LOS ANGELES — UCLA quarterback Patrick Cowan will have knee surgery and miss the 2008 season, the latest in a long string of quarterback setbacks for the Bruins.
UCLA opens the season against Tennessee.
Cowan, who had edged out the also-injured Ben Olson for the starting job this spring, was carted off the field on Thursday after injuring his left knee while scrambling, and will have surgery on his anterior cruciate ligament.
“All I know is I need the surgery and I’m not going to be able to play next season,” Cowan said.
Cowan missed eight games last season because of various injuries. He had already used a redshirt season, and was unsure whether he’d apply for a sixth year of eligibility.
“I don’t know. I wasn’t expecting this. There are a lot of things that can happen at this point.”
Olson broke a bone in his right foot the same day Cowan was hurt, both in fluke injuries that did not involve contact.
Olson, a 25-year-old slowed by injuries throughout his long college career, was considering surgery to have a screw put in the broken foot and was expected to miss six-to-eight weeks.
He and junior college transfer Kevin Craft will compete for the starting job.
“We’re going to play that position well,” new UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel said. “I have full confidence in (offensive coordinator) Norm Chow. I have full confidence in the kids to give everything they’ve got.”

This is bad news for Chavis and at the end of the day, for Foolmore. I fully expect Olson or whoever starts to launch a Heisman campaign on Labor Day.

the way you look at things they could put Cowan out there with one leg and he would have a heisman campaign against Chavis and Fulmer. Get a life CR quit being so negative all the time. Some negativity is good but all the time dude. you need to get out more.

Fulmer just booked an additional 3 weeks stay @ Jackson Hole.

Not really, mjohnsonvols. Off the top of my head, Desean Jackson launched his Heisman campaign vs. us last year. Sure, it was a short one, but it was launched nonetheless. Then we had the Tebow show launch his Heisman campaign against us as well. Then, we had DJ Hall of Alabama put up Heisman type numbers. Thank God this game was on regional television, right Fulmer? Otherwise, he may have even been able to get into the Heisman race. Oh and LSU's backup QB for the 2nd time this decade had a career day vs. us to win the SEC championship.

Its always sad to hear of a Kid who seems to have no luck when it comes to injuries. Whether they are Vols or our opponents we often forget that they are just kids trying to play against stiff competition. The NCAA's rules don't help any either. I would like to see the rules changed so that any verified injury which causes a Kid to miss the season would result in a year being added back to their eligibility.

wow.......I've been reading and not postin' lately and see old CRVOL/VOLCR etc is still alive and kickin'. The only thing that has changed is the poster boy name he chooses. Same old dead posting of same old sad info. Well the glass is half empty poster will surely have another un-positive post for someone to read since he is wurkinlikeheckylnjekyl to post his life away. Hope Cowan has a good recovery and like many realize there is more to life than sports.

yawn...this may be vols4jesus' most coherent post ever. That being said, I will be referring to Fulmer as Foolmore until he does a national media interview of some sort. I guess you'll have to put it up with it until he does one or until SEC media days at the end of July.

vol4jesus - Have you been on sabbatical?
Posted by chiefofstaff on April 28, 2008 at 11:24 a.m. (Suggest removal)
The big concern is the way the Vols have fared against first year coaches lately. Off the top of my head, we have graciously welcomed in Zook, Spurrier, Miles, Saban recently,(to name a few) and we're still 0 for Meyer. I feel pretty good about our talent against their's even before their QBs went down, but this trend is troubling. GO VOLS

I'm sure UCLA will find a starter by the end of Spring. They just won't have a ton of time to prepare for what we have coming against them. But then again, didn't we lose to a first year O-Coordinator when we played Bama last year?

Enough about the QBs at UCLA, what about their RBs?
Posted by tigervol9802 on April 28, 2008 at 12:16 p.m. (Suggest removal)
For technicality's sake -
Given our history against backup quarterbacks, would this qualify as a backup since he had been beaten out for the starting job? Or becasue it was spring, will enough time elapse so that he will be the official starting QB?

I hope cowan will get better, but in the long run hope it turns out good for us. I'm sure Chow has been working with this kid a lot, now Chow will have just 4 or 5 months with the new guy to teach a new offence too, the his back-up. GO VOLS!

Let me see, opening day, 2006, we had the backup QB for Cal in our house. Seems like we did a pretty good job that day. Last year, at Alabama, tough play to play. Other than UF, it seems like we normally take care of business at home. (I try to forget about 2005).

Should have no trouble with UCLA McBrim. Norm Chow was good when he had Bush, Leinhart, and 3 5 star receivers. Norm from Cheers could have coached that time. Plus I see where they are returning 9 starters from a really bad defense. Forida and Georgia are returning a lot of starters from bad defenses also, should have no trouble with them either.

TN7275: What???
Posted by tigervol9802 on April 28, 2008 at 3:03 p.m. (Suggest removal)
What some people call negative I call realistic.
The article by Chris Low on ESPN at least gave me enough hope (blind hope?) that we're going to be able to score, but I still don't know why people are suddenly so excited about our defense. Yes, our secondary should be the best in years, but if we can't get a pass rush or stop the run, they will look average.
It's all about the line play, and I still see no reason why I should be overly excited about a team that is two-deep at D-tackle.

Beating UCLA would be great, might help recruiting with National TV. Beyond that I don't care if we win or lose at UCLA. OOC games really don't come into play until the bowl season, and BCS bids.
The road to Atlanta goes through Athens this year, UGA is looking very well right now, and if they can keep the Injury Gremlin away they are gonna be a tough win. Another Crystal Football would be fantastic, but I sure want that SEC Crown far more. Being SEC Champ is the biggest recruiting tool in the South, we need that. Too much talent is getting outta Tennessee and the other SEC States.
Great Tennessee Football teams don't have to care about who is injured on opponents teams, other than adjustments to the starters. Winners win, they find ways to win, losers find excuses.

I disagree with you bowerst, here were my predictions posted back in March. Yeah I know, I missed on the Neuheisel precdiction but feel comfortable with the rest.
Posted on March 13 at 3:27 p.m.
TN v UAB - UT wins 42-17. UAB QB is hurt the day before as Bo Jackson renacts his famous HR at Blzaer Field and hits QB in throwing arm. Emergency surgery by Dr. James Andrews fails.
TN v UCLA - UT wins 24 to 13. Coach Neuheisel is still steaming because UT beats UCLA in basketball causing him to miss a perfect NCAA bracket in his betting pool.
TN v FLA - UT wins 21 to 20. Coach Rural Meyer is too busy texting recruits and forgets to send field goal team in for potential game winner.
TN v AU - UT wins 13 to 3. Tuberville is still in Louisville interviewing for their job. Can't get plane back because United States is out of Fuel.
TN v N.Ill - UT wins 49-3. G Gun scores every touchdown and kicks field goal just for good measure. U.S. finds fuel as gas goes down to $45 per gallon.
TN v UGA - UT wins 51 to 7. The 50+ scoring on Georgia continues. Coach Richt calls Jim Donnan and
ask him to help recruit another David Green and Pollack. Fulmer wears Hob Nail Boots to REM/B-52's concert after game.
TN v MISS St- UT wins 27 to 10. Sly Croom invites Sly Stallone and Sly Stone to watch game from sidelines. Stallones forehead breaks when he tries to smile. Sly Stone sniffs sideline chalk and gives imprompteau concert after the game. He forgets the words to "Dance to the Music"
TN v Ala - UT wins 31 to 20. Coach Saban is attacked by drunken female Alabama fans after the game. He it taken to UT emergency room after the game and pronounced dead. Comes back to life after he finds out Michigan fires Rodriguez after 0 and 6 start, accepts Michigan job.
TN v SC - UT wins 37 to 13. Spurrier still thinks he has Florida talent and goes for it on 4th down every time.
TN v WY (HC) - UT wins 41 to 7. Condredge Hollaway hits Larry Seivers for last TD as part of Homecoming festivities. Fulmer rides Cowboys bronco mascot after game and stays on for 15 seconds.
TN v Vandy - UT wins 34 to 0. Vandy fans out-think us for the entire game.
TN v KY - UT wins 23 to 3. Randy Sanders is hired by IUPUI after game for their upstart football team.
UT beats LSU in SEC and Ohio ST for National Championhip. Fulmer retires to appease bloggers and we hire Dickey/Battle/Majors as Tri-Coaches. They win 09 National Championship and retire. Peyton Manning is hired as Coach.
The End.

bowerst, UGA will need several miracles to win the SEC. They play Az St away then head into an SEC schedule that includes the three best teams in the West: Bama, Aub, and LSU.
Also, if Aub beats UT it will be because their D won the game for them. They are going to the spread and are further from having the right players for it than UF was when they went to it.
Posted by sjt18 on April 29, 2008 at 4:01 a.m. (Suggest removal)
BADGES, UCLA does not return 9 starters on D. Where did that come from? They lost most of their starters on both sides of the ball and 8 of their top 10 tacklers, their top INT player, top sack guy,...

Mayo>Wilson
Ayers>Mitchell
Brown/Martin>Reynolds
Morely>Hefney
McKenzie/Myers-White>Karl
That's why alot of us think the D will be better. UT upgrades in all but one position where they lost someone.
FWIW, there are some folks with supposed inside knowledge that think that Gerald Williams has a good shot at beating Wilson out. I know that some don't think he can make that transition... but there are others who apparently do.
GW is reportedly 6'4", 245, sub-4.6 legit 40... with a really nasty disposition on the field.

If you offer what is perceived negative commentary, you had to have played or coached at the college or pro level. To say that everything's peachy though and there is nothing wrong, middle school football in rural Tennessee or zero playing experience is required.
Sorry Ashley, stepping foot on a football field a few times as part of the Thunder thigh color guard doesn't count. I'm sure you remember hearing the cheers, "Rattle, rattle, rattle, here come the cattle" each time you performed though.

Thunder thigh color guard? WOW!
Back to the real subject....I agree with bigorangedude, UCLA will be an overall tough opponent. However, my perception is no matter who's at QB, Tennessee's defense will give him fits. I look forward to seeing the improvements in our defense this year. I perceive that the D will be a little tougher this year. As for the offense, my perception receptors are failing me.

Ashley: Woo. What's with the attitude, dude?

My comments are null and void but people somehow are reading and commenting on them.
100-pounds-of-chewed-bubble gum-thighs wants to discuss football? That's funny, that's the last thing she wants to discuss here. Her posts consist of namecalling, a football calendar, and correcting spelling mistakes.
IF you do meet her face to face TJ, bring some cream cheese to tide her over in case she gets frisky.

Too bad for the guy. It would suk to finally win the starting job and get hurt your last yr. Remember Jerry Colquit?

jcvet,
Losing Colquitt was a heartbreaker, against UCLA no less. He waited his turn, and then it was over.
He was class guy.

I think that may have been the last time we used 4 quaterbacks in one game. Colquitt, Helton, Manning and I think Brandon Stewart played one series. Todd Helton finally led a couple of drives late in the game to make it 25 to 23. Hopefully Crompton is the only one that plays this year, unless we are up big late.

Badge: You may be right, but I was thinking Helton went out earlier with an injury too.

TommyJack - Badge is right. Helton nearly broght the team back against UCLA - best game he ever played....2nd half anyway. He did later get hurt which led to Manning starting - think it was game 2 or 3?

Ashley is a DUDE? Who knew?

Why are you and your fritter clansman so obsessed with running CPF into the ground and basically making a mockery of the program and it's former and current players?
Rule 1: Do not badmouth fritters
Rule 2: When making up playing days, do not use 17 years - a little hard to believe.
Rule 3: This is one wild eyed fritter who thinks Foolmer is peachy king.
Rule 4: Don't dress in drag.

Folks, do not click that link for the latest John Adams column. He will start to have delusions of significance. You know he makes up controversial crap just to get a rise out of us, to "generate interest." Don't fall for it.
