SEC matchups for Thursday
Vanderbilt (0-0) at Miami, Ohio (0-0)
Time: 7:30 p.m. TV: ESPNU
Skinny: Vanderbilt leads the series 2-1, including a 24-13 win over the RedHawks in 2007. This will be the first time in the brief series that the game will not take place at Vanderbilt. Miami returns 17 of its 22 starters and is bidding to win its fifth Mid-American Conference East Division title in the past six years.
Key Players: Chris Nickson and Mackenzi Adams are vying for the Commodores' quarterbacking duties, and Vanderbilt returns a pair of starting receivers for them to throw to in George Smith and Sean Walker. Miami linebacker Clayton Mullins was the 2007 MAC Defensive Player of the Year, and fellow linebacker Joey Hudson is a two-time All-MAC selection and a team captain.
Line: Miami by 1
North Carolina State (0-0) at South Carolina (0-0)
Time: 8 p.m. TV: ESPN
Skinny: This will be the first time the teams have met since 1999, in Lou Holtz's first game as the Gamecocks' head coach. The Wolfpack won that meeting, 10-0, and holds a 26-25-4 edge in the series. It's the first of three consecutive games South Carolina and coach Steve Spurrier will have televised nationally.
Key Players: Gamecocks' receiver Kenny McKinley, one of six returning offensive starters, is coming off a season that saw him catch a school-record 77 passes for 968 yards and nine TDs. McKinley is projected to leave South Carolina as the career record holder in nearly all receiving categories, but Spurrier has yet to settle on who will be throwing him the ball. The Wolfpack has great depth in the backfield with two returning 1,000-yard rushers, Toney Baker and Andre Brown, and another, Jamelle Eugene, who ended last season with three 100-yard outings over the last six games.
Line: South Carolina by 13 1/2.
