UT Notebook: December 2

Brooks Brawl: UT head coach Phillip Fulmer said no players would be suspended for Saturday’s SEC Championship game versus Auburn as a result of an altercation early Wednesday morning at a Knoxville nightclub. UT backup linebacker Daniel Brooks was named in the police report.

"I don’t think I can get everything in place by Saturday," Fulmer said. "There are no charges filed. I’m investigating it. I have a reasonable account of what happened and I’ll deal with it appropriately.

"I didn’t have a curfew set. I’d rather them be in but there wasn’t a curfew."

Injury Report: Fulmer said he didn’t believe freshman cornerback Brent Schaeffer will be able to play Saturday. Schaeffer suffered a broken collarbone against South Carolina on Oct. 30. He returned to practice this week.

Fractures of Schaeffer’s type take six weeks or more to heal. Saturday will mark the fifth week since the injury. With rehabilitation such as bone stimulation and calcium supplements, the recovery time can be reduced by three or four days. Reducing the recovery time by a week is rare.

Schaeffer was on UT’s tentative travel roster but Fulmer said he will not be on the final version meaning he will not make the trip. The SEC limits each school’s travel squad to 70 players.

Three Vols will play Saturday without any significant practice time this week. Cornerback Roshaun Fellows (foot sprain), offensive guard Cody Douglas (foot sprain), and Justin Harrell (ankle sprain) have received medical clearance but did not practice this week.

"Not practicing and playing isn’t always the best of deals," Fulmer said. "At least, they’re going to be there and help.

"The corner position is much more a skill type position. You got it and you practice it to try to stay in tune. The offensive line is such a physical position that an ankle or foot injury is not the best thing to be dealing with. The mindset that they have to be there and try to help our football team is exactly what you’re looking for."

MIA: Jonathan Wade missed Thursday’s practice with an illness. With Fellows missing practice, UT’s top three cornerbacks Thursday were freshmen Jonathan Hefney, Inky Johnson, and Antonio Gaines.

Motivation: Fulmer didn’t want to specify who will start at strong safety. When pressed on the issue, he relented.

"They’ll all play," Fulmer said. "Corey Campbell will start. We’re trying to make sure they keep their intensity up."

Review: Fulmer said he supports instant replay for officials in the SEC.

"Everybody is human," Fulmer said. "You’re going to make mistakes. If you make a mistake that influences a football game with coaches's futures and teams' opportunities, then certainly they should be willing to take a look. Apparently, it’s worked pretty well with the Big Ten."

Fulmer said he would prefer the Big Ten’s version of instant replay instead of the NFL’s.

Big Toe: Fulmer said he is pleased with junior Albert Toeaina’s performance. Toeaina was forced into the starting lineup because of senior Michael Munoz’s shoulder injury.

Munoz will not play Saturday. Sophomore Arron Sears will start at Munoz’s usual left tackle spot. Toeaina will start at right tackle. Toeaina, a much ballyhooed junior college star, was expected to start the season before Sears’s emergence in pre-season practice.

"Albert is a work in progress," Fulmer said. "He’s done pretty well for no more experience than he’s had at this level. He’s been very willing to take coaching and work at it."

Ready: "I kind of feel the anticipation from our football team as we get closer to the game," Fulmer said. "It’s a good feeling. We’ve prepared well."
