Michigan outkicked defending champion Tennessee in a red-hot distance-medley relay at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia.
Michigan’s Nicole Edwards fought off UT’s Sarah Bowman to give the Wolverines the win in 10:49.58, the second-fastest time in Penn Relays history.
“Sarah Bowman is a very talented runner, and I felt I’d do my best just to hang on and keep up with her,” Edwards said. “She set a really tough pace and did all the work. I just tried to hang on.”
The Lady Vols had to settle for second this year, but their 10:50.51 clocking was the fourth-fastest in the history of the prestigious meet.
UT’s quartet was Brittany Sheffey, LaTonya Loche, Phoebe Wright and Bowman.
Late Thursday, junior Katie Van Horn finished third in the 10,000 meters with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 34:52.97. Sophomore Jackie Areson placed 19th (17:10.88) in the 5,000 meters.
Former Vol Anthony Famiglietti won the Olympic Development Steeplechase in 8:24.34.
