NASHVILLE - Meaty issues will be at "steak" in the NCAA championship game between Memphis and Kansas.
Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen and Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius are betting their states' prized proteins on the outcome of Monday night's game - Kansas City steaks versus pork ribs from Memphis' famous Rendevous restaurant.
Bredesen took a bite out of Kansas' hopes, saying, "A side of Jayhawk will be especially tasty with a nice Kansas steak, after the Memphis Tigers give us our first championship victory of the week."
Tennessee has two teams vying for national basketball championships. The Lady Volunteers face Stanford Tuesday night.
No word yet on a wager with California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

One thing to ponder.
If Memphis wins the National Championship this year, Vols will have beaten the #1 team in the country 4 out of the last 5 times they have played (3 of 4 against Florida the past two years and Memphis this season).

first it was davy crockett & the bottled water over the border dispute in georgia, and now the taxpayers are forced to buy rib dinners for the kansas governor?!

While Memphis cheers on it's team in the final you guys cheer on your womens team. Ha ha ha ha.
I told you we wanted a rematch. I said we'll win em all and meet you in the championship game and you will be there won't you?? I see you were nothing more than a whimper in the tournament. You guys taking notes on how to do it? Well, as long as you have that used car salesman coach you never will get any where so forget about the notes. You were so thrilled that he brought you out of the college basketball cellar that you didn't realize he's nothing more than a saleman. He's not taking you any higher than you were this year. Oh, and thanks for that loss awhile back. It definitely made us what we are. If we were undefeated there would have been too much pressure. Instead we were able to go into the tournament relaxed. We owe it all to you. Oh and sorry for screwing your season. After that game the two teams went in different directions.
Maybe one day Vol fans. Win or lose tonight we have been the best and most impressive team in the tournament. Looking back on all your comments about how we only had a good record due to our conf. You still think that way? Let's see.. we've taken down SEC, big 10, big 12, PAC 10. We also annihalated Texas and made them look silly. Does Texas bring back any memories?
Ok you guys sit back and make your sour grape comments. You can write about how bad we are while we are playing for the national championship tonight.

Hey overated,
How does it feel to know that Basketball season is about over, knowing that you have NOTHING to look forward to for quite awhile.
Tennessee, OTOH, has a decent baseball team and softball is always a national contender. Right after that we have football once again where we are nationally relevant, if not national contenders each year. Does Mempiss State still have a football team?
Have fun twiddling your thumbs until November so you can watch Calamari's thugs slap around some AAU team's fans.
Posted by BigOrangeHustler on April 7, 2008 at 4:37 p.m. (Suggest removal)
HotlantaVol, I think you're right; I don't think they have anything before next basketball season, unless of course some of the Memphis State basketball players are willing to organize some fights between them and they're baby mamas. Now that would be entertainment.
Posted by overatedvols on April 7, 2008 at 5 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Yes Hotlanta, I'd day that's true. We are a basketball school but at least WE have a great basketball team. Trust me, i'm not losing sleep over UT having a better softball team. We do have a football team. It's not very good. I think our biggest win was similiar to yours in basketball when we beat a team back about 10 years ago and screwed up their season and any hopes for a national championship. I believe that might have been Tenn.
Memphis being in the national championship must eat at your guys unbelievably. You thought your team was it this year and that very year we go all the way. Talk about rubbing salt in the wound.
I see Brucie is out in San Ant. ...watching us play. Of course he's grabbing for every microphone he can get and pointing out that Tenn. beat memphis not only this year but last year. Such a classless guy. At least he's not wearing a bright orange jacket around town and looking like a clown.
It is nice though to hear all the doubters so busy gushing over Memphis now and singing their praises and saying they may be one of the greatest teams ever. First non bcs school to make it to the title game in 18 years......wow...

I'm a UT grad and happy to be represented by Memphis in the Championship. I read and hear from too many fans like overated who is posting here. Its been my experience that he is the normal Memphis Fan, as I live outside Memphis. I believe True Tennessee Fans have a little more class and for the most part will be doing the same as I will be tonight - pulling for the tigers. Don't be as classless as overatedvols is.

GotPearl - I didn't count the games in the year when they didn't win a National Championship.
Florida 2006 Swept em 2 times
Florida 2007 Beat them 1 out of 2
Memphis 2008 1 time assuming they win it all.
4 out of 5 times.

pivomaker and tractoronthepole,
I applaud your positive approach. Deep down, I think it would be nice for Memphis to win to give a lot of the hard working, honest, decent people here something to be happy about. I just get upset thinking about it sometimes, because I know there are some fans that I have to deal with that will make it hard to take. Whoever wins, I will be glad when it is over at 11pm CT tonight.

Do you guys think the there will be a First 48 episode about somebody getting killed watching the game? By the way, Rendezvous ribs SUCK! It's also in one of the worst parts of town. Memphis is a stain on a great state. They raise the crime rate and lower the average income for the entire state every year. Too bad Thug University only plays in the "Fabulous" Conference USA. I wish we could beat their brains out every year on the football field. Vols fans outnumber Memphis fans every time they play.

I swear that if they win, there will be looting and riots. Colliervol and Fathervol, secure your possessions. If Memphis loses, whats the over under on how many people will lose their houses/cars because they bet them away thinking Memphis was a lock?
Sen Cohen was just on the local CBS affiliate saying that twice before the Refs screwed Memphis and that as long as they did not try to cheat the Tigers again, Memphis would win....geez...great job senator

allvol,
What kind of classless idiots are not pulling for the team from Memphis, by God, Tennessee?
Answer: The sort of classless idiot who moved to Memphis from East Tennessee 20+ years ago and has to put up with certain Memphians once the game is over. Having said that, there are many of their decent, blue collar fans that I wouldn't mind seeing Memphis win for. It would give them something to be happy about in a town where happiness is often lacking. But my opinion regarding certain others who constantly belittle the state of Tennessee, trumps. I have to be for Kansas.

It's a free country, Steve. Thanks for the note. I am very grateful to be from Chattanooga, Tennessee, but I have come to appreciate what Memphis and the Delta culture are, and I am very glad that they are both a part of our incredibly diverse state. Come on, guys, we know that there are great Florida fans, Auburn fans, and even Georgia Bulldog fans--and classless fans from each as well--our Vols included. Memphis has been very good to me; I like the town; and I am very much for the Tigers.
Peace . . . .

Allvol, I'm one of those classless idiots that downs Memphis. St. Jude is one of the only good things about Memphis, and I do support them financially, but Memphis is Thugland. PERIOD. I dare you to park your car in the middle of Orange Mound and not be afraid. All that Beale Street is a big drunk party. I am from West Tennessee, hence my screename-DBURG- Dyersburg, but seriously, get on a Michigan website and see if anybody is talking about how great Detroit is. I AM A TENNESSEE fan ALWAYS, and I believe that the city of Memphis is a dark stain on the state of Tennessee. All of Memphis, excluding Cordova, Germantown, etc, other outlying suburbs. But seriously, you try and go to Orange Mound and play a football against Melrose like I did and see if you dont like Memphis.

Mark,
Well, career-wise, Memphis has been good to me, too. I see now that I read your second post that Memphis has been very good to you, also. I have mixed emotions about this game. I grew up near Chattanooga myself, and would very much like to be back there some day. When you grew up somewhere where you could walk out the back door and be hiking in the mountains, I don't think you can ever get used to the Delta completely.
Peace to you also,
Steve

Thanks to all the Memphis/Tiger fans. We are a great city and we have a great team. I only come here out of memory for the hundreds of vols that came to our site when Tenn won the tenn/memphis game. It was totally ridiculous..so.. i come over here to do the same occassionally.
As far as the one saying you look forward to beating us every year. Let me tell you.. if we lose that game and can end up in the national championship.. we'll gladly give it to you every time. I think you'd take the same deal.

Thanks, Steve. I am just loathe to deny anyone the right to be called a Tennesseean. I'm dead serious. West Tennesse ain't Middle Tennessee and Middle Tennesse ain't East Tennessee, but It's ALL Tennessee. I guess I am just a big sap who hates to see folks from the Volunteer State not supportin' each other. I would hope that Memphians would pull for us (and, God, I hope someday they do!), but I know some would do just what some of us are doing. I don't get the point. Guess I'll go watch the game.
Go Vols . . . .

I'm just glad Memphis fans have something to do tonight besides a drive-by shooting, quickie-mart holdup, drug deal, or impregnating a 16 yr. old. Thank You UM for allowing a few meager hours of relief from the prison costs, medical costs, drug enforcement costs, and welfare/foodstamp costs that the rest of TN must shell out.
Hopefully a win will not cause a rash of these occurrences, thus offsetting any potential net gain.

Hey overated,
The fact that you had to write a book expressing your feelings on a VOL website two months after TN beat you guys in your best season ever at your own house lets me know that the loss to TN did eat at you this whole time. Oh my god, made a post on this site while the NC game was going on...that's pathetic. Try not to embarrass the city of memphis more than the city does on its own on a daily basis.

I AGREE COMPLETELY. I will never deny ANY Memphian who is proud to be a Tennessean and loves Tennessee the right to be called a Tennessean. In fact, it hurts me to see some of the things posted by people who probably have never been to Memphis and don't realize that 95%+ of the people here are decent, hard working, honest, religious people -- many of whom are just struggling to get by. The frustrating thing for me is that so many Memphians, especially among the establishment, don't seem to consider themselves Tennesseans. They consider themselves Memphians only. That's why I was highly annoyed when the Memphis coach said: "We should secede and form our own State. The State of Memphis." If not for the attitudes of about twenty prominent Memphians (utchris2003 named one of them), I could pull for the Tigers tonight.

Memphis Misses 3 of 4 free throws allowing Kansas to escape into OVERTIME. I would have been all for Memphis just because they are a Tennessee school and it would have been nice to say Tennessee was the only team to whip the National Champs BUT the jerk from Memphis who kept polluting these boards took all the fun out of being for Memphis. Twist oh so slowly in the wind!
