Two UCLA QBs injured in practice

LOS ANGELES — UCLA quarterbacks Pat Cowan and Ben Olson are hurt again after struggling through injuries last season.

Each had to be carted off the field at spring practice, Cowan with a left knee injury and Olson with a broken bone in his right foot. Both of Thursday’s injuries were flukes — neither occurred because of contact.

Cowan, who edged Olson out for the No. 1 job this spring, will be sidelined for an indefinite period with ligament and cartilage damage. Olson, a 25-year-old slowed by injuries throughout his long college career, is expected to be out for six to eight weeks.

Junior college transfer Kevin Craft, redshirt freshman Chris Forcier and converted wide receiver Osaar Rasshan will share the quarterback duties in the Bruins’ camp-ending scrimmage Saturday night at the Rose Bowl.

The injuries are an obvious blow for Rick Neuheisel, who became the Bruins coach in December.

“I’m OK under the circumstances,” he said in a conference call Friday. “These are two tough setbacks for two great kids who are certainly trying, who have been bitten by some bad luck over the course of their careers.

“But they’ve always bounced back and they will bounce back again.”

Cowan, who hurt his knee scrambling, missed eight games last season because of myriad injuries. Olson, sidelined by injuries for six games, was hurt this time when he planted his foot awkwardly.

Neuheisel doesn’t yet know a timetable for Cowan’s recovery, since doctors will wait for the swelling in his knee to go down to examine him further. Olson may have a screw inserted in his broken bone.

“There is a chance, should the MRI prove that reconstruction (surgery) is necessary, we could be without Pat in ’08,” Neuheisel said. “But we’ll keep moving forward. Even eight weeks from now, he (Olson) has most of June and all of July to get himself ready to go.

“I’m always one that looks to the bright side. I think these two will show their resiliency again. And it’s a great opportunity for Kevin Craft to take another step in learning our offense and go out and gain some confidence. It’s a great opportunity for Chris, and it’s a great opportunity for Osaar Rasshan to prove that he’s a quarterback.”

Rasshan and walk-on McLeod Bethel-Thompson had to fill in last season when both Cowan and Olson were out, but neither was effective. Coach Karl Dorrell was fired after the Bruins went 6-6 last year.

Time for UT to give the Rose Bowl its grand opening for the 08 season. Gen. Fritter, looks like the stars are starting to align. Hopefully it's not a meteor shower.

This normally would be cause for celebration but Foolmore's teams haven't fared too well vs. backup QBs.

If anything whomever the back up is, that will be less film to study of UCLA we will have. but on the brighter side this will give mean both QB's will have closer amount of experence. GO VOLS!

Ugh, I hate the pac10. What a bunch of sissies. I bet they made all this up just so they could justify sacrificing a lesser QB to the likes of Rico McCrazy. (here's hoping our defense doesn't get jet lagged or whatever else caused them not to show up to last year's west coast contest).

I'll tell you what, every year, there is unbridled, unfounded optimism, but hell if every year I LOVE buying right into it. GO VOLS.

I'll take my chances with a Junior College transfer a RS Soph and a wide reciever. Believe this game will jump start the assualt on the season interceptions, number of pick 6 and return yards records.

Olson better bounce back quick before he turns 30.

This is setting up quite nicely.

We'll find out how our defense stacks-up against the run real quick. With their QB situation, we may be able to put an extra man in the box.

I'm pumped. It should be a crime to have to wait untill the season. I'm much more confident than I was last year coming into the season. Not predicting a Nat.Title, but think we will see dominance. I seen chavez and fulmer chewing people out at the O/W game like I've not seen in a while. Though I've never called for their jobs, I've always thought they were conservative. I think clawson, drayton, scott, ect. have brought youth, enthusiasm, and most important MAD RECRUITING SKILS. Think, had they been here earlier in this recruiting class, you KNOW we would been top 10. IT's looking good, go vols.

gatorfan8, one of two things is true of your post. You are ignorant, know it, and don't care to make yourself look stupid... or you are ignorant, don't know it, and carelessly make yourself look stupid.

Of course anything can happen in a football game. OTOH, UCLA went 6-7 last year. Including at least one of these QB's, they lost 22 of the 44 players that made up their two deep including their most productive players in every position group.

What happened when UF lost 9 players from its NC D but brought back most of their O?... 9-4 and some pretty poor defensive showings. UCLA didn't start from nearly that lofty perch and have lost MORE off both sides of the ball than you all did off of the D. IOW's, they're in bad shape.

Now that you have been informed of just a few of the realities as they exist today... you have no more excuses for being ignorant... another rant like the one you just posted and we'll be forced to conclude that YOU are the "stupid inbreed".

Thanks for the heads up cgbtn, always enjoy Chris Low writing about the Vols. Not so crazy about that picture of Foster in the "SEC Lowdown" story though. Brought up some bad memories about fumbles.

On the subject of the UCLA QB's for a second, Chow didn't sound too optimistic about Cowan playing this year. Think I heard Olson would be back in 6-8 weeks.

Hey gatorfan 8,
You talk about stupid inbreeds, lets talk about the death threats you stupid gator fans made to the guy(at the impound yard) who was going to press charges on your beloved gators;and also how that sissy coach of yours doesn't discipline his players. In the first couple of years teams were trying to figure out the offense, now lets see how well they do since the spread has become the norm. The gators will have back to back 3rd place finishes in the East. GO VOLS

Posted by IBleedOrange444 on April 26, 2008 at 11:05 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Wow that's terrible. I never like to see players get injured, unless it's temporary (rest of game)and inflicted by the Vols. I hope at least one of them is healthy enough to go when we square off this fall. I don't think we would've needed either of them out to take these boys to the woodshed!!

Posted by eVOLution on April 26, 2008 at 11:08 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Orange4ever, I'm a UT fan and I just want to tell you that the Gators will not have back to back 3rd place finishes. They are really good and have a really good coach, who I hate cause he's a prick. And Gatorfan I have no clue what you typed can you please go through the schooling system again and learn to type English. Thank you.

gatorfan8-

You type like you want everyone to think you have a "gold grill" and you have a closet full of hats that still have the stickers on them. That can only mean one thing, you're a 15 year old white boy that lives in the suburbs. Come back and talk college football once you've got your high school diploma homeboy!

sjt18-

Nice response. I knew that UCLA was not good last year getting blown out by some bad teams, but I didn't know that they were losing that many people.

There are too many people on here that are happy that those guys got hurt and too many that are trying to spin this into a debate about the competence of our coaching staff. The coaches certainly aren't going anywhere before the season starts so you guys can drop the f#cking argument for a few months! Come back and crucify them when we lose a game, but for a little while at least can you STFU!!??

Evolution,
As we know it takes a little luck to win a N.C..Well they had alot that year they won it.Urban caught the SEC off guard with the spread but I believe we got something for them this year.Their coach is good but not great,Tebow makes him shine.I don't think Urban has stayed in the same conference more than three years so lets see what happens now that teams know what to expect. He will find out a running QB want last long in the SEC,whether its two or three QBs. Great post ibleedorange444 .

Tough break for the injured players, but this was already a completely winnable game even with them playing. The tone for this season will be set the last two weekends of September against Florida and Auburn. I will be at both games screaming and hoping. We are 5-11 against Florida since divisional play began in 1992, and 2-5 since 2000. It is past time we turn this series around. We are 0-3 against Auburn since 2000, but I think we can take them this year. We MUST beat Florida, no more "next year" on that game as far as I am concerned.

have said it before and will say it again.....

longtime vol nailed it......

the respect you are looking for is not in berkeley, not in la, not in bristol, ct (at the espn studios).....it's in gainesville, fl, and will be coming to knoxville.

the back to back games with florida and auburn will give tenn ample opportunity to get the respect that y'all are looking for.

going out to la and winning will last two weeks if they lose to florida and/or auburn.

but, beating florida would give tenn national respect throughout the entire season.

Seems many have forgotten last year's season opener in the state of California? Overconfidence will doom this team again. Beware the trap!

Posted by dtaylor0730 on April 28, 2008 at 10:08 a.m. (Suggest removal)

99gator, I do have to agree with you, even though agreeing with a UF fan really hurts. There will be no national prominence in beating a UCLA team that was lack-luster last year, and working with a 3 string QB. All it would be is a tick mark in the W row, not that that is a bad thing. UAB and UF is where the real football season will begin. These are conference games, and the truth is, unless you win your conference, don't expect to win a NC.

The UF game is one I really look forward to. That in my mind is a redemption game that has a BIG opportunity for pay-back. UF is a great program, but it put a bad taste in UT fan's mouth to see UM do everything he could to run up the score.

Posted by 99gator on April 28, 2008 at 10:35 a.m. (Suggest removal)

dtaylor

no doubt tenn should not have to search hard for motivation.

all the tenn staff should have to do is write last year's score on a chalkboard and that should do it.

i think tenn has more national respect than some of you think.

some of you think that the rest of the country thinks of tenn as a joke, but i don't think that's remotely true
