to live, Knoxville wouldn't exactly be on the top of my list either. I'm not into the Cracker Barrel crowd.
2. We can trash talk back and forth all we want, but Saturday will speak for itself. I expect Memphis to win, but both teams will go to the NCAA with a high seed either way and I expect us to go deeper into the tourney than UT.
3. As for jokes, this oldie but goodie is still my favorite. I'm sure you've heard it: what has 100,000 heads and three teach? Neyland Stadium on a Saturday afternoon!
4. If GlennMaxwell sounds familiar, UTChris you must have spent some time on the University of Louisville forums. Far as I recall, annoying those idiots is the only other place I've used the name.

As many in this crowd probably wouldn't be able to figure it out on their own, I'll self-correct the typo in the joke on my previous post: Obviously, I meant three TEETH, not three teach. Repeat -- that's 100,000 heads and three TEETH in Neyland on a Saturday afternoon. Pretty good, huh? I know it gets my going everytime I hear it.
And as for bigorangefan's observation that Memphis has played no one big? Surely you gest. Have you looked at our nonconference sked this year? And you do realize we're behind you at No. 2 in RPI, right?
We'll see who does the blowing Saturday. Of course, you could be right; everyone knows that UT blows.

Dear GlennMaxwell: Please crawl back in that sewer you call the city of MemPiss and when you arrive at work this morning, tell everyone at McDonalds hello for us.
Now Vol fans - PLEASE stop bitching/whining about refs at least until the game actually starts. You look foolish, paranoid and stupid with that crap.
As for last night, obviously many here didn't see (and apparently didn't listen to) the game. That was as COMPLETE a performance as we've had in many respects. Didn't rely on 1 or 2 guys to carry us. Instead had about 5 or 6 guys with solid overall games and got some good contributions from bench guys when they weren't all out there together at the end. Auburn is obvioulys a bad team with a short roster but the Vols ignored everything and played their game - well.
Now regarding Saturday. Some love all the hype but the bottom line is that it's a bragging rights game only. The outcome won't mean anything significant to either team come March/April and it's certainly possible this is only the first of two meetings between the teams this year. Personally, if someone guaranteed me the Vols would win 13 straight AFTER this Saturday - I'd take a 50 point loss to MemPiss in a heart beat! It's about hanging banners folks and this game has absolutely nothing to do with that!

OK, OK ... enough. It would be easy to get sucked into this juvenile back and forth (and we all know that's what it really is) all day if I allowed myself to do it, but I have neither the time nor desire. So a parting thought, then I'm gone:
All trash talking aside, it really is fun having the basketball attention of the nation focused on the state of Tennessee this weekend. Who would have thought it? And it really is just an "ego game," as Coach Calipari has called it. Both sides would love to win (Memphis wants to keep the perfect record alive, aside from beating UT), but it really doesn't matter in the grand scheme. Both teams will go to the tourney seeded highly. As someone here noted, I'd gladly take a loss Saturday if it meant we wouldn't lose another one this season through the NCAA championship game.
So here's to a great basketball time in the state, and welcome to Memphis if you come down this weekend. (Don't worry, I lived here all my life and haven't gotten shot, so I think you'll be safe ;)

Vol fans,
Our team continues to improve. The decision making is improving BIG TIME--when to run or get in a half court set. Ramar Smith and JP Prince are the main reason for this improvement. Those guys are making better decisions and Ramar looks like he did in the NCAA Tourny last year---finishing strong! Our inside game is becoming more and more consistant--Chism, Duke, Tyler and Williams. Chism is taking more inside shots and not as much from the outside. Duke and Williams are improving and gaining confidence in their roles. Fans, we have yet to see the best of this team--Enjoy the ride, this is a special year.
Look out Tigers--47 game streak will end Saturday night! GO VOLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mempiss? THE_VOL, You are truly the punmaster. The way in which you combine two relevant words to create one truly hilarious and more powerful one amazes me.
I like many of my fellow brethren on this blogspot lived in Knoxville during college and really dont have a whole lot of interest in being back there unless there is a tackle football game being played at Neyland.
I also have a degree from "Tiger High." UT is no better an institute of higher learning than U of M (I promise you that). Lets be realistic, Knoxville is a college town and thats not because of academics. UT has one of the lowest graduation rates for atheletes in the SEC. Pretty campus but its not Harvard. And THE_VOL, Unless you are from Knox, Nash, or Memph you probably dont even have a college in your city. Theres a decent chance that you live in a small town off of an I-40 exit and I pay for your schools and roads with the money from the speeding tickets I get on my way from Memphis to Knoxville for football games in the fall.
Memphis is a city with culture and economic differentiation. These are things that make up a "real city" Name a major city that doesnt have such issues. The truth is that you are scared. Of what, you probably dont want to admit on this board but its obvious. So keep your fear out of my city lady.

Big time basketball game.....I hope UT wins but let's face it, rankings are somewhat useless in college basketball. It's all about what you can do in the big dance. I like Pearl's mentality about treating this game no different. I also like the fact that UT handled the Auburn Tigers the way they did last night. Last night's win shows that the team is focused. Pearl's got his team focused on the task at hand. Tennessee has looked really good in the past few games; however, Memphis is a really good basketball team.......no one can question that, but hey, the VOLS are a really good basketball team as well. Unbelievable the amount of hype around a college basketball game and even more unbelievable that Tennessee is part of that hype. No, Pearl is not a God....not even close. But he is an excellent coach and motivator. Thank you Bruce and GO VOLS!!!!

I agree with Glenn that this game means very little. Whoever loses only drops a few spots and still has shot at #1 seeding. The meaningful game will be in April. I disagree, though, that Memphis will get further in the tourney. I believe both will be in the final four.
And I got news for any of you that want to make fun of the other's home town. But if not I don't understand why he hasn't gotten more minutes w/Crews out and then Childress missing time lately.
Same w/J.Tabb to a lesser degree. Both these guys could be huge "minute stealers" against a team like Memphis who is just as deep as UT & w/more size at every position. I think Tabb & Tatum may get their most PT of the year on Sat. Just a hunch. Go Vols!

Memfrisvol, with all due respect, you aren't keeping up with the overall academic situation at UTK. You're correct that they used to be fairly close academically but the gap is widening now. Due to the lottery scholarship, the bar has been raised on entrance requirements, especially at Knoxville. The last two freshman classes have set highs on both GPA and ACT scores with this past fall having an AVERAGE of 3.6 on GPA and a 26 on the ACT. Nope, it's not Harvard but I'll guarantee you it's better than Memphis.
And the real topper is that UT REJECTED 4,000 applications this past fall primarily due to the academic bar being raised. (Somehow, I doubt many got rejected that applied to Memphis.) A number of kids from my child's graduating class ended up at Memphis, MTSU, UTC and UTM because they were among that 4,000. It's not like it used to be and it's going to get tougher every year. Eventually, the same type of rise will occur at the other schools but UT is getting just like Georgia. Very tough to get into unless you've got a very high ACT and GPA or major connections.

As far as Gameday goes Saturday, there is a communication gap somewhere. Last night on his postgame show, BP said for all UT fans to show up at the Forum early Saturday morning because it's open to the public for Gameday and he'd like to see it "half and half". According to the Commercial Appeal and as noted by other posters, that's not true. They are letting the Memphis student group "the Blue Crew" in first and I'm sure they'll fill all the slots behind the ESPN desk so all you'll see is blue. Then they are letting in people with game tickets followed by students with ID's. Maybe we'll get a little Orange in there with the folks with game tickets but I wouldn't count on it. It certainly is not "open to the public" and they are limiting it to the first 3500 people.

Don't believe me, look it up Memphis boys. In addition to UT, nearby Oak Ridge brings in the nuclear scientist community. As far as Germantown, Knoxville also has nice areas like Bearden, Farragut, Oak Ridge, and even Maryville is changing dramatically. And no place in west TN can boast the scenery - mountains, lakes, and streams. Memphis has Elvis who has been dead for 30 years, good ribs, catfish, and blues. Other than that, I would hate to live there as the place looks like crap and is unsafe to walk around the place....unless you are a General like me.

Memphis will have the advantage because of the hype of the game and it being in Memphis. If the game were in Knoxville.....well we saw what happened last season. This Tennessee team is much better than last year's team.

Father Vol,
I actually have a friend that works at the station with Vernon. he told me a month ago that they discussed this issue in the studio with several of their on air people and they all unanimously agreed that Pearl was the better on court coach. They gave a slight edge to Calipari in recruiting.
I actually like listening to Vernon. he is pretty entertaining and gets some good interviews. Huggins is a riot on his show.

utchris2003, I like listening to Vernan, too. I find him very entertaining. As for recruiting, CBP hasn't been in the big time long enough to have the connections as Cal (remember, he's a good friend of mine) does, but things are changing, as you know. I'm wondering, how many of the Tigers will enter the draft in June? What do you think? Who will they be?

I think that you will only see Rose and CDR (if he is not already a senior)
They will be in good shape next year if they get the tyreke evans kid. He would instantly feel the void left by rose

FatherVol - there will ZERO Tigers in the June draft - THE PRISON LEAGUE DOESN'T DRAFT UNTIL AUGUST!

utchris - I would agree with Pearl being a better coach, but Calipari is one of the best recruiters in the country. Pearl did a great job in recruiting one year, but I've been a little concerned that he has not landed a quality guard given we lose 3 gaurds next season. Calipari can land guards even with Rose on the team. I'm not quite sure how he pulls it off. Pearl can do more with less, but they may have to run Ramar Smith and Prince at point next season because they lost out on the quality guards to other schools.

We have defeated #1's before. My first year in Kville (1969-70), we started the season by knocking off #1 South Carolina in their arena. Have the Tigers ever beaten a #1 ranked team? Just wondering; I really don't know. Let's do it again! Go VOLS!

Fritter,
I have two really close friends that are or have been D1 coaches. Both in different circles of the coaching profession, they both offered the same response to this Question: Who is the dirtiest coach in terms of recruiting?
Both said, that the respective coaches in their circles had all mentioned Calipari as #1. Their is a story behind the recruitment of Dejuan Wagner that absolutely blew my mind.

UT beat Kentucky twice in the 70's when they only lost two games all year and won the national Championship.

utchris2003 - I have wondered if he isn't cheating. Maybe Pearl needs to pull a Fulmer on Memphis (see Alabama on NCAA probation for years)?
Pearl has a history turning folks in for cheating.
See background while at Iowa.

Fathervol/Chris, I would listen to Vernon every now and then but can't pick it up very well in Collierville. If that station would get a bigger squirrel to power their transmitter, it would help. (Thankfully, UT switched its broadcasts over to 680 this year. That was very frustrating last year.) When I go into town and pick up the show, I like his guests but I have a hard time with a lot of the juvenile junk he puts out. Pretty silly at times.
On the game itself, this is going to be more fun than a Texas Tornado Death Match at the old Mid South Coliseum back in the '70's. (Jackie Fargo, Jerry Lawler, Handsome Jimmy Valiant, mercy daddy.)

Yeah, that caused a big stink and that is one of the reasons some point to why it took so long for him to get back to the "big time."
I know that this stuff goes on everywhere, but they just say that Calipari is the "best" at it. If Alabama fires Gottfried, they might go after him for this reason.
I do not think that Pearl needs to do any reporting. I think that he is on the verge of pulling some major recruits. There are some great stories on his recruiting tactics as well. One includes him going old skool on Coach K.

GeneralKRitter- anybody can be a good recruiter if you pay them or give them hookers to come to school there- memphis state has a long history of cheating...DANA KIRK?
I root for Memphis if they are not playing UT or an SEC school/
Glad Duke got beat last night! hate the ACC early and often!
Saw memphis play MTSU early in the season...they won by 24/ UT beat MTSU by 70. You do the math!

Big difference in academics between UT and Memphis
UT: 33% of this year’s incoming class had straight-A averages in high school. UT officials called it a new standard for “academic excellence” in a Thursday press release for freshmen, with an average core grade point average of 3.65 and ACT score of 26.
Memphis: "One of our goals was to have 10 percent of the freshman class be honor students, and we have met that goal. We will continue to meet that goal, and to set it higher, and we believe we will continue to meet all of our goals."
