Pitcher Cat Hosfield of Murfreesboro Riverdale High School was chosen as the National High School Coaches Association High School Senior Athlete of the Year and Jessica Spigner of Valencia High on Santa Clarita, Calif., received the Gatorade Player of the Year for softball in the state of California.

The Tennessee softball team finished with a 50-win season and the No. 9 RPI in the nation after losing six starters from last year’s SEC championship team. The Lady Vols were in a rebuilding mode to be sure, having lost NCAA strikeout queen and U.S. Olympic team pitcher Monica Abbott among the departed players. UT (47-14), which was seeded 13th nationally, will play Big South tournament champion Winthrop (36-17) at Lee Softball Stadium on Friday.
