Attorneys for Robert Ayers and Jerod Mayo, both redshirted freshmen, agreed to the date Monday during a preliminary hearing in Knox County General Sessions Court. Neither player was present.
Ayers and Mayo face felony aggravated assault charges stemming from an altercation at the University Center during a fraternity party.
Ayers, a defensive end, told police he struck student Shadiyah Murphy and has been suspended from the team, police said.
Mayo, a linebacker, said he was misidentified and did not hit anyone.
A resolution could be reached prior to a trial.
"I think the case can be resolved on Aug. 1,'' said Wade Davies, attorney for Ayers. "Other than that, I don't want to make any formal statement.''
Jeff Hagood, Mayo's attorney, doesn't expect his client to go on trial.
"My belief,'' Hagood said, "is that the matter will be resolved in a way that is fair to Jerod Mayo and consistent with the position he has always maintained.''
Haralson on Watch: Senior Parys Haralson is on the 24-man preseason watch list for the Ted Hendricks Award, given to the nation's top collegiate defensive end.
David Pollack of Georgia won it the past two years.
Other names on the watch list include Quintin Moses of Georgia, Kirston Pittman of LSU and Wallace Gilberry of Alabama.
