A Roanoke, Va., man who has been coming to University of Tennessee football games since 1948 and has been a season ticket holder since 1970, received an award Saturday from other members of an email list he is on.
Clyde Clark, 86, received a plaque honoring him for his contributions over several years to the UTSPORTS list, which is administered by the Knoxville News Sentinel.
The award presentation was a surprise to Clark, the unofficial UT historian on the list. He is the only person to have ever received a plaque from the list members. List members from Texas, Florida, Indiana, Kentucky Virginia and Tennessee attended a lunch in his honor at Calhoun's at Volunteer Landing.
The University of Tennessee is Clark's "adopted" university. He started following the Volunteers while growing up in St. Charles, a coal-mining area in southwest Virginia's Lee County.
Clark delivered the News Sentinel while he was growing up in St. Charles and began collecting newspapers clipping and other Tennessee memorabilia. His collection today is extensive.
A military veteran and longtime Eastern Airlines worker, he lived in Charlotte and Miami before retiring to Roanoke.
The UTSPORTS list was started in the mid-1990s by Mike Shelton, who was at Duke University at the time. The administration of the list was later taken over by The Knoxville News Sentinel.
It has 300 members and is a heavy volume email list often with up to 100 messages a day. To subscribe, send a note to listserv@lists.scripps.com. In the body, put subscribe UTSPORTS your name.
You may leave the list by sending an email to listserv@lists.scripps.com and putting signoff UTSPORTS in the body.
