Vols coach on a Pearl-wind schedule

At NBA camp with Lofton, Smith, visits men's, women's Final Fours

Bruce Pearl is coming and going, adding meetings, appearances and trips to an already busy schedule.

It's not easy staying near the top of the collegiate basketball world, but Tennessee's head coach is trying as he prepares for his fourth year at the helm.

"Yep, I was there (in Tampa, Fla.) to see the Lady Vols win last night (Sunday). Wasn't that great?'' Pearl said. "I'll be headed back down there for the championship game.''

Pearl was in San Antonio on Thursday to be honored as the Adolph Rupp national coach of the year, and on Saturday he did the pregame Final Four show on CBS from the Alamo City.

"You know what's great about the title game between Memphis and Kansas?'' Pearl said. "One way or another, we'll be playing the defending national champions for the third year in a row, with that game at Kansas (Jan. 3, 2009) and our game with Memphis.''

The Vols won three of four against the Florida teams that won national titles in 2006 and 2007 before sweeping the young Gators this season.

Pearl said the Vols' upcoming schedule, which also includes non-conference games with NCAA tournament teams Gonzaga, Temple and Belmont in addition to a Thanksgiving weekend swing through the Old Spice Classic in Orlando, Fla., has had the desired effect.

"We're obviously on the right track with our scheduling,'' he said. "Playing the teams that we do helps us recruit.''

The UT players on campus are doing individual work on their own, but Pearl stresses their main focus must be on academics.

"There is no organized team stuff going on; we want them on top of their studies before coming back revitalized and fresh,'' Pearl said. "We'll start offseason conditioning next week.''

Pearl said having Kansas and Memphis on the schedule is sure to get his players' attention.

"They know where we're going and who we're playing,'' Pearl said, "so they know they need to be excited about improving.''

Pearl said he is headed to Port Smith, Va., on Thursday to assist departing seniors JaJuan Smith and Chris Lofton at an NBA draft camp featuring 32 of the nation's top outgoing seniors.

"I want to help Chris and JaJuan through the process as much as I can, with all the pro scouts and agents that will be on hand,'' Pearl said. "My guys don't care how much I know until they know how much I care. Part of that is taking care of them after they leave.''

Pearl said he expects to receive NBA draft evaluations on Tyler Smith and Wayne Chism within the next couple of weeks. Smith has said he will not return for his junior season if projected to be selected in the top-half of the first round.

Schedule update: The Vols' non-conference schedule to date (with 2008 RPI in parenthesis) includes road games at Temple (No. 47), vs. Marquette (No. 20) in Nashville, at Middle Tennessee State (No. 110) and at Kansas (No. 5).

There are non-conference home games with Gonzaga (No. 30), UT Chattanooga (No. 146), UT Martin (No. 209), Belmont (No. 78), Memphis (No. 3) and Louisiana-Lafayette (No. 182). The Vols still have a home game to add.

Tennessee also plays three games in the Old Spice Classic in Orlando on Nov. 27 (Thanksgiving Day/night), Nov. 28 and Nov. 30. That field includes: Gonzaga, Michigan State (No. 16), Maryland (No. 85), Oklahoma State (No. 77), Siena (No. 66), Wichita State (No. 199) and a team to be named later.

Dates and times will be released when approved by the SEC office.

I was watching the NC game and saw Calipari blow it, Coach Pearl would have fouled Kansas and sent to the line instead of letting them hit the 3 and send the game into OT. You think Calipari would have figured out that. Thank goodness we have Bruce.

Where's that Memphis fan who loves to run his mouth on these message boards????? He wanted to bust on us for losing in the Sweet 16, but finishing 2nd is no different than finishing 16th... it just means you're the 1st loser!

ROCK CHALK JAYHAWK!! I HATE MEMPHIS!! GO VOLS!!

Pearl represents UT so well in everything he does. Recieving the Rupp Award is really special. Coach Mears, who held Rupp in such high esteem, would have been very proud of Coach Pearl.

I'd like to see a series with Louisville too. We need to figure out how to beat them.

Fullamanure...that's funny.

richvol:

To be really fair, UL has a long, proud basketball tradition and we are, well, spotty. UL has nearly always had more talent.

We have played them several VERY good games. Seems like there was a game WAY back when Dale Ellis was playing where we had a good chance...but the dang gym was VERY hot, and Dale wore down. If I recall correctly, the teams Dale was on were Basically Dale and not much else.

Wow, just reading about CBP's schedule wears me out! He is the greatest salesman for Vol bball and the university we have ever had. He is really building something special here. Next year's schedule should be enough to concentrate the minds of the players wonderfully. It's great...to be...a TENNESSEE VOLUNTEER!!!
BTW, mparker, I think richvol and most of the rest of us are all on the same page with regard to Louisville. We are still striving to reach their level, but I think we are almost there. The best is yet to come!

bdavis, that is a great point. 3 needed to tie, foul them before the shot. i know BP did that earlier this year and it worked great.

Well, to be fair, Memphis was trying to foul Collins, but they didn't blow the whistle. Collins managed to get it to Chalmers and the rest is history. Great championship game last night. Two truly great basketball teams. Looking forward to UT getting the opportunity to measure themselves against both next year. Memphis will likely take a big step back next year without CDR, Rose, and Dorsey though. I've gotta admit that I did get a good bit of pleasure watching Memphis blow the title with poor free throw shooting at the end (especially since I had Kansas winning it all and therefore won my pool). I'm looking forward to owning Memphis yet again in Knoxville next year.

utvol1961 - what do you expect? It's Mike Griffith!

bflynn - yeah right! The season ended less than 24 hours ago and you wanna start that crap. There is a HUGE difference between optimism and denial of reality pal!

BigMike - don't care what Cheater Cal said about trying to foul, there was NOBODY on the floor that looked to be trying to and more than one had great chances. IF he REALLY wanted to foul em, why didn't he take a timeout after the free throw to set his D and make sure they knew what to do??? It looked to me like the pussycats just flat choked and that includes the great Cheater!

Posted by marc_ash on April 8, 2008 at 2:07 p.m. (Suggest removal)

No big mike, they weren't trying to foul chalmers. If you look at the replay, he had numerous opportunities to foul. Almost 7 seconds ran off the clock before the shot went up. The telling sign that they weren't trying to foul was the defenders hands were in the air. You don't have your hands in the air when you are trying to foul.

Posted by BigMikeUT on April 8, 2008 at 2:37 p.m. (Suggest removal)

You're right...I had obviously seen the replay multiple times last night, but hadn't watched very closely to see if they were fouling or not. I had just remembered Collins falling to the ground and figured that they had fouled him after reading Calipari's comments this morning. But yeah, I just looked at the replay and they definitely were not trying to foul. Dumb coaching.

What happened overatedTigers did you get banned over at the memphis board..ha.. I do believe you did along with anybody posting trash this time around. They let you guys do it last time but seems they are stopping it this time. Anyway, there is only one true overated.....the VOLS..ha
It's funny. All those vol trash talkers have had to wait and wait..just waiting on the tigers to lose so they could go talk trash and i'm sure it was so frustrating because they would never lose. You guys came over there talking trash awhile back and then proceded to crash and burn. As a result you got a dose of your own medicine..trash talk. So.. you had to sit and take it and hope and hope we lost. I know it was a long long frustrating wait. We just rarely lose. Finally you got your chance so you come swarming back over. It's funny to us though that a team that did nothing... talk about choke.. choke in the sec tourney and choke in the big dance... would come and try to talk trash to a team in the national championship game.. ha.. pretty funny but not surprising for so many vol fans. Oh well, at lest your women's team did good this year.

Posted by overatedvols on April 8, 2008 at 5 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Well I see some more posters on the memphis site that says the championship game proved we were really not that good and never worthy of a top rating. Yea... that came from one of you idiot vol fans. We hear it all over there. They came out of the woods again. Or out of the cracks maybe I should say. We've got to use stronger roach spray over there.
Oh, also an ongoing comment is that UT is better because you won that game. Now come now.. in looking at Memphis anniliate so many teams in the tournament you guys knew you wouldn't want to run into us again. If you did you would have met us in the title game..ha ha..what happened?
Also if your reasoning is that tenn is better because you won the game then...how does it feel to know Arkansas is better than you?

Memphis choked...Calipari is a chump. Could he stutter and mumble anymore? I am glad he finally got to a Final 4 after being a head coach at the D-1 level for 16 years. The Final 4 from his Umass days was stripped from the NCAA records books due to NCAA violations.

Funny how Louisville, DePaul, Marquette, and Cincinnati ditch CUSA and and then Memphis all of "sudden" starts winning big and going to the NCAA tournament on a regular basis. Coincidence? I think not. Chumps.

Workin. those schools had nothing to do with us beating so many schools this year and making an incredible run thru the tourney...just ask texas, michigan st and ucla and might even mention it to miss. state also. Then there is georgetown..usc..on and on. You people need to accept it. We have the better basketball program and always have. You have a better football program. We don't argue about the football..we are smart enough to realize it..So, what's wrong with you people. People saying Tenn is better cause you have beat us two times are in denial. That is the equiavelent of the Tigers beating your football team for two years in row but yet your football team only loses 2 games all year and our football team loses many and then I say..well.our football team is better than yours. Well we aren't stupid enough to believe that. So, what's you guys problem?

One day maybe you guys can advance farther than the sweet 16 and then maybe people will say those Vols are pretty good but..right now nobody is saying it except for vol fans.

Just put basketball behind you and look forward to your football season. I think you'll actually have some sucess there. I hope you beat Alabama this year though. That one stung. I have many relatives from alabama and they think since i'm in Tenn that i'm a vol fan. They have no idea that memphis and vol fans hate each other. Sine we don't have anything in football I pretend to be a vol fan in football season just so I can have some wins. In basketball.....I don't need Tenn.
Anyway, at least you have the lady vols so you won't always have to be disappointed in Vol basketball. Oh.and one more thing....hee haw

Overrated: I've stayed out of the Memphis feud. Don't particularly have anything against Memphis State. That said, the game last night was perhaps one of the biggest chokes in the history of the NCAA. Good lord, man. You're guys needed the Heimlich Manuever applied by game's end.

I'm surprised overrated is able to type since I'm sure both his hands are still clasped firmly around his throat, much like CDR and Rose last night at the foul line. I think its rather funny that he comes on here to talk trash to a team that in the past two years has blown them out in Knoxville and beat them at their place against their "best team ever". Have fun replacing CDR, Rose, and that big thug Dorsey. We'll see you for your annual whooping next year. This time it'll be in Knoxville. Oh, and please stop pretending to be a Vol fan during football season, you give us true fans a bad name...

overated - My thought is that Memphis wanted to win two big games this season...
#1 - National Championship. Just like us, you didn't win it. Now you can quibble and say that we will never make it out of the sweet 16, but hell, at least we didn't blow a 9 point lead with 1:57 left. No one remembers the loser of the NC, only the winner.
#2 - Tennessee. It's a given that you MSU fans hate Tennessee more than we hate you, but at any rate, we own you in all sports, and I guess I can't blame you for hating us...

So to look back in retrospect, you won C-USA, we won the SEC, and neither of us won the national championship...but at least we took care of business in Memphis. I bet you would rather go 2-38 and win the national championship and beat UT, than go 38-2 and pull off one of the biggest choke jobs in college basketball history.

Posted by overatedvols on April 9, 2008 at 2:47 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Hey guys, at least your women took care of business and had some accomplishments. Maybe one year the mens team can get past the sweet 16. To the poster who said something about UT enjoying their SEC rings? Do they give rings to the teams that lose in the SEC. Wow, that's quite a conference.
I have two regrets about the season. The last two minutes of the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME that WE were in and for the Vols losing so quickly and being listed in the 'teams that bombed in the tournament' list. We wanted you again ..this time loser is out. If you will be truthful with yourself you'll admit if we had of played you in the last two weeks you would have been lucky to be within 25 points at the end of the game. It most likely would have made one of those lists like... worst vol beating in 30 years. We were in the championship game. Where were you? Ha.. i know.. you were watching us on tv. Your coach..ha.. he reminds me of one of those salesman at a car lot. You know.. the kind when you pull in you see this guy with a bright orange jacket walking toward your car waving. You quickly make sure all the doors are locked and get out of there as fast as you can to avoid this guy. You guys were concerned he might leave. Ha.. why...? He's not gonna leave there he's found a place where the people are stupid enough to believe him.
Tigers are the best team in the nation!!!

Tigers are the best team in the nation at choking i'd say.

Posted by itsme53792 on April 9, 2008 at 3:32 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Vol fans are really amusing; your weakly asserted air of superiority is transparently belied by your insecurity related to The University of Memphis. One post says that he gets a funk equal only to when ut plays Flordia in football. He's honest. The rest of your collection of redneck/illiterate, 8th grade rantings are really funny. You make so much of one win out of 40 games (ut played 38?)...as though that is better than advancing with and to the Elite levels? Priceless. When the 09/10 seasons starts, ut will still have the 2nd or 3rd best program in TN...unless they have to play Belmont.

Posted by itsme53792 on April 9, 2008 at 3:36 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Well I just read the Pearl article again. He recently referred to the 4 #1 seeds in the NCAAs as all having Hall of Fame coaches. He says that his players will be highly motivated because they will have the opportunity to play Memphis and Kansas this year. Sound like respect, doesn't it orangenecks? But he also notes that UT will in fact be playing Belmont. So, your range of program rating potential will also in fact be from 2nd to 4th.

Posted by itsme53792 on April 9, 2008 at 3:44 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Can't resist this one either. Vols85 (talking about his iq) reinforces the "hate" issue. The difference you orangenecks don't note...is that we don't care about you. The Memphis program is national while yours is Nasalville/Snottsville only. You generally recruit Memphis and Louisville rejects. Memphis recruits NBA caliber players because Memphis has an NBA coach...and plays in an NBA/U of M arena. UT and its fan base worked themselves into such a frenzy for the Memphis game that they totally deflated. You're just another regional game for Memphis. Arkansas/Ole Miss etc.

Posted by overatedvols on April 9, 2008 at 3:44 p.m. (Suggest removal)

The Memphis game is very very big to these people. It's their national championship since they can't really make it to one. This is as big as it gets for this program.

Posted by WorkinLikeHeck on April 9, 2008 at 4:06 p.m. (Suggest removal)

You don't care about us but you need us for the football welfare check we provide you. That's right if you don't need UT, than quit playing us in basketball and then you won't have that nice million dollar check waiting for you most years to keep your athletic department afloat. We really don't care about Memphis unless it's when you come on here to justify your basketball program after the choke job of the century because you can't really win anything that matters or beat us in anything. Maybe little brother will grow up one day and not need big brother UT for help.

BrownieVol nobody is disrespecting the lady Vols. Heck that's a great team, a dynasty. It's just the big arrogant vol trash talkers that try to act like the vols mens team is so much better than the memphis team. Now...that is ridiculous. You have fans of a team that has never been past the sweet 16 and crashed and burned at the end of the year talking about how bad the memphis team is. I don't get it do you? I only come here for a bit of revenge. Vol fans did tons of trash talking on our site awhile back and thats when overatedvol was born. Overatedvol goes away ..until more trash talk shows up on the Memphis site and then he returns. We've had the trash talkers lately so overatedvol lives. I had retired when you guys lost to louisville but too many coming over to the memphis board to talk trash so i've had to make a return.
Anyway, i'll gladly return to hibernation when the trash stuff ends over there. Until then, I have to say that the Memphis Tigers woke up the nation during the tournament. They now know what we knew all along...that they were an incrediblely awesome team. The nation agreed, the two best teams in the country played Monday night. (Too bad the griz are so bad though)

Thanks for coming out, now you can go back to tiger high and hope you get to play UT in football again so your athletic fund will double. I'm sorry you have a complex about not being able to beat tennessee in any sport. We like to call that the "little man syndrome".

GO VOLS
On to the next sport that we get to run a train on memphis...

Mark Ward = bandwagon fan and hypocrit. Actually stated he pulls for UT football to "get some wins in football". Then, he turns around and calls it's fans billies, bums, rednecks, whatever. Guess you're a 'billy too there, Mark. You really are a sad sack piece of crap.

Hey I never go the hillbilly route candycane. That just wouldn't show any class you know and i'd never want to come across as not having any class on here.

Well, as the college basketball season comes to a close (came to a close long ago for you guys) it's been a great year to be a Memphis Tiger fan. The best record in the nation and the best record ever in college basketball. A season that saw us fall just short of a national championship even though we clearly were the best team. I can only hope for you....vol fans .that one day your program can have this kind of success (wouldn't hold my breath) and that your team can gain the admiration of the nation as our team has done. Feel free to study the Tiger program in an attempt to better your program and try to bring it up to that level. It won't be easy but with a lot of hard work and determination (and a new coach) you can do it. Everybody needs to have goals and so you are fortunante to have the nations best basketball program as your neighbor. Good luck to you next season and let's hope you don't have a total collapse next year like the embarrasing one that occured this year. Hold your head high. The laughs and jokes about the late season collapse, the loss after becomming number 1, the humiliation in the SEC tournament and not but not least the poor showing in the NCAA tournament, will all be a thing of the past when the new seasson begins. Also on a final note, let's hope the entire SEC can step things up a notch next year. It became painfully evident that the teams were not on the level with the other better basketball conferences. Although the SEC's showing in the tournament was a complete embarrasment you can hope for something better next year. Just because the SEC was exposed this year doesn't mean it can't be at least decent next season. We can all hope that at least one team will get past the first 2 rounds so that the insults will stop.

Ok, i've tried to inspire you with an uplifting message. You see i'm not that bad after all. Hold your head up Vol basketball fans. Football season is only...well.. a half year away and at least you are good in that sport. As far as the basketball program, well nothing is so bad that it can't be made better.

overrated, congrats on a good season, even if your coach and team forgot that games go 40 minutes and not 38. And fear not, we will be head and shoulders better than you next year. You will be starting over while we are reloading. The whole SEC will be better next year and, who knows, CUSA might even get TWO teams in the Big Dance next year--with luck, one of them might be Memphis. That's my uplifting message to you. See you in Knoxville next season where we will beat you for the third straight year!

Vol girls, girls, girls. Since you can't get anywhere in the men's season ever, you girls can only cheer for your girls. One of you morons mentioned losing Dorsey, CDR and Rose? And mentioned thugs when the entire athletic dept at Snottsville has been arrested for serious stuff (felonies/possession/etc)? Memphis reloads every year. Remember Carnery and Shawne Willians (14 and 15 in the draft 2 years ago? Darrius Washington now in NBA?) Last uthug in the draft? Dale Ellis? Choking? How about getting to #1 and dropping off the earth? Well, Snottsville is barely on the earth with Dollywood and other such cultural specatacles.

38 and 40 are really relevant numbers. Memphis played 40 games and won 38. Glad to see such confidence in this little vol girl collection for the next game. Memphis will have a Top 5, and with Evans, the Top recruiting class. Any of you moronic girls watch the McD's classic? Rose all over again. Just be glad you've got one real program in Snottsville to be proud of: Pat Summit's..for all you vol girls.

Mark,

I'm gonna miss you putting your foot in your mouth. That's been fun to witness. Candycane... is that really the best you can do, Mark?

Just to further show off your ignorance, your team didn't have the best college basketball record ever. The 1976 IU Hoosiers went 32-0. 32-0 is better than 38-2. Sorry.

Can't wait for back-to-back-to-back wins against your choke-artists, ERRRRR, Tigers next year. Congrats on having your team join the dubious group of Chris Webber and the 93 Wolverines in crapping themselves when it mattered most. No one will ever forget that. Thanks for the entertainment.

Well, little people, lecture time commences once again...and it really isn't that much fun taking candy from intellectual babies. Let's see: It's more "humililating" to lose in OT in a national championship game...than to be run off the floor by a 6 seed, never have made the Elite 8? Hopson has committed; when was the last McD uthug recruit? To answer your question since your illiteracy pervades once again, Evans and Ebanks will be visiting Memphis this week. Why don't you go online at Rivals and see how many TOP 30 players are now committed? Score: Memphis 2, uthugs 0. Bet your little orange necks as to whether Evans signs with Memphis? Choking? There's never anything substantive in the uthug mouth to choke on...execpt your agitated jealousy of Memphis.

Amongst your many uthug morons, the brownsville volgirl has to be the most amusing. He says--in his own illiterate fashion--that the uthugs will be a "top team" next year. Little moron: Go online to Rivals and look at the already projected rankings for next year: Memphis at #3; the uthugs at #14. Now matter how you moronic cretins attempt to talk down to Memphis, the highest view you get is our shoelaces.

Don't get carried away with your place in this world. Jealousy of Memphis? Please. The U of M is irrelevant in this state outside of Shelby County. Always has been, always will be. Unless it's game week, Memphis isn't even a blip on UT's radar screen. (Nor are you a blip on our list of rivals either.) Unlike how your fan base does with UT, we do not spend every waking moment thinking about Memphis.

And, as I've had to remind your little friend overrated, our $80 million athletic budget (and all that it brings) allows us not to be jealous of anybody. We've had nationally ranked programs in football, men's and women's b-ball, track, baseball, softball, swimming, tennis etc. What has Memphis had??? Personally, I was kind of hoping that Memphis could win a national championship last Monday night and that incessant inferiority complex (that all Tiger fans have) would be soothed a bit. That would have allowed you to brag on something besides your Pom squad.

As far as the Griz, from what i'm hearing around town is that many of the coaches and players are saying that the reason they aren't good is because they just aren't healthy. Seems there is growing concern over the quality of healthcare the players on the Griz are receiving. Seems some have demanded a new team doctor claiming that the one they have couldn't treat a mosquito bite. They keep saying if they had a better team doctor that could keep them stay healthy there would have been double the number of wins. I understand Jerry West phoned in from Calif. and said he agreed with the accessment of bad healthcare for the players being the main problem. Now, I know brownievol has the inside scoop on things. Was just wondering if any of this is true?

I've heard that UT will honor the Memphis basketball team by installing a large flag with a blue tiger on it high above Neyland stadium this fall. Each home game as the national anthem is played 1/2 the players will salute the Tiger while the others place their hands over their hearts and turn toward the american flag. Midway thru the national anthem they will switch and the players saluting the american flag will turn toward the tiger flag and vice versa. Each time the vols win just before they play Rocky Top they will play the Tigers fight song with a large image of Calipari projected on the field at the 50 yard line with the caption.. "America's Team, most wins ever in a season". I thought it was a nice gesture. You guys aren't all bad afterall.

Overrated, shouldn't that read "Most wins over a bunch of humpties in one season"? Playing in Conference America is the ONLY thing that allowed Memphis to set that dubious record of most "wins" in one season.

America's team? I'm not sure Memphis is even Shelby County's team.

Tell us about your Pom squad. Now there are some true champions.

Amusing...once again...to check these mindless mutterings of the little people (brownsville, collier, etc). Facts are so inconvenient for little minds seeking to compete on higher levels. Your jealousy is evident by measuring your "vitriol" toward your superiors. As to "not important outside Shelby CO", let's talk about basketball in Davidson CO. The uthugs played OK ST in the Sommnet and filled half the seats last season. The Tigers played there this year and the Somment sold out. ESPN carried one of the 2 games played there: The Tigers' game. The uthugs were seen in person or in your small dreams. The most televised team in the US the past 3 years: The Tigers. Highest rated game ever played on ESPN: The Tigers. Recruit nationally: The Tigers. 3 consecutive appearances in the Elite 8 where the uthugs have never been: The Tigers. 3 Final Fours: The Tigers. 2 Championship games: The Tigers. All high level standing in basketball in TN belongs to The Tigers...except when the Volgirls are playing. They win. But you little Volgirls on these pages are the same losers that your uthugs are..and your little twitterings won't change the situation.

Volcane, Memphis is also "known" for lots of other things. That's why most sane people moved out years ago. (I'm just crazy enough to have stayed this close but I'm going to fix that little problem at some point.)

Itsme, several you need to understand so pretend I'm speaking S-L-O-W-L-Y so you can comprehend them.

1) If Memphis is so "dominant", how do you explain a little ole football school handing you your lunch on the court, mano-a-mano 12 out 19 times that you've lined up? Answer me that one, Mr. Education.

2) Evidently you haven't spent much time traveling the rest of the state so let me "educate" you. Outside of Shelby County, go to any place in the state you like and check the number of UT stickers and flags versus any school you care to name. That will tell you who controls this state. One basketball game in Nashville means squat. Heck, during football season, Rebels and Vols outnumber Tiger supporters in Shelby County. (Of course, there are plenty of Tiger basketball fans who turn into Vol football fans every fall so that shouldn't surprise anybody.)

3) You and the rest of the Tiger fans should count their blessings that UT will play you in any sport. The bottom line is that our budget isn't affected one way or the other if we play or don't play Memphis in anything. Personally, I'm for dropping every series with Memphis because we just have no need to do it. But Hamilton appears to want to keep it going so consider yourselves lucky.

If you need additional information, please don't hesitate to ask.

One week ago today the Univ. of Memphis Tigers came within a hair of winning the national championship (something the Vols will probably never ever do in our lifetime). Of course there's no doubt the Tigers wanted to win it all but still in looking back at what they did this season and in the tournament it was an incredible run. Their is no doubting that this team was a special bunch entertaining and aweing crowds with some of the greatest basketball talent that the college game has ever seen. The best season of any team in college basketball. A season that saw the most wins of any team in ncaa history. A season that saw Memphis defeat so many of the nations top teams on it's way to a 38 and 1 record. A season that saw a mid to late season slump at which time their only loss occured and in their only loss in 39 games it came down to the wire. The Tigers played their worst game of the season that night and still almost beat the number 2 team. That win turned out to be many things for both teams. For the Tigers it ended a number of streaks but it also removed the pressure that goes along with having the most wins in a row. In the end it was evident that this loss is what made the incredible run possible. On the other hand, although this game was the Vols signature win and the greatest in the history of that weak program, it proved too much for this group to handle and they crumbled after this win leaving them with only this one win as their significent acheivment for the year. Apparently the Tigers took too much out of this team and they were never the same. Many Vol fans want to boast of the win but apparently the loss benefited the Tigers much more than the win benefitted the Vols. In reality the win destroyed a weak minded team. It brought the nations eyes to their program where they promptly lost the next game and struggled in every game afterward with several humiliating losses that caused the vols to lose any respect they may have gained. Several national publications listed the Vols as the most disappointing team in the NCAA tournament this season.

Posted by overatedvols on April 14, 2008 at 11:48 a.m. (Suggest removal)

(part 2 of 3) The Tigers were generally thought of as the best team this season playing the quality of basketball not seen since the UNLV running rebs of the 90's or the Houston team of the 80's.
Along the way the tigers quietened the doubters by knocking off the sec, big 10 , big 12 and pac 10 conferences. Texas a team which many thought was capable of winning the national title was humiliated by the Tigers. Texas, a team that had humiliated the vols earlier in the season later claimed that they had just played an NBA team. Likewise Mich. St. had no answers and no idea what had just rolled over them. Finally came the showdown with mighty UCLA a team that most had picked to win the national title. Amazingly UCLA was made to look like a high school team playing against NBA veterans. Finally in the national title game Memphis showed it was the best team in the nation by going toe to toe with kansas and building a 9 point lead with as little as 1:58 to go It was only when their woeful free throw shooting failed them did they lose and even at that the game went into overtime. One more made free throw or one miss by Kansas and Memphis is the national champs. Still, there is no doubting who was the best team in college this year. Across the state there existed a team of pretenders. In Memphis the real deal existed. The pretenders (Vols) was a team that showed it had played beyond it's capabilites and finally their luck would run out as the season wound down. After being lucky enough to catch Memphis in their worst game the vols went on to choke time and time again. Losing their next game and never beating any team decisively no matter how bad that team was. Their elimination in the SEC tournament turned out to be the definition of a very disappointing season. As the nation slowly realized Tenn was never very good to begin with the Vols continued to embarrass. They barely escaped a nobody team in the opening round of the tournament and survived against a butler program that seems to have made it's reputation in beating Tenn. The vols looked horrific in their lose to a middle of the road Louisville team making the cardinals appear much better than they really were. Until the Vol program can beat teams like American and Butler without struggling this team will never be respected. The Vols need to pay attention to the team on the other side of the state to see how to handle success and possibly learn how to be a great team like Memphis. .

Posted by overatedvols on April 14, 2008 at 11:49 a.m. (Suggest removal)

(Part 3 of 3) Just in a simple comparrison it's easy to see how much better the Tigers were than the vols. Tenn. was destroyed by Texas. Memphis destroyed Texas. Tenn. was destroyed by Louisville. Lousiville was destroyed by North Carolina and Then North Carolina was destroyed by Kansas. Memphis went toe to toe with kansas and was the better team other than free throws.
During the tournament in talking to many Vols it was evident that they were glad they caught the tigers when they did. Many Vol fans stated if they were to play the Tiger team playing in the ncaa tournament they would have been humiliated beyond comprehension. Even die hard vol fans were in total awe of this Tiger team. The Vols have much to learn from Memphis the nations best team in 2007-2008. Whether that program will ever reach the heights of the Memphis program is the big question. Perfection is not easy to achieve and the Memphis team was about as close to it as possible while the Vols embraced letdowns, disappointments and embarrasement. It's clear the Vols have a long road ahead of them if they ever want to resemble the mighty Tigers

Just had a nightmare thought for the vols. It's not 100% that CDR and/or Rose is leaving for the NBA. There are some that say CDR may be back and even Rose may stay another year. There were 5 future NBA'ers on that team and if everybody comes back we would only lose Dorsey. We probably will have several of the top freshman in the country coming in next season. What if next april finds us back in the title game again? Sounds horrible to you guys huh? Sitting and watching us play in the national championship game....again... Also you know if we beat you next season then out of the last 4 games it will be 2 and 2. You will lose your bragging rights and we know that's all you have these days. I mean you guys have gone crazy with just a 2 to 1 edge that quite possibly could have been 2 to 1 in Memphis favor and now if we win next season it's 2 and 2. You'll lose what little trash talk material you have. You'll have to shut down your boards cause you won't be able to talk. We know how desperate you are to talk. When Memphis was soo much better this year you talked endlessly about your 4 point win that could have gone either way. Then, as bad as you wanted to talk, those darn Tigers just wouldn't lose. You had to wait weeks and weeks and then the best you could do was talk when they lost the 'national championship game' ... in overtime no less. What a pathetic bunch. Better hope you win next season. It will be really humiliating considering how we have dominated the college game lately. You'll no longer have your weapon.

mark ward we soundly beat both florida and south carolina after the memphis game. you are pathetic.it is you who better be hoping for a win next year so that you don't look quite so embarrasing to the nation since we have now won 12 out of 19 and you have lost 12 out of 19(36% win compared to our 63% win)and check your ncaa record books it is tennessee not memphis tied for the most points scored in a tourney game.facts are facts you did not win and never have won a national championship in bb.both schools are recruiting very well and it may be that we win one possibly before you.who knows only the future will tell.as for being the best team in bb this year, well you weren't kansas was so go and cry a little more and maybe one day you'll get over it.you are pathetic by living your life vicariously through the lives of a college basketball team.my advice to you is go meet some one and get a life because you desperately need one.

Hot off the wire:
Griz end another painful season at home on Sat. night. The evening was specified as "Fan appreciation night" The Griz organization showed how much they appreciate their fans by booby trapping one of the guard rails so that it would give way when autograph seeking fans leaned against it. 3 fans were injured and one was hospitalized. The team doctor was quickly brought into the arena where he promptly announced he does not treat fan falling from railing while seeking autograph injures.
Those Griz really appreciate their fans.

More and more amusing. No actually, downright funny. Volcanebrain...and Colliergirl suggest that the uthugs should not schedule Memphis. How quaint and uninformed: Bruce Pearl wants the game, Calipari neither wants nor needs it. Please check Pearl's quotes. They include Memphis as an Elite program. He also said that all 4 Final Four coaches this year were "Hall of Famers". Joe Biddle wrote a column within the past 3 weeks flatly slamming the uthugs as "not an elite program". Now Brownsvillemoronvol...is thrilled to have the record set for most points in a game. That and your win over Memphis still stand out as the high points for the program. Hopson? Memphis already has more Top 50 players signed that the utugs. Wait until WED: Evans and Ebanks are going to Memphis, with John Reik a 70:30 shot to go to Memphis. While you count your win over Memphis as your zenith (and you should), read these and weep: 21 NCAA bids; 12 Sweet 16s; 5 Elite 8s, 3 Final Fours; 2 Title games. Most wins (not points, morons) in a 3 year period and in one season. Naismith Coach of the Year. It really used to fun kicking your intellectual booties, but it just isn't any challenge these days. Go Volgirls!! The only basketball in snottxville.

Go Vols!! I've changed my hat now Cane. You won't see my criticizing the Vol football team. Just don't let them embarrass me with another loss to Bama this year. Also let's try and do something about those Gators. Gets old year after year. Cutcliffe is gone. Who's calling the plays? Looking at the schedule we could possibly end up 1 - 3 after the first 4 games. If so I might as well get my Tiger cap back out. I only see two easy ones on the schedule (no memphis game this year) San Jose and Wyoming. Definitely doesn't look like a schedule that will allow them to be playing for the national championship.
Liberty Bowl would always love to have them come and play the Conf. USA champ.

Basketball - Tigers best team in the land this past season. They will beat you next season just to end the trash talk that fans of a program that has not arrived yet are prone to do.
Just admit it Vol people, the Tigers are much better in basketball. I can always throw up the score of your Arkansas game too but that doesn't mean Ark is better. I know it eats at you but deep in your mind you know it's true and it is eatting you up. It's not healthy to be in denial like you are. I think it causes cancer. Eats brain cells away. Just find a quite spot in the house each evening and turn off everything and sit and meditate and say to yourself. Memphis is better in basketball.. I know it and it's ok. I will not let it eat at me any longer" Just keep repeating this 10 mins a day and by the start of next basketball season you will be able to deal with it without all the pain and denial. Just do it...your mind and body will thank you.

Yep BrownieVol you got me on the most points in a tournament game. Tenn scored more points in a tournament game than any other team...well they tied the record. I must admit that with all the Tiger accomplishments last season none of them can hold a candle to tying the most points in a tournament game. Now that i'm aware of this record i'd have to say that even if we won the national championship it just wouldn't be any good if we didn't at least tie the record for most points ever in a tournament game. Tigers are just going to have to get better. It's something to dream about anyway. I can see the headlines now: "Memphis Tigers in March of 2009 tied the record for most points in a tournament game" We can only dream.

this just in: tyreke evans chooses vllanova over mempiss stating that he would never attend a second rate institution(even after bob byrd and mark ward give him a BJ)like mempiss and he would rather go to tennessee but big brother wnts him to stay home.devin ebanks follows suit saying that after last season and previous season drubbing of mempiss by tennessee he could not bear the thought of having to play them, in this choosing west virginia saying he would rather go to a place where you can still kiss your sister because that is the exact same feeling you get playing for john calipari.

it is truly sad that you two are here instead of the CA,oh yeah maybe you guys got kicked off by the gate keepers.what a bunch of childish, sophmoric tiger fans.i wasn't holding on to any claim of fame by the record only stating that we have one and so do you "largest choke job in a national championship" now that's something to be remembered for.

our "high points" as you call them were winning the sec outright, beating memphis is just the norm as in "nothing strange there"(tenn12 mem7),and going to our third straight ncaa tournament.therewas atime back in the late 90's and early 00's that tennessee went to four straight.what was memphis doing back then?

Now Brownie, such vulgarity and obscenity. You can only dream that those players aren't coming here. It's your only hope that Tenn. would be the better team. Of course they are coming here. We are america's team. Pearl will be at the final 4 next year also... as a commentator ..again, talking about what it was like to be beaten so badly at home by Memphis and why he is always at the final 4 as a commentator while Calipari is busy coaching.

now markie you know its true and who's being vulgar?i went to the link i got off the CA i know you've seen it he is leaning, and that's being nice, toward villanova. even one of his entourage was seen wearing a villanova t-shirt during his visit to memphis ouch what a smack in the face.

he would fit in nicley at memphis i hear there is a little problem with him possibly being involved in a murder.

and don't forget markie only you guys know what it's like being beaten at home last time you were at our house you were...............well just beaten badly.

Difference in teams =
Both coaches are at the final 4 but one is actually still coaching.

Also Tenn. is the poster team for choke 2008. Become number 1 and...........
SEC tourney and.......
NCAA tourney and.......

Vols only wish they could make it to the championship game to choke. They'll never have to worry about choking there cause they will never make it that far. They can only choke in the sweet 16.
Tenn went to their 3rd straight tournament huh.. let's give em a standing ovation. Now, when do you think the next milestone will be... getting beyond the second round.......whew... choke choke..
Just get rid of Pearl and get Summit in there to teach the boys how to play.
Enough of the vol demoralizing comments for today. You guys already have a major inferiority complex from what happened this season.

wow didn't i just point out to you your mediocrity not just those four years but for a decade(that=10 years not so bright one)before you got the calipari the ncaa violator and his first five seasons were the same mediocrity you were used to now we have pearl who alone in his first three seasons has surpassed the great violator.we will be there it just takes time doesn't it.scotty hopson even said that one of his factors in choosing tenn was our tradition in all sports including bb and alot of players on the aau circuit were seriously looking at tennessee.

"Go Vols!! I've changed my hat now Cane."

You just showed how pathetic and fickle you are M-Ward.

once again i will have to state the obvious
memphis university:0 titles in any sport
university of tennessee:too many achievements to list as not to make memphis university jealous

Brownie, what am I going to do with you. I stay away from the redneck comments only to have you constantly go with the thug remarks.
At least the Tiger fans try to keep this civil and decent.
I heard rumors that Pat Summit was put out with the way the mens team collapsed this season. After the lady vols won the championship she emailed Bruce Almighty and the email only said:
That's how you do it boy. Any questions?

Insiders say she has met with the univ. president and she said "if he can't get the job done let me have em. I'll get us a national championship before Bruce can fondle a reporter"

Will be interesting to see what happens over that way. Keep me posted Brownie and CandyCane.

BrownieVol has written me a personal email that he sent this morning urging me to keep it just between he and I. I told him I would but it is so touching I felt I needed to share it with everyone:

Dear OveratedVol, I can't say these things on the public board because it would ruin my repuation however, I would like to tell you how I really feel about things. Yes, the Univ. of Memphis basketball team is awesome and yes I do think they are the greatest in the nation. I can't publicly admit these things because I am a vol fan and they would never forgive me for admitting things like this. I can say that I probably speak for all Vol fans when I say that yes, Memphis is better than the Vols and yes we were lucky to catch them at that part of the season when they were playing so badly. I'm not stupid enough to believe we could even come close to beating them if they played like they did in the tournament. One day hopefully we can have a program like yours where we can compete for a national championship. It's our dreams but we both know that we have a long long way to go. It was so disappointing the way they kept losing at the end of the season. I was embarrassed and I cried almost every day. I had to seek counseling and I still meet with my physciatrist 2 times a week to try and overcome my anger at the Vols. I really wish we had a coach like Calipari. i know he could take us to the next level. A level i'm afraid we may never reach with our current coach. It really hurts to admit that Memphis is better and has the better program. I'll never admit it on the boards and if you say anything about this i'll totally deny it. Congrats on that wonderful season you guys had. Maybe one day the Vols can be great like that.

Ok.. forgive me BrownieVol but I just had to make this public. It's really so well written and factual. Thanks.......buddy.

Ok Mark... you're 5 years old and even more immature than gatornation. Adios and congrats on being the biggest horse's a$$ on this board.

Well now....brownsvillevolgirl; what was that about Evans wearing a Nova shirt? Feeling pretty stupid now? You should. Your McD's AA is the first in 20 years? Ebanks will visit and sign with Memphis on May 11. Mark it down. So, 4 5-stars in place and 70:30 on Wesley Witherspoon which will make a total of 5 5-stars. Memphis fans hope the uthugs improve (get all their scholarships back after losing one to the NCAA APR measure--see Tennessean) and rise to the elite level. We'll be waiting on you. Our success is not dependent on your being 2nd tier.
