Savage expected to pick Rutgers

Tom Savage is expected to commit to Rutgers on Friday after also considering Tennessee, Georgia, Louisville, Miami and Pittsburgh, the Philadelphia Daily News reported Thursday.

The 6-foot-5, 215-pound quarterback from Cardinal O’Hara High in Philadelphia has scheduled a press conference for Friday to announce his decision.

There had been speculation that the Vols had a good chance to land Savage, especially after receiving a commitment from wideout Je’Ron Stokes on April 6. Stokes is also from Philadelphia Northeast.

Savage has completed 190-of-426 passes for 2,547 yards and 20 touchdowns in three seasons. He missed five games last season due to injury. His brother Bryan is the starting quarterback at Hofstra.

Rivals.com and Scout.com rank Savage as the sixth and 11th best quarterback prospect in the country, respectively.

190 of 426 passes? Either he's got control issues or his receivers are awful...great get for Schiano, would have been decent get for UT... moving on...

A Press Conference to announce where he is signing in 2009? Does he think he's T. Pryor or something?

Why would want to play football at Rutgers? They have a good coach but they aren't going anywhere because they play in a crappy conference.

Oh Yeah.Snap into a slim jim.Who cares?

I can hear the press conference now....."I have always wanted to be a Scarlett Knight" (spoken with a lisp of course).

ya'll r cracking me up today! agreed, forget him.

Nacho Man Tom Savage! misses flying elbow smash and land directly into a pointless football school who hasn't contributed anything to major college football since they played the first game over 130 years ago....DIG IT?

HilltopperVolPhi608--
Playing in the crappiest BCS conference means the easiest possible route to play in the National Championship game.
If any Lil' East team ever goes undefeated, they will get to play in the big game over a 1-loss team from a real conference.
You're right, though, about Schiano-- he is a darn good coach. I knew that a few years back when Rutgers gave the Vols fits for about 3 quarters (glad we still won that one-- the Scarlet Knights weren't getting any respect back in those days).

kingsport, slim jim's , vienna sausages, and on occasion, when I had money, potted meat got me through a couple of long winters at old UT.

lol Bleed Orange.

Has there ever been a QB from Rutgers make it to the NFL?

Mmmmm.... potted meat food product...

Enjoy the Big East, young man. You'll always wish you'd have chosen the Vols.

Posted by pdhuff on April 17, 2008 at 5 p.m. (Suggest removal)

6'5 -215 - he could completely double over a 6' 248lb LB's shoulder while not worrying at all where the ball went. Once they get his nose out of the earhole in his helmet, he'd be allright.

Good luck, son as a Scarlett Knight

Posted by WPAINE on April 17, 2008 at 5:15 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Why will he wish he was a Vol? He would never play as a Vol. He more than likely will as a Scarlett Knight... Good luck at Rutgers, the more balanced the Big East becomes the less likely West Virginia or Louisville will be able to make it to the national championship b/c of an easy schedule

He'd have made a great 4th stringer!

Rutgers? What on earth for?

Who cares? Rutgers? Not good numbers...maybe he has an upside or potential but, I don't want that type of player in an elite SEC school. Not for TN anyway.

he likes sissy man school . football huh

He just likes the school with no tradition, but who played the first known college football game up in "Joysey". I agree, he would have two or three quarterbacks to compete with here at UT or in the SEC. When he goes to Rutgers, he will be the sure fire starting QB at Rutgers.

Greer case of Busch Light and some Ramen noodles made me happy most nights.

Posted by marinevol on April 17, 2008 at 10:41 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Is there something about this guy that is not reflected in his stats? If not, why were we offering him a scholarship? We need to set our sights much higher.

Posted by volster on April 17, 2008 at 10:59 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Completed 190 out of 426 passes, sounds like Rutgers material to me. 44% completion rate in high school, what would that equate to in the SEC? Maybe 20%?

Posted by rpoll1095 on April 17, 2008 at 11:17 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Living in NJ and knowing this area, it never ceases to amaze me that ANYONE could choose Rutgers over the likes of a Tennessee, Georgia, Miami, etc. If you ever saw the difference between crowd support, facilities, and location, you would be astounded. That said, 109 of 426 and 20 TD's over a three year career? Regardless of the somewhat suspect national rankings, those statistics will have none of these schools crying. Rutgers is welcome to him, we need better than that. Why use up a scholarship on "maybe." Looking forward to Football Time in Tennessee!

Kingsport - pot of beans and bottle of vodka left the rest of us gasping for air.

Eat more Fritters!

That's wierd. Rivals has him listed as 6'3" 231. That is a big difference in body types from 6'5" 215.

Posted by wtnvol on April 18, 2008 at 11:03 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Rivals and Scout are not reliable when it comes to details like height and weight. My son is on both sites and even though he gave them the correct weight, they have him listed as 15 lbs lighter than he is. Scout also lists one school in his "schools of interest" which has never contacted him.

Look for Stokes to de-commit and open up his options again as well.

hiresanders - stuff your fat face with some fritters and shut up! Why don't you move to South Bend and live with the rest of the Notre Dummies?

My wife's whole family are Vols fans. I went to Rutgers and am extremely proud of my school. Seeing what you people are writing here about my school, my conference, and this poor kid who never did a thing to any of you, you should be ashamed of yourselves. I lived in Georgia for a year, and God help me, I never thought I would say this, but several Dawgs fans came on our message board today and congratulated us in the most classy way, and they are a far more classy group of people than you animals. Same with LSU, classy bunch of fans. Never again will I say a kind work about you or your filthy creamsicles, or defend you when fans of other SEC teams bash Vols fans for their rudeness, ignorance, and every other kind of horrible comment I have heard them make about you people. Apparently it's all too true

czxqa--- shut your pie hole loser. You're lucky to be married to a classy lady with an intelligent family. We don't get real happy when we have lose a QB. so if we offened you or your team, just don't recruit any more of our players.

Posted by czxqa on April 18, 2008 at 10:48 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Good job, voloser. You have a real smart mouth to go along with your ignorance. When exactly was Savage "your player"? Judging from the rest of the mature comments here, the #24 player in the country is useless trash. We'll go ahead and take that trash, and Stokes to go with it. AND DON'T RECRUIT IN MY KITCHEN.

Posted by hiresanders on April 18, 2008 at 11:58 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Czxqa, welcome to Tennessee football. Where class (having it and going to it) and abiding the law are optional.

Posted by dfreeman on April 19, 2008 at 12:40 a.m. (Suggest removal)

czxqa - and I'm guessing that since you are indeed a Scarlet Knight that you were on GA, LSU, TN fan sites (who all happened to be recruiting this kid) is all by chance? Or was it that you had just enough class to come on here and rub it into the face of better schools! If you had so much more class than us vol fans, why did you even bother to come on here and comment on a recruit that you beat us out for? Stokes ain't going anywhere! He's a solid yes for us!!

Posted by sjt18 on April 19, 2008 at 6:46 a.m. (Suggest removal)

hiresanders, you wouldn't know class if it crawled under your trailor and had pups.

czxqa, Savage is a nice pick up. Many Vol fans were hopeful of getting him because he is highly rated. Honestly, if I'd seen that stat before I probably wouldn't have wanted him... Still, he looks to have good measurables and may develop into a fine player.

BTW, if the attitude you came in here with is indicative of Rutgers fans... they probably don't deserve the kid.

FTR, I've defended the Big East here and elsewhere though I'm not sure that Rutgers was much more than a flash in the pan.

Posted by hiresanders on April 19, 2008 at 10:46 a.m. (Suggest removal)

SJT-You should know how to spell trailer since you live in one. As the great Chris Fowler said on ESPN "If Tennessee wins, it will throw the state into a trailerpark frenzy." No truer words were ever spoken.

Posted by sjt18 on April 20, 2008 at 2:18 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Whatever you say there "hiresanders". Even your screen name can't be taken seriously.

BTW, don't live in Tn or in a "trailer". FWIW, I don't think you want to start a spelling and grammar contest.

the only reason anyone lives in New Jersey is that they dont know any better.

Posted by rpoll1095 on April 21, 2008 at 10:30 p.m. (Suggest removal)

czxqa, it just so happens I also went to Rutgers some years ago. It was OK. Their program had a good year two years ago. And Schiano has done a miracle job resurecting that shipwreck called Rutgers football. So fine, your proud of your school...good for you. You got a rated quarterback that might well help. Be happy. But those of us posting here and those who went to Tennessee are proud of our school too. Frankly, you did not distinguish yourself as a "class person" with your post either, so don't throw too many insults our way. And whether or not you "support Tennessee" in your conversations down at Georgia or NJ, or wherever, noone down here will lose a lot of sleep over it. Enjoy your season. Congratulations on a good recruit.

Exactly rpoll1095, czxqa did not distiguish himself as a "classy" fan. We will not lose sleep over this guy even though he has four stars on rivals because we are already set at QB for the next four or so years. I'm not denying that Savage is a good player, but he is looking at more playing time at Rutgers.

Posted by HilltopperVolPhi608 on April 21, 2008 at 11:56 p.m. (Suggest removal)

czxqa, Welcome to SEC football. It's a way of life. It's all about the college sports down here and not pro ball. GO Hilltoppers but most of all GO VOLS!
